I upgraded windows live messenger, afterwards I could not log in, I uninstalled messenger properly, but now when I try to install messenger, live installer says I already have messenger, but I dont. I have tried deleting files manually, but can't seem to find them all.
I have also tried running the clean manager, removing all suggestions from another windows help link for error code 1603

Inappropriate?Have you tried running the latest version of Windows Live Messenger installer from the Windows Live essentials installer at http://download.live.com/?
You may also want to visit the Windows Live Solution Center for support for Windows Live services as noted in this post and available directly here. -
Yes, many times... and to be honest I've spent hours and hours reading forums and googling problems since Dec 17 when I decided to try Vista Ultimate, after another hour and half of reading it's still broke.
Live installer couldn't install messenger because it's already installed... so I go to unistall programs select messenger and unistall... yay messenger has been successfully removed, mmmkay try to install wlsetup.exe (both custom and web) from the link provided, and I get to choose the programs I would like to install, but there aren't any, under "you already havethese programs" top of the list is Messenger. I've tried rebooting between unistalling/reinstalling I wish there was a way of manually installing messenger so it would fix whatever I have done.
The best part of this is when it does work I probably won't be able to sign in, which is what started all this when I updated messenger.
Thanks for getting back to me so quick/at all, I would not want to have your job... -
Inappropriate?i have exactly same problem on xp.
after upgrading to the latest version, ( 14.0.8064.0206 i think), i kept first getting errors while signing in, to do with file names too similar or unclear, and dns cache,
followed advice, none worked, someone too advised to renew password at live online. this was bad, as when i tried to log in, the new sign in assistant would let me change back from auto sign, to manual, so had to uninstal again... so i did so, seemingly rightly...
so got the installer, but it would only give me options for photo gallery, writer, and toolbar, and it seemed to think i already had it instaled!!
this is just ridiculous. maybe time to switch to somethig with a much smoother system like skype, google, xchat, chatzilla ANYTHING but this
also, what is it with that dam pop-up after you log in? the live rubbish pop-up? i mean, who uses that? its spam, and to an extent its also malware as it slows down my other tasks and also causes cursor to skip into contact search, so words end up in contact seach instead of in chat.....
a very klunky peice of work
none of the advice works, this is SO common that it cannot be a user fault. -
Inappropriate?M3 sweat said "You may also want to visit the Windows Live Solution Center for support for Windows Live services as noted in this post and available directly here. "
howver these live helps are generally very teddy bears and hug stuff, i have NEVER found any helpful technical advice in them,
its so infuriating, especially with microsft acting ( actually similar in its arogance to US foreign policy) like the one true god -
Inappropriate?I appreciate the feedback on our forums which I'll pass back to the Support team. However, I think that there is plenty of support for Windows Live customers at http://windowslivehelp.com/. If you post a note with the details on our forum, we can ask the support and product group reps there to take a look.

Inappropriate?Paul for what it's worth, after the last batch of updates I installed/de-installed messenger another 20 times and it fixed itself... yay! I guess.
If you ever get your messessenger to work you can disable the pop-up in "options"

