firefox crashes when I access wikipedia or w3.org
Every time I click on a link or past the url for either a wikipedia page or a w3.org Firefox (3.0.8-Intel Mac) crashes. Is this a Firefox bug? I've reported this many many times.

This report also contains technical information about the state of the application when it crashed.
The website I was linking to was:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSS
This was just one of numerous examples of crashing for websites involving wikipedia.org or w3.org.
At this point I cannot use Mozilla/Firefox for either of these two important sites.

Ok, this is the second time someone has ignored what I said and copy pasted that information. Can you please go to the location bar, the address bar, whichever you call it, and type about:crashes? I know Firefox opens, because you only crash on two sites. You can open Firefox and go to about:crashes. -
Inappropriate?Sorry, Thomas. I had no idea what you were talking about. I complied with what I "thought" you meant. Here are the "crash ids" going back to Jan09...

Thanks for your help... -
Hmm, does it also crash at Adobe.com per http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtop... and http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report... ? -
Inappropriate?[Hmm, does it also crash at Adobe.com per http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtop... and http://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report... ?]
No. No problem is evident when I click on those links in your post. -
The links I posted MENTION that you'd crash on Adobe.com. Here: http://www.adobe.com -
Inappropriate?I get it, Thomas. There have been various crashes in the past. I never noticed a specific pattern until the last couple of months with wikipedia and w3.org links. These links continue to crash almost every time. btw - did I mentioned I'm on an Intel Mac platform, if it matters. (Macbook)
-
You do get the crash on adobe? Also, your crashes were from 3.0.7, are you on 3.0.8 now? -
Inappropriate? No. No problem going to the www.adobe.com. Yes, I'm on 3.0.8 now.
Here is a crash from today for www.wikipedia.org:

Inappropriate? Some additional crashes this morning in an attempt to replicate the problem:

So far today, www.w3.org links appear to be working. Btw, I am on an Intel Mac if this matters (Macbook). -
All 3 of them say this is the crash: gfxAtsuiFontGroup::GuessMaximumStringLength() (which is supposed to do the following:)
ATSUI can't handle offsets of more than 32K pixels. This function guesses a string length that ATSUI will be able to handle. We want to get the right answer most of the time, but if we're wrong in either direction, we won't break things: if we guess too large, our glyph processing will detect ATSUI's failure and retry with a smaller limit.
If we guess too small, we'll just break the string into more pieces than we strictly needed to. The basic calculation is just 32k pixels divided by the font max-advance, but we need to be a bit careful to avoid math errors. -
Inappropriate?Sorry, I repeated the info about the platform. I'm old and retarded.
-
Inappropriate?I just wanna see if this happens in a new profile too. Can you create a new profile (info at link) and see if it still does this?
-
Inappropriate?I have the same question. Happens on both my Macbook Pro AND my PowerPC G5. I'm using Firefox version 3.0.10.

Inappropriate?Good luck, Danielle
I tried to create a different user profile per Thomas' (see above) instructions using Mac Terminal. Unfortunately I seem to have a problem with Terminal: The command window opens every time as a tiny window that I have been unable to expand so that it could be used.

At that point I basically walked away from the problem. My hope is this is just a Firefox bug that will be solved with an update. The problem continues to show an inconsistent pattern: Some links now work while others do not. Generally I love Firefox. This is very disappointing. I can keep Safari running and cut-n-paste url's when needed. Clumsy, but better than nothing. -
You might want to contact Apple about that Terminal problem, that's not a good thing. -
Inappropriate? Thanks, Thomas. My Macbook's been a workhorse for nearly 3 years. Maybe time for a visit to the local Mac Authorized Service for a check-up.
-
Inappropriate?i don't know if this is still a problem for you, but i had same issue and simply deleted the firefox preferences file in the library folder and now it works fine
-
Thanks, docorona. The update to Firefox 3.5.3 solved the problem. Glad to hear I wasn't alone! -
Inappropriate?i still had the problem, even with the latest firefox too.... just delete the preferences file and it should work fine... it did for me...
-
Inappropriate?I tried that. And fresh install. Firefox is crashing at its own homepage. And any mozilla.com site is currently crashing my browser on MacBook Pro OS 10.4 FF 3.5
