Blank Screens !!
About every third time I start the computer, the Google home page and all my bookmarks in the sidebar disappear and I get a screen that has only the Home icon working! NOTHING ELSE does! In the sidebar I have the word Bookmarks with and "x" on the right side and a Search space below that that does nothing. I am about to get rid of Mozilla Firefox as my browser as it has been a very frustrating experience trying to chase things all over the place

Inappropriate?Moved this over from the Foxmarks category--I'm pretty sure this is an issue with Firefox rather than the Foxmarks extension.
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for the move Eric. :-)
Everret, lets try safe mode. steps are outlined here.
Also, can you answer a few questions.
What operating system are you using?
What version of Firefox are you using?
Do you have any add-ons?
Can you go to a site and have it show up? (like http://support.mozilla.com)
Do you have any firewalls or security programs?

Inappropriate?I have this problem ~90% of the time I use Firefox.
Here's my understanding of the issue and how I fix it.
[below is what happens to me, and my uneducated guess at why]
When I close Firefox, the process doesn't close. Instead, "firefox.exe" stays in my task manager. Then, when I go to open a new window (because I thought Firefox was closed) the application runs into some kind of error with two identical processes trying to access the same profile (chrome profile?). The original process still has precedence (control over all my bookmarks, homepage, etc.) so the second process is given nothing. Just a blank screen. It happens VERY frequently.
My fix is to simply kill every "firefox.exe" process in my task manager, then reopen Firefox. Works great then.
I would assume this is some kind of awful memory leak of improper closure of the entire application.
I was literally about to open a thread about this.
edit:
I just want to be clear about the FACTS of what happens to me:
-I close Firefox
-firefox.exe stays in my task manager after the window closes
-new instances of the browser do not have any of my preferences, favorites, homepage, etc.
Those are the facts, the rest is just my ponderings.
I’m sad that fx isn't perfect, I have it up on such a high pedestal

ok, try safe mode (link above)
and answer the questions above. -
This article also might help, http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/F...
I think that is the error you are getting, correct? -
No I don't get any errors. I do get that error every now and then, but in the time I take to click "ok" the old firefox process usually closes and it works fine. That's just a matter of me doing things a little too fast for the 'ol processor.
In the case of my blank screens, and I assume the OPs case as well, there is no error. It just happens sometimes without warning or notification.
Unfortunately, it doesn't happen all the time, and now is one of them. I can't get it to do it.
As for answering the questions:
1)Windows Vista Ultimate v6.0 build 6001
2)Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092417 Firefox/3.0.3
3)I have a bunch of addons, is there are easy way to dump a list of them?
4)definitely
5)Norton 360 / Windows Defender, plus, I'm behind a University network, which blocks P2P, if that gives you an idea of how 'awesome' they are. -
After extensive testing (it really did take me a while), I've come to the conclusion that my FoxyTunes extension is causing the improper closure &/or memory leak. I've disabled the extension for now and the problem hasn't reappeared.
I'll reply to the OP and ask specifically about FoxyTunes. -
Inappropriate?@everett: Are you using any extensions? In particular, are you using the FoxyTunes extension?
I’m satisfied that I solved one of my own problems