Inappropriate? If you've tried Vista this will brighten your day; http://blip.tv/file/340692
Klunky? have you tried Office 2007? wow! it's not like I was taught how to use Office in the mid 90's at college, then used it regularly for the last 15 years, just so they could change damn near all the controls so even simple tasks take me forever now, not to mention the enormous headache the new layout gives me on my 24" screen... oh wait that's exactly how it is...
M3 Sweatt, thanks for trying... I would be more than happy to elaborate on any of my Vista experiences, just drop me a line. As for XP, it was great, still use it for work and as a backup. I consider switching my main PC back almost daily when my screen gets dots and then my display driver crashes. Hopefully Ati will have that figured out pretty soon.
M3 Sweatt is there a trick to get full screen on one monitor and then still be able to use the other? for example I have a 24" LCD and an old 21" crt as my secondary. If I run Media Center on the 21" in full screen I can't get the mouse pointer back to the 24" side to do any work, brilliant! -
Inappropriate?thanx for the info, i appreciate the gestures guys, though tbh i dont seem to find answers to most tech problems on microsoft help sights and stuff
i've optede for now for the trillian thing, which means i get to use my msn, yahoo, and AIM, it looks like crud, but it works a real treat,
happy tech-heading guys
and i'll try with the above "livehelp" link, i might as well, that'll give me something to winge about at dinner tonight no doudt, ha -
Inappropriate?well, the live help was kinda what i expected, mainly how do i write emails kinda things, and hacky stuff
but lef ta message probably in the wrong forum as there was NO WAY ro navigate to the "right" forum, not only that but the question search no matter what i wrote in it, and diliberatly tested it too by writing mickey mouse on last try, came up with EXACTLY THE SAME PAGE OF non relevant answer in same order (yes you gussed it, the SAME PAGE) EACH TIME wooops caps,
so it was even worse than expected, as was the new messenger...
at wits end, i might not bother.... -
Inappropriate?i couldnt use the westrax, or whatever it was called clean-up thing as i am not the administrator on this set up, and wont be able to do anything that way till friend gets back..
however, couldnt you simply have told me to go into programme files and delete the remaing bits and peices? when i discovered thats how simple it was i was very angry with the given dumbed down advice
I’m REALLY ANNOYED
-
Inappropriate?AND
its still useless, it when finally re-installed after first log out, i couldnt help but notice it hadnt installed any icons to start it up again...
I’m stunned
-
Inappropriate?neither on desktop nor start menu, and as i had exited, neither could i do it thru task bar,
-
Inappropriate?Deleting the bits only made my problem worse, as I could not find some random bit that made it think it was still installed
-
Inappropriate?actually, its fine.. to delete those files, THEY are the reason that its not installing it seems.
and now know that i can make shortcuts from the stuff in programme files, wich is upsetting as i see much to do about that on forums..
msn ,essenger is now running fine,
deleteing those files left over ,manually, worked, full stop..
the fact that i deleted those LEFT OVER files, means that when i re-installed after, it was all clear for the installer to do its job... how much more simple can that be..
now the only problem now is messenger, wich though rrunning fine, keeps spamming me through my contacts chat windows...
I’m a little less toilet-watered off, but messenger spam now
-
its all happening all over, am unable to sign in, cant resolve names on host thingy. i think the error code is 81000306,
have followed all instructions, and it seemed to think the connectability was resolved, however, it still seem quite unable to connect unless i go the http://webmessenger.msn.com/default.a... link, -
Inappropriate?now today, 24hrs after this problem reared its head again, i am now getting error 80191002, meaing it seem that my contacts are not available, followed given online advice and as yet its done nothing to resolve this issue.. just cant get this latest version of msn to do its job proper;y at all
I’m GRRRRRRR
-
Inappropriate?well well well, wadaya kno, after only a week i am getting 81000306 again, in fact i now klnowe this error by heart, and get no reply here on in so called help centre. non of the advice helps, THAT NONE OF IT, and seem to be getting very ignored
I’m absolutly pist
-
Inappropriate?that shud have read "and have had no reply since this happned last week, on here or on messenger help centre"
-
Inappropriate?oh and i am using windows XP pro, 2002 service pack 3,
and the version of messenger is the one that i began tio see released around feruary, the latest one -
Inappropriate?I had the same problem and FINALLY I found simple way to solve the problem:
Install a program called EasyCleaner: http://personal.inet.fi/business/toni...
Select add/remove in the program and then you can finally delete messenger and clean Windows registry.
Now you should be able to install msn again. -
how the hell is the average member of public meant to use this toni thing? i find it a bit numbing myself -
Inappropriate?dosnt work.
all that happens is one week later HERE YOU ARE AGAIN>
its NOT my fault it seems to be MY HOSTS FAULT what are they doing about it? NOTHING so here i am AGAIN
not only that troble shooter as usual dosnt even get round to the repair that it CANT DO.
i know how to get rid of the crap that a programme I SHOULDNT HAVE TO BE UNINSTALING IN THE FIRST PLACE, is uninstaled, i know what top delete, it is SIMPLE TO TELL FOLK HOW TO DO THIS< we really DONT NEED A PRGRAMME TO DO IT FOR US< we can learn things you know.l
this is bloody ridiculous, so its AT :LEAST ONCE A WEEK NOW HOSTS FILE (cant resolve names), and KEY PORTS it THINKS its firewalled in, its NOT, and it thinks its cleaning hosts file, ITS NOT.
also these file cleaning things, they aint any use to most people! most people dont know what things like administrator means and they THEY can be one! it just makes them feel LESS IN CONTROL OF THEIR OWN COMPUTUER, and there for less in power.
what can i add here, nothing that hasnt been said technically before..
so here i go uninstaling, cleaning out the trASH, AND RE-INSTALING, ALL SO IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN NEXT WEEK...
I’m sick of it
-
Inappropriate?now its gone back to thinking its installed when it isnt NOT ONLY THAT but there is nothing in there to make it think so, i have both automatically AND manually checked this
-
Inappropriate?and the help centre is DREADFUL as is the live help with the RUBBISH call centres in india
-
Inappropriate?Hi Mike,
Sorry to hear that you are having trouble in installing Windows Live Messenger. I am working in Messenger Support Group and I will work with you to resolve this issue.
Could you please send me the log file from your installer, so that we can determine what exactly is the root cause of this failure ?
Here is how you could get the logs and send it to us :
1. Visit http://download.live.com
2. Click on the download button and *save* the installation file onto the desktop(do not run the installer yet)
3. The default file name will be “wlsetup-web.exe”
4. Open Command prompt, type the following command :
CD desktop
wlsetup-web.exe -verbose ( this will help us to see verbose log output from installer)
7. Once install is complete ( in your case, after it fails), go to the following location
CD C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\WLSetup\CabLogs
and send us the latest CabLog file.
Please email the Cablog file to messengersupport@live.com. I will get back to you once we have analyzed the installer logs.
Thanks,
Chitra -
Inappropriate?WHY CANY YOU JUST TELL PEOPLE TO USE THIS if u cant instal especially the
http://www.freemessengerstuff.org.uk/...
download it, and run it, and it does all this for ytou, SIMPLE, honestly guys, i feel the sincerity, but i havnt really had any help that works on this issue, and never found much useful help for MS stuff...
the ZapMessenger solved this problem in seconds, tho i realised NOT to instal latest msn messenger again, TOO buggy, it had to be re-installed every week, and more often than not wouldnt re0instal at all,
so am now using the previous version
why cant MS do a type of ZapMessenger? so simple
I’m bewildered
-
Inappropriate?wopps, that was meant to say, "if you cant instal, especially the latest version of messenger......"
