When i go to Microsoft update and it downloads all the updates finr no problem, but the updates will not install. it says "The updates failed to install because there is something on your computer that is not allowing the updates to be install". but it doesn't tell me what is stopping it. and I couldn't find a thing on the Microsoft support pages even close to this. can anybody offer me any help with this?

Inappropriate?Do you know which updates are attempting to install? It could be trying to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) update - I saw this same error message when I attempted to update my PC.
I suggest that you look at the options on the Windows XP SP3 Support Page to obtain free installation and compatibility support for SP3. There you'll find options for E-mail Support, Chat Support and live Phone Support.
Also see the Windows Update Troubleshooter and How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation issues.
Hope this helps. -
Is it absolutely necessary to install this update (XP Service Pack 3)? I can't load it on my computer either and I can't delete the update icon. I get nervous downloading off the internet. -
I don't know what the updates are most of them are security updates and hot fixes and driver updates. there are 129 updates that downloaded but something is stopping them from being installed on my computer and i have no idea what. i have never had this problem before the last time i got updates everything went like its supposed to download and install -
Inappropriate?I am not positive, but I think that Microsoft requires ActiveX controls in order to download and install updates. Firefox does not support ActiveX controls. One workaround that I found helpful is to install the IE Tab add-in, which allows that tab to replicate an IE browser. Go to WIndows Update from that tab.

I use IE7 when I go to Microsoft to get the updates. I'm not having any trouble downloading the updates there is something stopping them from being installed -
Inappropriate?Installing SP3 is recommended, and is generally easy to install on an SP2 system via Windows Update and Windows Automatic Update. I suggest that back up important files, and consider creating a Windows XP Restore Point.
And see http://support.microsoft.com/default.... for more details on the steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3. -
I can't add service pack 3 to my computer. when i do it locks down my computer it has something to do with my processor being changed from Intel to AMD by the computer company I removed the drivers and installed service pack 3 it didn't lock it down but then the updates started adding vista programs on my computer. Microsoft told me to remove service pack 3. that I really didn't need it anyway its not much different than service pack 2 and it slows your computer down.... The windows update tries to install it every time i just click no do not install. -
Inappropriate?I suggest that you contact our free tech support page that lists your options for obtaining support on SP3 installation, as noted at the top of this discussion: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...

I have been to my computers web support site I have chatted with them talked to them on the phone the went step by step on how to uninstall the intel drivers and they took me to microsoft to download something and a driver then we loded SP3 and my computer kept restarting over and over so we went into safe mode and removed it, thats when compaq support called Microsoft and we went throught a few steps and reloaded SP3 and when my computer restarted it crashed. so microsoft did a remote access into my computer and they got it loaded and my computer restarted fine but when it got updates it added Vista updates only causing my computer to crash again so they said lets just remove it and leave it off. and he said that service pack 3 wasn't much diffrent than service pack 2 I don't really need it and it slows the operating system down, and microsoft wasn't going to do anything about it because Vista has already been relesed and they want people to update to vista. so he removed it and all the stuff he added and the vista updates that were installed on my computer. then he ran a update just to make sure it wasn't going to add Vista updates and it only added xp updates. this was about three weeks ago then about a week and half it started doing this not installing the updates it downloads them but won't install them i get a pop-up saying the updates were not installed do to the settings on your computer, but everything is set to auto updates download and install automatically. so dose this make it any clearer? also when it tells me the updates weren't installed it gives me around ten links and they all talk about the blue screen error. and I have no idea what its talking about blue screen error? but nothing addresses my problem I'm having. -

I don't have the case number anymore I was given one but that was like three weeks ago and I thought everything was going fine and I didn't think I would need it anymore, so I got rid of it. -
I am having the same problem on my desktop and laptop, i install sp3, nothing, installed office 2003 sp3 nothing, i made sure the userdata persistance was enabled in internet exporer options like microsoft said, nothing, i uninstalled the adobe flash player like they say which i dont see what that has to do with it, nothing, it just keeps saying "The updates failed to install because there is something on your computer that is not allowing the updates to be install". Is Microsoft no longer supporting xp with updates to force every one to use vista which is not compatible with a lot of software that my business have to use. please help -

I don't know what happened, but today I was updating one of my blogs and my computer restarted by its self. When it came back on it went to windows update and started downloading and installed all the updates that wouldn't install before. there was like 250 to 300 updates, it took 2 hours and 12 minutes. Then the computer restarted by its self again and went to my desktop. I find this very strange. But it failed to install service pack 3 it said it wasn't compatible with my operating system's setup. what ever that means? -
Inappropriate? You can download the update manually and install service pack 3 on your own. I had to do it because it would not install the update through the Windows update service - I kept getting an error.
Here is the link:

I've tried that before. After I install service pack 3 the computer keeps restarting over and over and won't stop restarting. I have to catch the compaq screen and its very hard because it just flashes for only a second, and then I go in safe mode and remove it. Then the computer starts up like its supposed to. -
Inappropriate?I guess whatever it was fixed its self my computer is getting updates and installing them like its supposed to do. but i still would like to know what caused it and how to fix it, just in case it happens again. I hope it doesn't
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?try autopatcher.com; download autopatcher program. then extract it to a folder. then click apup.exe, a windows will pop up to choose whatever your selections are. then it will download all available downloads. after downloading, exit apup. click on autopatcher.exe to install. again check on the selections to install. autopatcher also offers tweaks to make xp less annoying. i think it also works on vista.
if you are using vista try this site to ask your question: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-in/wi...(en-us).aspx
