Automatic SD conversion for HD files.
Right now when I upload HD footage I have to click on the SD link to optimize the video for SD. Would it be possible to add an option on upload "Optimize HD for SD". Sometimes we forget to do this.
Thanks,
Corey

Inappropriate?Hi Corey,
Do you usually view and share your videos in the HD player or the SD player? If you use the SD player more than the HD player, you might want to change your Default Player settings to "SD" (I can see that currently you have it set to HD).
You can read more about what the default player setting is here: http://www.motionbox.com/content/help... and here's a direct link to the settings page: http://www.motionbox.com/user/edit_de.... Once you change your default player setting to SD, your videos will automatically optimize and play in the SD player each time.
Hope this helps!

Inappropriate?Corey,
It sounds like you'll want to default to the SD version in your "settings" for default player. Your "settings" are found on any page of Motionbox when logged in at the top right.
Your default player means it will automatically encode your video for that version first each time.
Thanks for posting and have a good day!

Inappropriate?By doing that, wouldn't he just have the same problem, only inverted (have to remember to click HD)? I think he's looking for both versions to be encoded by default. I'd love that too. :)

Inappropriate? That's a good point, stm. I asked Corey if he uses the SD player more than the HD player because although you can only set one player to encode automatically, he might as well make it the player he uses most! :)
Most of our users watch and share their videos in one player (the one that suits them best), so we optimize your videos automatically for the player of your choice, and let you set off optimization for the videos you may want to view in another player at times. In the past, we used to optimize all versions of your video, but that led to very long encoding times because our encoding queues would be double or triple the size! - and most of the videos being encoded in the different formats weren't being watched anyway, since most users stick to just one player.
So while users who like to take advantage of all of our players do have to set off optimization for their non-default players, they (usually) don't have to wait sooo long for their default player videos to optimize and can watch their videos relatively soon after uploading. That was sort of the thought process behind why we changed the way we encode videos - we were hoping this would provide a better experience for you guys :).
If encoding both SD and HD versions of your video is very important to you though, I will definitely pass on your requests to our product team.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the response Mona. I appreciate your outlining the decision process behind the current behavior. It makes a lot of sense that the first encoding should be the user's preferred version, and it also makes sense to stop there if most people don't need you to waste the CPU and storage for alternate versions.
On the other hand I'm finding that many people can't yet view HD video effectively. They just don't have the horsepower.
So if it were up to me (and there were no other constraints), I think I'd implement support for graceful fallback for people, by making a couple of changes. First, when an HD video is uploaded, automatically render HD and then an SD version. Second, put a toggle button in the player for HD/SD (being tossed around in another thread currently). I'm sure you folks are aware of Vimeo's similar approach, and I think it works really well.
I'm currently able to approximate this with some javascript and remembering to fire off the SD encoder after uploading, so I'm pretty content at this point, even though it's a bit of a hack.
In a related topic, when I upload an SD movie, it also gets the HD encoding (my default), but I don't see the advantage to this. I would think it'd be better to detect the size and encode only SD.
Thanks again, I appreciate the dialogue and interest that you folks show. -
stm: That makes total sense. I prefer not to go back and render the other version as well. The toggle seems the perfect solution, I like how Vimeo solves this.. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for all of your input, stm. We may say "we'll share your ideas with the rest of our team" often, but I just want to assure you....we're not kidding! :). You'll be happy to know that the SD/HD toggle button IS something we're definitely working on now (thanks to everyone's great feedback). You should hopefully be seeing it sometime in the near-ish future :). I'll let everyone know in the other thread, too.
Your other ideas are great too and I'll be sure to pass them on. Thanks again for your valuable feedback.
Best,
Mona H.
