Inappropriate?I've just found the way to repeat the problem. You should simply put you finger on preentered text instead of just on a field, and then magnifier will appear and preentered text will still exist.

Wow ... great find .. I can recreate it here as well. What is interesting is that this may be a bug with the text element that ships with the iPhone API. I'll try to find a way to force it blank.
