Signed up for a paid account. Uploaded AVCHD files. So far unimpressed: Choppy video that doesn't look HD. What's going on?
I get notification that my video is uploaded. I view it, and apparently only in SD format. There is a link to an HD version that I click. It then says "Preparing to Optimize..." I check back later for the HD version, and it plays in a bigger screen, but the quality is not HD, and the video that does play is extremely choppy (even if I let it buffer).
I imagine I'm doing something wrong, so any guidance would be appreciated.
Cheers :)

Inappropriate?Hi findchris,
I have a feeling you might have your default player setting set to the SD player, which is why your videos always encode in SD and then you have to switch on the HD encoding. You can change your default player setting here: http://www.motionbox.com/user/edit_de.... This way, your videos will always automatically encode in the hD format.
Also, could you let us know the title of one of the videos you're unhappy with? We'll definitely check it out to see what the problem might be.
Thanks for your patience!
Best regards,
Mona H.

Inappropriate?Hi there.
Thanks for your reply.
The default player was SD player, which I've now changed to HD. Curious though: All of my original AVCHD files still reside at MotionBox, so when I click to convert and SD video to HD, it does this using the original full quality AVCHD files, correct? Also, for those videos already uploaded, do I need to manually start the HD conversion process?
Here is a video that seems to show a fair bit of artifacts and blurring:

Maybe it is just related to low light but it certainly doesn't seem to be full HD.
Thanks for the help!

Inappropriate?Hi Chris,
Yes, if your previous default was SD, then those videos will now need to be converted to HD and you can do this by clicking on the HD link below each video. This conversion will only need to be done once per video, ever. Also, yes, it does encode from your original AVCHD source.
Was this video source uploaded directly to Motionbox or was there any editing software used before the upload? We'll take a look at your video!
Kind regards,
Anita W.

Inappropriate?Ok. I will click the HD link for each video; no problem.
These videos were uploaded directly from the the memory chip as AVCHD (.mts) files.
Thanks again!

Inappropriate?Hi again.
I have uploaded more videos and playback is still choppy. I am online at work has a pretty fast internet connection, so I doubt that it's based on connectivity speed. Even when I let the video buffer completely, playback is choppy. Are there any plans to improve the video player?
Here is a video that plays back choppy for me:

Thanks,
Chris

Inappropriate?Hi Chris,
I'm sorry you're still having trouble. I played back this video with no problem. The only thing I noticed was some blips that I think were due to the quick camera movements. Maybe you could open this video up to the public so we can have other members tell us what they are seeing?
Also, what browser are you using? Have you tried a different browser? That could help. The system and connection requirements for HD playback are higher than those for SD playback, so keep that in mind.
Let us know if trying a different browser helps. And just in case, make sure you have the latest version of Flash on your computer. You can find it here: http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/
If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks for all your patience!

Inappropriate?Hi Kristi.
Thanks for looking into this.
I have watched several of my videos, and taking into account the "blips" that might be due to "quick camera movement", I am still finding that the encoding done my motionbox does not handle HD video well when there is much movement on the screen. There is stuttered playback and motion blur that is not there when I watch the content I've imported into Final Cut.
Interestingly, when I download the video from motionbox as an .mp4, the playback is smoother. I've tried using both Firefox and Safari with the same result.
Could you check with your tech team about motion blur and stuttering in HD web playback?
Thanks again,
Chris

Inappropriate?Hi Chris,
We've played back your video on a few different computers here and aside from some quick camera movement, the video plays generally well for us. I believe the issues you're experiencing may have to do with the video's high quality and a combination of internet connection or computer speed, and therefore the higher quality encodes of your video (HD and possibly SD) requiring more resources than available.
Have you been able to try to view your videos on a different computer or possibly even a different Internet connection? Also, is it possible your video card drivers may need to be updated? (We definitely advise this kind of update with caution, however.) Playing your videos without running other programs on your machine might help more as well.
Thanks and we do hope the best outcome for your playback.
Kind regards,
Mona H.

Inappropriate?Hi there.
I have tried on different computers, browsers, and internet connections, and the quality of the video does not match that of watching it locally on my machine. I can only conclude that it's either:
(a) The encoder.
(b) The player.
Is there a way to encode the HD quality video and watch it on a player the size of the vimeo.com player? Maybe the size of the player makes a difference in perceived quality of playback as the vimeo player consistently looks nice as crisp, and without stuttering.
Thanks,
Chris

Inappropriate?Hi Chris,
Do you have your videos embedded on a blog or website anywhere? If so, you can actually play around with the embed code a bit to make the size of the embedded player much bigger. This way you'll be able to see what your videos look like in a larger player. You can see a blog post on how to change the size of the embedded player here: http://www.motionbox.com/content/theb...
–For standard 4:3 videos, you may go with 640×480, or half that (320×240)
–For HD 16:9 videos, you may go with 1280×720, 960×540, or 640×360
I hope this helps somewhat!
Best,
Mona H.

Inappropriate?I see. Thanks for the reply.
So just to confirm, there's only one size for HD video on motionbox.com?
-Chris -
Inappropriate?Hi Chris,
Correct. On the Motionbox site, there is only one size for HD video, which is 960x540. This is also assuming that the video is true HD quality.
I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, just let us know!
Many thanks,
Kristy K.

Inappropriate? No problem! I also just wanted to give you some more information, for your reference.
When you upload an HD video that is 1280x720, we encode it in those exct specifications. However, our HD Player is 960x540, to accommodate the max size of most computer screens. When you play that true HD video in fullscreen, you will get the original 1280x720 aspect ratio.
Also, do note that the SD player is a smaller format - 640x480.
I hope this helps! I just wanted to pass along this info that I got from my engineering team. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to let us know.
Thanks!
