What I hate most about Firefox 3 is that it no longer remembers separate directories for saved images and downloaded files.

Inappropriate?Mardeg (in #firefox on irc.mozilla.org) says the "download sort" extension did that in Firefox 2, and has not been updated. Did you perhaps have that extension, and it got disabled upon upgrading? You can check by going to Tools -> Addons, and looking to see if it's there but disabled. If it is there, the author is working on an upgrade.
