"motionbox" vs. Vimeo .... what are the big differences ?

There are a lot of differences, but to me, the big ones are:

    - Motionbox allows private videos to be embedded and viewed without your viewers needing to login to MB or remember a password. Vimeo does not. This is HUGE for me.

    - Motionbox has no limits on video length, upload size, or HD embeds. Even Vimeo "plus" users have a limit on what they can upload in a week, and HD embeds cost extra after 1000 plays. Of all Vimeo's faults, these limits are a biggie. I think they're really missing the boat here.

    - Motionbox is less expensive, especially considering Vimeo Plus's limitations. Hopefully MB is still able to be profitable given this price difference. I want them to be around for a long time!

    - MB shows 30p, Vimeo is limited to 24p. My 30p videos stutter in Vimeo because of the dropped frames, however Vimeo's 24p is more performant on marginal computer hardware.

    - Vimeo's player has some advantages. MB is actively working on their player though.

    - Vimeo's overall UI is slicker.

    - Motionbox's HD quality seems better than Vimeo's at full screen, mostly because of different scaling methods. Vimeo scales up a little sharper, but with more artifacts.

    - Vimeo is more social-networking-oriented. Whether that is a pro or con to you I can't say. Not an issue for me.

    Hi 0lli!

We love it when our members like stm (above) are able to articulate the differences between Motionbox and other video sharing services. It all sounds much better coming from people who *don't* work here. :)

Here's a link to a recent blog post by a Motionbox user who reviewed several other sites before deciding to use Motionbox as his provider: http://john-infante.com/2009/01/02/wh...

A couple of things this user points out that haven't been mentioned yet in this thread:

    - Motionbox offers some light editing features that many users find very helpful. You can stitch together short clips, and/or trim the "bad" parts out of longer videos. No desktop editing required.

    - With unlimited uploading and AVCHD support, you can upload "raw" HD video from your camcorder without having to convert/compress it first.

    - Motionbox Premium offers true archival storage of your videos. As a Premium member, you can download your source video at any time:

"...But Motionbox’s killer feature is that it pitches itself as a video archiving and storage site, not just a hosting site for viral videos. Premium members can download their original source video. That means that if you’re willing, you can upload a video to Motionbox, and delete it off your hard drive, while being fairly confident you can get the video back. Obviously this isn’t advised, but until I have a better way to store this stuff (anyone want to buy me a Drobo and some big ole hard drives?), it works for me..."

    Happy New Year!

I'd be careful how you use the words "archival storage", from your terms of service:

You shall be solely responsible for keeping a duplicate copy of all User Content that you post to the Website and we do not accept any responsibility or liability for the loss of your User Content.

The amount of storage space and bandwidth per member may be limited (and will differ between Motionbox Basic members and Motionbox Premium subscribers). Accounts may be archived, or user content may be purged at such time intervals as Motionbox or its third party service provider(s) determine in their sole discretion. Some user content may not be stored, served or processed due to space constraints, bandwidth limitations or disruptions in the system(s). You agree that Motionbox is not responsible or liable for the deletion or failure to store, serve or process any user content or other information.

Accounts may be terminated and/or deleted from our system or content may be removed from accounts if they remain inactive for a period of ninety (90) or more days. In the event of a suspension or deletion of an account, User Content may no longer be accessible...

Thanks for making this point, Chris.

At this time, our Premium service does offer an archival storage solution (we keep copies of the original video file which the owner can access and download at anytime) to customers for the duration of the member's subscription. We do not offer source storage or downloads to Basic (free) members. Both Basic and Premium members can access the optimized versions of their videos on the Motionbox site for as long as their memberships remain active.

We do always encourage all members (including Premiums) to keep duplicate copies of their videos, since no storage solution is completely fail proof.

In order to make room for new, active members, we periodically deactivate or delete content from Basic accounts that have been inactive for a very long time, but we always send email notification in advance and allow people time to come back and use their accounts without interruption.

Hope this clarifies some of your concerns. Please don't hesitate to ask us about our Terms and Conditions at any time. We do want and expect all of our members to read and understand them, and we are always glad to answer your questions....

Thanks for pointing out some things I missed. I was hoping an employee would chime in because I knew I missed some things that I don't use.

    Hi,

Please do keep mind that due to removal of content that is copyrighted or inappropriate and/or doesn't meet our terms of service, this type of content is subject to removal.

Also, Basic accounts are subject to removal should the accounts reamin inactive for more than 90 days. However, we email and warn Basic users ahead of any deactivation.

We do have to undergo limitations on certain bad or inactive accounts in order to maintain acceptable storage levels and costs.

Hope this clarifies a bit more - thanks for the continued input as our company grows!

    Best,
    Anita W.

Hi, Anita! Looks like we were both posting at the same time :) Thanks for
pointing out that "bad" content is always subject to removal. We have to keep things legal and clean on Motionbox!
