Can't update to 12.1.7

This is the error message: "You cannot install Office 2008 12.1.7 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume."

I did everything I was told to at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968694, which is the official description of the prerequisites for installing the update. MacOS is 10.5.7. Latest Mac Office is 12.1.5.

I guess I will have to use AppZapper to remove Entourage but I'm worried it will remove all of Office and I'm not at home to re-install from a CD.

sad I’m pissed off

The most likely causes for not being able to install an update are as follows:

    1. You have moved the Office 2008 folder to another location. It must stay in the Applications folder. If you moved it, and didn't do anything else, you can simply move it back to Applications and try the updater again.

    2. You have manually deleted something in the Office 2008 folder. If you did this, then you must uninstall and reinstall Office 2008. When you reinstall Office, you should do a custom installation so that you don't install the pieces that you don't use.

    3. You ran an application like Xslimmer or Monolingual to remove architectures or languages. If you did this, then you must uninstall and reinstall Office 2008. You should never use Xslimmer or Monolingual on Office 2008.

If you are using the Entourage for Exchange Web Services public beta, you cannot update Office 2008 to 12.1.7. You should either uninstall the public beta of Entourage for EWS so that you can update to 12.1.7, or you should wait until the final release of Entourage for EWS and then run the updates.

If none of these is the case, then you should call tech support. You get two free calls to tech support with your legal purchase of any edition of Office 2008. To find out the correct telephone number for your area, go to http://support.microsoft.com/

Having unwittingly run Monolingual with no idea that this would break future Office updates, i am now stuck with Nadyne's solution no.3; uninstall; reinstall; run a series of incremental updates, because Microsoft don't do combo updates; all the time keeping my fingers crossed that nothing was deleted that shouldn't have been. Half a day's work, totally unproductive. I appreciate that the 'standard' update insists on looking for all language files, but as so many Mac users are in my situation, wouldn't it make sense for Microsoft to offer a version of the update for such users? I don't know any other software that won't update because language files were removed; is every other manufacturer wrong? Meanwhile I will simply put up with using 12.1.5 and hope there are no security problems... :(

Both 12.1.7 and 12.1.9 (which was released this week) are combo updates. We don't do combo updates on every release because it doesn't always make sense. For example, 12.1.4 wasn't a combo update because it only contained a fix for an Entourage issue that was introduced in 12.1.3, and it was released less than 2 weeks after 12.1.3, so there wasn't a great reason to make everyone re-download stuff they'd just installed a few days ago. 12.1.9 does require 12.1.0 (that is, Service Pack 1), so you might have to do two updates if you purchased Office before that SP was released.

If you'd like full details about how running a third-party application like Xslimmer or Monolingual impacts our update process, check out the following blog post by one of our senior developers:

Thanks for the information as to the combo updates, but the root problem remains. The useful reference you gave describes this as a common problem, which is I am sure correct. This would have helped if I had not already run Monolingual, (not just to save a few kb in Office but to save over a Gb overall) in my ignorance. The suggested solution now is that I have to delete Office and reinstall, and I have to ask: why is that so? No other software manufacturer has this proprietorial attitude towards language files; nobody but MBU flatly refuses to update if they have been removed. At this stage I have to balance hours of time deleting and reinstalling against the unknown security risks of leaving Office as 12.1.5. For the moment, I’ll take the risk; but as a paying customer of Microsoft I would rather be able to update in the traditional easy way, as I can with all other software. Surely MBU could come up with a patch to allow updating if language files are deleted, rather than expect customers to risk the very dodgy-looking hacks in the updater executables suggested at numerous websites? In the long run, this is just another small reason to stop buying Microsoft Office...

    The reasons are twofold:

    1. We don't know exactly what was deleted. We could find it, by checking every single thing that's installed as part of a Office and determine whether it's okay to go forward. This would impact the size of the update, as well as the time necessary to update.

    2. The number of users who run applications like Xslimmer or Monolingual are very small. We have millions of users, and the vast majority of them have never heard of such an application, nor see a need for it. Most people aren't so strapped for hard-drive space that a single GB makes a difference. We're a small team with limited resources, and we have to decide what to budget our resources on.

In this case, when it's an issue that impacts a tiny percentage of users and has an easy (albeit time-consuming) fix, we have things that are much higher priority and that will have a positive impact on a much greater number of users.
