Can I use any external BB on a 2004 San Andreas XC?
I have a FSA V-Drive Extreme with ISIS BB at the moment. The BB needs replacing and I wondered if it might be worth moving to an external BB with a new chainset. With this in mind I wondered if anyone could offer any advice on whether such a replacement is possible and worthwhile. Cheers.

Inappropriate?Hi Fred
Yes. This is exactly the same, for any bike, from any constructor; the outboard bearing system introduced by Shimano in 2003 and was designed to replace the inboard bearings.
You should have absolutely no problems.

Inappropriate? There are a few really good quality ISIS BB's now so don't write it off just yet! I've never had any problem with the Race Face Signature series (+ the bearings have grease ports) and the SKF's are apparently fantastic. http://www.superstarcomponents.com/IS... is a nice set up as well, I'll probably try this one if I ever can't get replacement bearings for my RF's.
I'd say it isn't worth it if the cranks/rings are ok.

Inappropriate? The Superstar components look good. I'm not sure the Cranks really need replacing so I will give them a good look over before I make a final decision. I really appreciate your reply. Fred.
I’m off the check the cranks

No problem! Superstar are getting a good reputation in the UK for headsets/BB's etc and the idea on the IRB is sound, I don't remember killing a Shimano cartridge unit when I was younger.
