Inappropriate?Hi my name is Josh (:myles7897), I volunteer giving support at Live Chat, http://support.mozilla.com/chat.
The most common types of crashes are caused by add-ons. Please try safe mode. Safe Mode is a special way of running Firefox that temporarily disables extensions, themes and toolbar changes. If your problem stops while in this mode, we can find the item that is causing the trouble.
Full safe mode instructions are at http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode.
If safe mode doesn't fix the problem try this article, http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firefox....
I understand that if crashes are random, it is going to be hard to troubleshoot in safe mode. If this is the case just supply me with the add-ons that you have installed and I'll see what I can do.

I’m in love with Firefox 3

Inappropriate? That is a lot of crashes. Did you try safe mode?
I will take a look at these crash reports.
I’m surpised at the number of crashes reports.
-
Inappropriate?Ok, so our crash report system is not working. Can you give me the links. On the about:crashes page just right click > copy link location. Do this for the three oldest crashes. That way their reports are sure to have been submitted.
I’m mad at the crash report system.
-
thank you.
how's safe mode coming? -
what add-ons do you have ? -
Inappropriate?I switched over to using IE for the time being. No point in using firefox if I can't use extensions.
Here's a list:
AI Roboform Toolbar
Delicious Bookmarks
Download Statusbar
Google Global
Google Toolbar
SearchStatus
SEO for Firefox -
Wait, what? How is using IE without extensions better than using Firefox without extensions? How is using IE better than, say, K-Meleon? -
Look, I use this for work. IE = no crashes. Firefox at the moment = crashes.
Of course I prefer Firefox BECAUSE OF the extensions and all the things it does to make my life easier. But I am also pragmatic. If I have to keep retyping my emails because Firefox is crashing, then obviously I need to stop using it until it is fixed. -
Not to mention safari. I keep trying to hang on to firefox, but as the crashiness grows, I tend to find safari a more and more compelling replacement. All things equal (i.e. no extensions) safari is just better. -
Scott: I agree on your first sentence, IE should not be your "fallback". Anything but IE, really. -
Mine seems to crash when using the Google toolbar. I put a search query in the search box and...CRASH! I've disabled the toolbar and no crashes since...may be a coincidence, but I noticed that you also use the Google toolbar. -
Inappropriate? The point of trying this without addons is to find out if they are at fault - if they are, then the next step is to find out which one is causing your crashes through process of elimination. This takes a little bit of time, depending on how easily and consistently you were able to reproduce the crashes before, but with 7 extensions to try, it's probably not going to take too long.
Once you've narrowed it down to the addon that's causing your crash, you'll be able to continue using the others. Filing a report with the addon's author wouldn't hurt eithe, and would also benefit other users of that addon greatly.
Also, many addons have several viable alternatives - so you may even be able to find one that does what you need without crashing and without waiting for an update from the addon's author.
I hope this helps you to solve your problem, if you have more questions, please don't hesitate to ask. -
Inappropriate?I hate to be a crank, but if firefox is _allowing_ extensions to crash the browser, it really is firefox's fault.
You control the operating environment, you should have an environment in place to catch and disable offending extensions individually. -
There already is a environment in place, extensions that crash the browser are not allowed on addons.mozilla.org, but since people can add 'exceptions' to the addon installer (they are exceptions for this very reason) to install un-approved extensions, problems occur. I'm looking into getting you a more detailed explanation link. -
Not allowing crash-causing extensions in addons.mozilla.org is marginally useful at best, annoying at worst (Why can't I find XXXX extension here?). An acceptable solution would be to prevent crashes. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no technical reason that FF shouldn't be able to do this. -
I started a thread about this for you, feel free to chime in: http://groups.google.com/group/mozill... -
Inappropriate?Firefox without add-ons is a slower Safari. The only reason I'm still using Firefox is because of Firebug.
I’m thankful for firebug
-
Not really, I've seen a lot of rendering issues in Safari that I don't see in Firefox. I could give you examples, but you'd tell me that's the developers fault (which is obviously why I have seen griping from developers about the pain of supporting Safari ;) ). -
Personally, I'd prefer a browser I could use all day to one with a fewer rendering issues. -
Inappropriate?OK, so I disabled EVERYTHING and went back to square zero with firefox, then re-enabled the add-ins I use on a daily basis.
Delicious Bookmarks - fine.
Google Toolbar - fine.
AI Roboform - crashes. So looks like this is the culprit for now.

this solves the problem

Inappropriate?I'm not a developer... at least not on any Mozilla projects, but the kind of isolation that would be needed to catch these sort of crashes 100% of the time would likely severely limit the extensibility of Firefox. Right now, the level of access addons have is very loosely restricted, which is why there's a great deal of emphasis placed on getting addons through secure channels, and on at least basic code review for addons distributed over "official" channels such as addons.mozilla.org. There's also an addon blocklist, described at http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/A... which lists "dangerous" addons - ones with a high potential to make the browser entirely unusable or which are known to have serious security risks. This blocklist is updated periodically and the browser will prevent such extensions from installing or from being loaded at startup. If a particular extension can be demonstrated to be responsible for a large number of crashes or for a security issue, a bug can be filed, and it will be considered for the blocklist.

