Display Ubiquity messages on Linux
The firefox add-on "fire.fm" has a messaging service which works nice on my Linux stations.
Perhaps it could be used for the Ubiquity messages as well?

Please consider sending DBus signals on notifications, other applications - like my growl-like http://www.mumbles-project.org could pick them up & display them (among other things).
libnotify is another de-facto popup library that would work. Even then, libnotify in combination with a DBus signal would be greatly appreciated.
I have a DBus FF extension (which can be used in conjunction w/ mumbles) here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire...
(it needs to be updated to work with 3.0 - last update just covered 3.0b)
I would be more than happy to contribute where I can.

Inappropriate? What is Ubiquity? Is this a form of messaging service on Linux, or is it a Firefox addon which does not display messages in the way that fire.fm does?
-
Ubiquity is a new Firefox add-on which lacks a messaging system on Linux.
You can check it out here:

It is great! -
Ok, I haven't used fire.fm, do they use DBus like dot_j says below? Or is it toaster style popups like Twitterfox does? -

DBus is in progress, but if you'd like to help that progress along, check this bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug... -
I definitely think libnotify would be the best implementation for this. Seems to be de facto standard for GNOME.
Maybe it's possible to combine DBus and libnotify in some way? (If I recall, it is possible to communicate with libnotify over DBus, for example.) -
As i understand it, D-Bus is the ONLY way to talk to notification-daemon and libnotify is just a simple convenience wrapper around the D-Bus API for it.

Whoops, notification-daemon is definitely what I meant, not libnotify. And I didn't realize the Galago project was behind that; my apologies. -
How does this differ from dot_j's mumbles project? If it works in the same manner, then it won't get notifications either. -
To be honest, I'm not sure of the details. I use a pidgin plugin that uses Galago, and it works very nicely. -
I haven't tried mumbles, but the main difference seems to be that Galago comes standard on several major distros, is easy to install on many more, and things like Deluge Torrent bundle plugins for it.
In contrast, I hadn't even heard of mumbles and, on Gentoo, it seems to not be in the portage tree. -
I did a little more reading. Mumbles apparently has a plugin to make it listen for Galago notifications and, according to the FAQ, the rationale for creating mumbles was "I didn't know much about Galago/libnotify, I thought it couldn't be themed to make it prettier, and I wanted to work in Python"
In other words, support the Galago/libnotify API if anything. Mumbles can handle its notifications if necessary.
