PNG or SWF Overlay
I have been working with Modest maps building a portion of a snowboarder magazine web site. I have been asked if a ski map can be overlaid on top of modest maps; maybe a png or swf. I can't think how this could be done, with the map tiles. Just wondered if it is possible?

Inappropriate?Hi Matt,
Can you explain a little more about your ski map: is it an overhead view that's suitable for display on top of a road or aerial map? There's a number of ways to do this. Personally, I've been on something of a vision quest with tiled geographic imagery, so I could help you in that direction if you're comfortable with a little command line scripting. -
Inappropriate?Mike,
The question came out of a conversation about blending the real world ie. slippy tiles of real satellite imagery, with the abstract eg. generated swf or pngs of ski trails in a ski resort. Looking at an aerial satellite view of a ski resort in say google, is confusing. Its hard to make out individual trails, the extent of the skiing area etc. Usually resorts generate either a PDF, png or a swf of ski trails. What would be very cool is if you could combine modest maps with this type of abstract data source. Zooming into one zooms into the other. I imagine the abstract data would need to be georeferenced. Can't see how you could do the tiling on a swf, but interacting with a flash map overlaid on a slippy tiled satellite image offers exciting possibilities. But can it be done?
Cheers

Inappropriate?Hi Matt,
It definitely can be done. A more detailed answer depends on your comfort level with code and image preparation, and the specific ski maps you're working with. Can you provide more information, maybe a link to your maps and where you've gotten? -
Inappropriate?Mike,
The modest map I am building is at:
http://www.flexmappers.com/arkade
Using the options in the left box users can zoom down to a ski resort level.
The type of overlay swf I am thinking about would be (not built by me and not precisely what I need):
http://www.flexmappers.com/trailmap.swf
I'd like to overlay something like this or even an equivalent png image (with a .7 alpha or so) over the top of the ski resort modest map. I'm a Flex developer with some Flash/image processing experience.

Inappropriate?Hi Matt,
I'm not sure that map would be well-suited for an overlay, because it's an illustration in a bird's eye view style, rather than an overhead geographic projection. I'm just not sure it would mesh well with the underlying map tiles presented by modest maps, esp. in cases where the mountain faces a direction other than South.
Something you could do would be to use those ski maps as a guide, and add the trails and lifts to OpenStreetMap. I don't think they'd show up in the default render but I'd be happy to help you figure out how to do a custom ski overlay.
Have you seen these btw? http://www.jamesniehues.com/west-usa-... -
Inappropriate?Mike,
I'm excited. I'd love to be able to display ski resort trails and lifts on the modest map app I am building. Making it interactive (eg. mouse over a trail and a tooltip or equivalent appears naming the trail, its length etc) would be a great addition. Now knowing its possible, I'd really welcome some pointers on how best to do it.
Many thanks
ps. those trail maps are cool
I’m excited
