Firefox 3 new tab address bar
Firefox 3.0.4 (ever since 3.0) has had a weird little problem when i open new tabs. The address bar isn't cleared on the new tab. It just keeps the address of the last tab i had open. It's not really a major problem just bothersome.
When I try 3.1 beta the problem doesn't exist. But, I'm too dependent on all the awesome addons available. I'm using windows xp pro 64 bit.

Inappropriate? It's actually probably because you're using 3.1 beta too with the same profile. I've had similar issues when using two different versions of Firefox with the same profile, it's just a bad idea.
-
Inappropriate?I actually noticed this before I installed the beta (it was the reason why i installed the beta.) But I uninstalled the beta release and restarted 3.0 and it didn't really help. I searched mozilla's site for something similar to this with no luck.
If you know of something on their site that might help i would be grateful -
Inappropriate?In #sumo on irc.mozilla.org:
[22:57:11] < Tom> http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla/to... no idea what his problem is
[23:02:17] <@zzxc> he mentions all his awesome extensions in 3.0 - so probably one of those
[23:09:53] < Tom> i'm sure
So, can you post a dump from Extension List Dumper?

Inappropriate? It was the skype addon that is automatically installed when you install skype on your computer. I uninstalled it and the problem is gone.
Thanks :)

Xor42, I had done it before, but didn't work for me. I uninstalled google toolbar 5 beta, and reinstalled version 4. Apparently, it had solved the problem, but after a few hours using Firefox, the problem re appeared. I reinstalled google toolbar 5 beta, and did what DJ suggest: uncheck the 'Provide suggestions for incorrect of unavailable URLs' in the options. Now, my Firefox is working fine... at least for now. I recommend to read DJ comments on this issue. -
There is a bit of a difference in our steps. It seems that v4 has been removed as non-beta version. As of this writing, when you request an install, the current release version (not beta) you get is v3.1.20081127W (not v4x). So, for me, at least for the last 30 hours, version 3.1.20081127W of the Toolbar with FireFox 3.0.5 seems to work as expected. Did you try that specific combination?
Regarding your "Provide Suggestion" option suggestion, I can't find it in v3.1.20081127W so it's a moot point. I find it ineresting that there is so little operational or visual difference between v3.1.20081127W and v5 beta - apart from the option you metioned. Beling the same, I'll run with v3.1.20081127W for a while since, to my eyes, it looks identical to v5. It even has the customize layout feature which I havet tried yet. I thought that was only a later versions but it seems to be in v3 as well. I'll report back if v3.1.20081127W fails me after some more banging. -
I had the same problem. I've used Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 with my main profile and then uninstalled it (because it refuses to let me edit my tags on Bookmarks Manager — a bug). I was wondering if the problem was with this version messing with my profile.
But, alas, deactivating Skype extension solved the problem. Simple as that. Thanks, Todd Jones. -

Inappropriate?New tabs just don't work. All my Firefox 3.x installations all fail on newly created tabs the very same way. New tabs open with "(blank)" with the last tabs URL still in the address bar. Any attempt to enter a new URL via manual entry or via bookmarks end up switching the previous tab, not the current new tab. The only way to get the new tab to go anywhere is to use an existing tab and click any link that may be on its currently displayed page with the open-links-in-a-new-tab option turned on. I can't believe this huge problem isn't all over the Internet. I had to switch back to Internet Explorer. Unbelievable! I get this problem on 3.02-3.04 on XP and Vista. I'm currently downloading 3.05 but am not holding my breath.

I'm very sorry, but I can't help you in this thread, as it's about a completely different subject. Might I ask why you chose to reply to this thread instead of creating a new thread, are the tools here confusing? I have noticed a trend of this kind of thing, and think that if the confused users air their complaints, that we can get things fixed and less confusing. -
I have exactly the same problem. It's not the Skype extension, it's not tabmix plus... I don't know what else to do! -
I have found what the true problem is with new tab erraticism. When you createa new tab and the probem exists, then when you select the new tab, the URL bar address does not change and the previous tab is still selected. Thus, when you go to a new address, the last tab is reloaded to that new address, not the new tab. Very infuriating. And, for this, I have yet another temporary fix. In my latest Firefox version 3.0.5, I have the ColorTabs addon. I disabled that and now new tabs respond as they should and are selectable and show an empty URL. Previously, you could not select the new empty tab. You thought you did but the last used tab was actually selected. However, please note, I had this problem BEFORE I installed that add on and with previous 3x versions so I think the problem is much deeper in the code and possibly related to the programmatic hooks that are used by addons. To wit: Disabling various other addons have also fixed the problem only to have it return with some other addon or change or update. Hmmm... -
xor42,
I still have that problem, although I don't have ColorTabs addon. I've been trying uninstalling serveral addons, but no luck so far. I will tell the forum if I find a solution, but right now, I am using Chrome... Too bad. -
I spoke too soon. As I previously reported, the problem returned unexpectedly a few minutes later even though ColorTab was still disabled. This strongly suggests the problem is not AddOn specific. The actual problem is that you are not able to select a new tab, though you may think you did. Thus, when you create a new tab, click it to ensure it is selected, then use a book mark or enter a URL in the address bar, the PREVIOSLY used tab is loaded, not the new tab which remains naked. Clicking the new tab a zillion times does nothing and the address bar is unchanged since it still refects the previously used tab. Argh! This is really frustrating. I've had to return to IE. Boy! -
I have exactly the same problem!!! -
ARGH! I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT THESE EXTENSIONS, SO I'M GONNA SWITCH TO A BROWSER THAT DOESN'T HAVE THEM. THE IRONY OF THIS IS TOTALLY LOST ON ME. -
Are you installing a completely fresh firefox, with no addons whatsoever? If not, that is what I recommend doing and reinstalling addons one at a time for a while until you find out what is causing the problem.
Good luck :) -
Firefox is pretty smart. Extensions are installed into your profile folder so that they'll survive upgrades. And uninstalls/reinstalls. So you really mean he should start a new profile: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/M... -