Inappropriate?I'm having this problem, too ... since 7-11-2008. Hard to tell if it's a windows update or a firefox add-on issue at this point ... it just happens at random on some sites or when clicking some links ... the screenshot is from reddit.com when I clicked a link to a youtube video

I downloaded Safari, thinking to try it out ... but I am hoping the geeks at mozilla will figger this issue out soon and provide a fix. meanwhile, I'm considering Safe Mode and to try to troubleshoot the problem myself, though with all the potential variables, I can't say I'm looking forward to spending my valuable weekend/time-off chasing bugs :(
I’m misanthropic

Inappropriate?Vishnu:
I am sorry to hear that you are having Firefox problems. I am glad to hear that you are trying safe mode, to help speed up the process, can you please list your add-ons. I might be able to figure out which one is causing the problem.
You can also try some of the stuff in this article, http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Firefox....
I hope that solves the problem.

Inappropriate? Here's a scrnsht of my add-ons, at least the extensions ... I have themes and plug-ins, too, of course, but I'm assuming you're asking for the "extensions". I've had these installed without issue for weeks ... this crash problem just started in the past day or two ... meanwhile, I'm taking Opera for a test drive now, since ff keeps crashing <sigh> and I may try Safari, too, before I resort to IE <gag> :)
Thanks for your help :)</gag></sigh> -
hmmm ... would be nice if the screenshot were a link rather than a reduced version of the original ... <sigh>
</sigh> -
Instead, why not install the extension called Extension List Dumper, and then post a text version? -

Inappropriate?Same problem here but always caused by Quicktime module and Google tool bar. Disabled google toolbar already and crashes have lessened.
But FF still freezes and crash about 20 times a day and the culprit is Quicktime plugin.
I’m waiting for a patch-update !
-
Are you sure it's Quicktime? You've disabled JUST quicktime and that stops the crashes? Because I rarely encounter a quicktime file so the plugin is almost never called, for me. -
Inappropriate?Well I have this problem too.
The main thing it's totally random. Sometimes it stops until I restart the computer, sometimes FF crashes every 5 mins...
I disabled all add-ons, tried to run safe mode without addons, nothing works.
One thing is strange: when I enable all of my addons, I get Data Execution Prevention messages from Windows (Vista). When I disable all addons, I get Crash Reports from FF itself...
I’m tired of dealing with this problem, cuz FF it's just so great to use!!
-
Since this crash is quite different from the one originally reported in this thread, could you please create a new thread? Get Satisfaction does not yet have a feature where I could manually split your post, otherwise I would have taken care of this for you, sorry. -
Also, when you make the new thread, go to about:crashes in the address bar and copy the crash IDs (if you actually submitted the Firefox crash reports), so that I can see what caused your crashes. -
Okay done it
Here's the link: http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla/to... -
Inappropriate?Google toolbar 2.0.1 - probably installed with IrfanView 4.20 is what's causing the issue for me. All other extensions work perfectly for me. I uninstall it though Firefox, but it keeps appearing upon reboot. I wonder if it's a virus masquerading as Google Toolbar.
-
Inappropriate?I'm now having a crash anytime I try to do a right click 'save image as' I've gone so far as to reload firefox, with no change
-
Try doing it in Safe Mode and see if it still crashes. If it doesn't, then you should disable all your extensions then enable them one by one until you find the culprit. -
Inappropriate?me too. I crash more than i browse.. it's now becoming mozilla firecrash.. i am completely losing my patience.. anybody found a solution yet?
-
There is no panacea because the cause of the problem varies. It is like the common cold. Here, follow the instructions in this reply: http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla/to... -
Inappropriate?I have the latest version of FF and this morning when I started up, it loaded an update to Cool Iris which crashed FF. I am running Vista HP 64 bit with a 64 bit processor. Never had any major problems until this one. I started FF in "Safe-Mode" and disabled Cool Iris. Problem solved... Am I the only one this has happened to? My only issue is that I like Cool Iris and have been using it since it was Pic-Lens.
