windows xp update deleted help and support
An xp update a couple of weeks ago deleted help and support. Online forums give convoluted instructions to make registry changes, which don't work. Somewhre I read to reinstall windows - you can't, it says you have a newer version already installed, go to help and support!!!

Inappropriate? As noted here, Microsoft offers free Technical Support on Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), available on the SP3 support site as noted at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/prod.... Customers are entitled to free unlimited installation and compatibility support for Windows XP SP3 when they update their older versions of Windows XP (from Windows XP RTM, SP1 or SP2), valid until April 14, 2009. (Visit the page for more info on service options and the policy).

I was told by an expert to never install SP3 because it causes some hardware on your computer to stop working. There is a way to set the updates to never install SP3. Look at these responses I got from Googling "turn off update to sp3". The web site is http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/a.... Turn off notification for only 1 update - MowGreen [MVP]

Click on the update icon when it appears in the Notifcation area.
UNcheck the box next to XP SP3, click OK
When the next window pops up put a mark next to 'Don't show me this
update again'. If Apply is available, click it, then OK, or Close.
That will hide XP SP3.
[Yes, one can hide SP3, BroBear <w>]

Uncheck SP3 in the update window and click next, it should give you the
option of ignoring it in the future.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:
Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)
2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:
Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.
3. Change your Automatic Updates setting to Notify Only (or else SP3 will be
downloaded again); see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525
4. Start the Automatic Updates service:
Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)
NB: You will not be able to "hide" WinXP SP3 but you can decline to
download/install it.

One *can* hide SP3 as I just did on a client's system last week,
BroBear. It's just like hiding any other update.

Inappropriate? If Microsoft screwed this up why don't they fix it?
-
Inappropriate?@glimco They will. I had an issue with SP3 and an outdated video driver. I sent a suppport email to Microsoft and had a response and solution in less than 24 hours.
You need to contact support, XP SP3 support is free. Microsoft can't fix it if you don't tell the right people it's broken. Get Satisfaction is usually for issues that support either can't or won't resolve. It sounds like votherl has not contacted support yet.
I’m trying to be helpful

Inappropriate?IMO, installing Windows XP SP3 is an appropriate thing to do for most consumers. And as noted in my previous post and woogychuck replied, Microsoft offers free Technical Support on Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Inappropriate?Try this.
Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Help and Support |
Set to Automatic under Startup type | Click the Apply button |
Click the Start button | Click OK | When the Help and Support service is
started close Services
copied from another answer found on the web... cheers! -
Inappropriate?zapache's solution didn't work for me. It showed that Help and Support were already on Automatic and were started. It is still not working!
I’m frustrated