Yeah that makes more sense. I just uninstalled all of my addons manually, yours
is a better solution. -
Could it be google toolbar beta for Firefox? I uninstalled it, and Firefox it seems that the problem disappears... at least for now!
Noup... it wasn't the google toolbar beta either. -
Moris, like Thomas said, your best bet on figuring this out is to start a new profile. This way it's a 'fresh' install and you can install the different addons that you have until one causes your problem again. -
Todd, I actually did that. It worked for a while, but the problem remains. I even tried installing FF 2.0. -
I may have fixed my new tab problem. After my last comment, I tried one more variation. I completely uninstalled Google Toolbar which was the latest version 5.x beta most people have been using for some time now, exited FireFox, restarted FireFox, then went back to Toolbar.Google.com. I then downloaded and installed using the "Download Google Toolbar", not "Try Google Toobar 5 (BETA)" of Google Toolbar. That will install the much older version 3.1.20081127W. I guess there was no version 4x. Voila (he says with crossed figers), it seems to be working for more than 24 hours with all my other doodads activated like ColorfulTabs, CoolIris, and DownLoadthemAll, But I've said that before. However, this time, it has remained fixed across browser sessions. If this is the fix, it suggests that Google Toolbar 5 inserts some feature hookups into the new tabs logic stream. I surmise that based on the fact that with the 5 Beta Toolbar installed, the disabling of other addons sometimes fixes the problem but only for a short time. Anyway, her'es hoping! -
Inappropriate?i am using 3.0.5, and i am not using skype but i still got the problem,
it was working fine, i installed Google gears and that started all problems. i have uninstalled it but continue to have this problem.
addons installed:
adbolck plus
download statusbar
extended statusbar
fastdial
greasemonkey
idm cc
ie tab
java quick starter
orkut toolbar
switch proxy
tab mix plus
tab scope -
I'm betting it's tab mix plus or tab scope, have you checked their options panels? -
Inappropriate?it was actually ie tab that was causing the problem.
thanks for the help

I don't have ie tab, but do have this problem! -
Moris actually doesn't have the problem he thinks you had. He thinks you had an inability to open tabs. You actually had no problem opening new tabs, but the location bar had the URL of the previous tab in it. -
Inappropriate? It seems that the problem is almost always some 3rd party add-on. But thanks for helping us out anyway :)
-
That's why we need more reviews on AMO about problem-causing addons. -
I was going to write one on skype, but it's not even on the site. The only way i see to add it is to install skype again. -
Inappropriate?I am anxious, confused and frustrated for this issue!
I’m anxious, confused y frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I have to use the scroll button of my mouse to open new liks... very annoying.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Moris, I don't even understand what your issue is. You seem to claim to have xor42's issue, which I said I cannot help with in this thread as it's unrelated. But you ignored my post about how I can't help because it's for a different thread, and posted anyway.
So: Do you have an issue where new tabs have the same URL as the old tab in the location field? Or does Ctrl+T not open new tabs for you? If it's the second one, start a new thread, because I can't help here, although you are so frustrated and anxious and confused that you keep mashing the reply button and filling my inbox with junk.
I’m sad
-
Thomas, I am sorry if I didn't myself clear. My problem is "The address bar isn't cleared on the new tab. It just keeps the address of the last tab i had open." I also have wor42 problem: "Any attempt to enter a new URL via manual entry or via bookmarks end up switching the previous tab, not the current new tab."
Do you have any idea of how to solve this issue? If not, please don't reply. I promise I won't use "Get Satisfaction (!)" any more.
Best regards,
Moris -
I just don't like receiving 5 e-mails in a row because someone can't stop making new replies to himself. I'm not saying don't use GSFN, I'm saying don't flood peoples inboxes (the other people in this thread who are subscribed are getting them too). -
Inappropriate?Moris, please post a dump from Extension List Dumper so we can see what you have. Just because you don't have the Skype extension nor the IE tab extension doesn't mean they're the only possible problematic extensions.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?I had the exact same problem that is stated in the beginning of this thread, and what Mr.Thomas, the firefox rep is talking abt. clicking on new tab just created a new tab, but control stayed with the old tab. by control i mean clicking on bookmarks or entering in new url in the "newly opened" tab resulted in nothing, and it was actually the old tab that changed. also included was the old-url-staying-in-new-tab problem as well.
well, i think i got it figured out.
it seems, the problem began since yesterday, and i think exactly after i installed the new google toolbar 5 beta for firefox. i just removed the beta google toolbar and reinstalled the awesome older stable version, and the problem solved automatically, voila!
i'm sure not all of you have google toolbar installed, and so my answer isnt a rigorous solution, but i'm just putting out what worked for me, and i hope it works for you as well.
I’m thankful and relieved
-
Dj Das, I did exactly the same thing (uninstalling google toolbar 5 beta). The problem seemed to be solved, but it came back! -
define "came back". and please tell how and what you did -

Actually, if you have the problem go to Dj Das link anyway, as it lets you tell Google that you're seeing the problem, and maybe they can eventually fix it! -
firefox works perfectly fine. i even rebooted the comp just to check if the change wasnt temporary. i havent tried out the google method yet, but i am sure it works as it is an official solution released by google, so they must definitely have extensively checked and cross-tested it. however, mind the caveat. they do say its a "temporary" solution, so, i think the cat is still out of the bag >.< -
Inappropriate?I mean that the problem persists: For me, it was a temporary solution. I am trying Avant Browser now.
-
hmm. when was the last time you didnt face this problem? like, how many days ago did you first face this issue? and what have you done immediately before or during that time-frame to your browser? i am sure firefox didnt mess up all by itself, which means it must have been some external action, either by the user, or by some add-on that either updated the wrong way or had some bugs in it. but this seems to be a major and widespread problem, sort of like an easter egg, and i get the feeling it is so widespread because a lot of people do use google toolbar and trust google a lot, so they installed it on firefox and ended up messing with the tabs. google itself acknowledges the error. you might want to go to the link i posted before and see the solution they have. it could work out for you. i am pretty sure it was some inconspicuous action on the part of the users themselves that has led to this problem.
Hope i helped :) -
Inappropriate?Ok. I must admit that the problems happens randomly. Just now, before trying up the solution of the google support team that you sugested, Fire Fox opened correctly (it opened the original three homepages I had set up). Nontheless, I nn-checked the 'Provide suggestions for incorrect or unavailable URLs' checkbox. Let's see how it works! Thanks, Dj Das.

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p...
and another. and now i am definitely sure this solution works, although temporarily. however, google does say that it will resolve it in the stable version for toolbar for firefox that it will release soon. so, until then u can follow this workaround. if the problem still comes back, then it is because the "un-check" automatically goes back to "checked" after a while. so just go to the wrench icon and do the thing over again.
its a beta version, so we have to put up with this. but i am definitely sure it will be resolved in the stable version. i trust google, lol! -
Inappropriate? Thanks a lot. I'll check frequently the Provide suggestions for incorrect or unavailable URLs' checkbox.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?i'm still surprised people havent figured out the solution to this problem yet
or if they have, then they shud really comment here and let everyone know what was it that was causing this problem for them (if there is another cause besides the google toolbar) and how they managed to fix the problem (i.e if they have fixed it) or what happened when they tried to follow some of the tentative solutions that have been submitted here.

As I said, the google toolbar solution (uncheching the 'Provide suggestions..' box worked for me. Thanks. -
Inappropriate?Removing the Google toolbar seems to be working for me for a few days already
-
Inappropriate?I have uninstalled skype add-on and restarted firefox and i am still having this problem unfortunately.
-
There are other add-ons that could potentially cause this problem. I would disable them one at a time until you find the culprit -
Inappropriate?Uninstalling Skype worked for 5 minutes. Now the URL bar is empty again.
So annoying.
I’m angry, vexed.
-
Inappropriate?SOLVED: To me no matter with skype.
I just had the same problem in Firefox 3.0.15 on Ubuntu 9.04
Then I discovered that the user running Firefox ( user ) did not have rights on the file
/home/user/.mozilla/firefox/xxxxxxxx.default/places.sqlite-journal
( user and xxxxxxxx should be substituted with your proper values)
This file had become a root's file, maybe because last time I ran Firefox with sudo.
The following command definitely solved my problem:
sudo chown user /home/user/.mozilla/firefox/xxxxxxxx.default/places.sqlite-journal
Hope this will help
