Getting company and/or developer involvement for the Getsatisfaction, Thunderbird group
I have been to the mozilla.org product pages. I have been to their wiki. I have visited their developer resource pages. I viewed the Thunderbird bugfix discussions on bugzilla.
Only the bugzilla site shows lots of activity with regard to Thunderbird. But (understandably) it's a lot of developers exchanging notes about bugs and fixes - no mortal users, that I could see anyway. What was kinda funny was that the mozilla wiki's mission and roadmap page for Thunderbird was totally blank(!)
So it does seem like THIS is the only space right now where us ordinary users can ask questions and share solutions or ideas in a flexible, unstructured way. Problem is, we're all alone over here and mozilla is NOT hearing any of this.
I have an idea though: the Thunderbird discussion page on bugzilla has the emails of all the developers. If mozilla isn't officially here yet, why don't we invite all those developers to getsatisfaction and to this Thunderbird group? They're the guys who will be building add-ons and extensions for Thunderbird anyway!
I have no idea how this is all going to pan out, but wish me luck!

Inappropriate?Okay! I joined a "Thunderbird Users" group on Facebook and I posted the following in the discussions section of that site...
Topic: A better way to bring our needs/wants to Mozilla
Hello fellow Thunderbird (TB) users! I have been looking for a good place to discuss TB not just with other users but with Mozilla as well and with all the developers of add-ons for mozilla products.
I believe Thunderbird has the potential to become an "Outlook-killer" and I have several ideas I want to share about how that might be achieved. I'm sure you all do as well! But to achieve this, we users have to BE ENGAGED BY AND WITH the developer community behind TB.
I have been to the mozilla.org product pages. I have been to their wiki. I have visited their developer resource pages. I viewed the Thunderbird bugfix discussions on bugzilla. I'm sorry to say we users are not really heard in any of these fora.
Most recently I came to this facebook group. But facebook is not really the ideal place for free-wheeling, flexible discussions about product improvements. I think the size of this group and its level of activity attests to that fact.
So I want you all to know that there is a TB product discussion group on Getsatisfaction (http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla/pr...) which I'd like you all to check out. Now this group isn't endorsed or listened to by Mozilla YET. But on Getsatisfaction it will be much easier than here on facebook to make a lot noise about TB; enough noise that at some point Mozilla will find it in their best interest to come over and start engaging us there.
Okay, 'nuf said. Thanks and hope to see some of you on Getsatisfaction!
I’m tired but happy

Inappropriate? Thanks ktoth04! Actually, if we could get some add-on or extension developers over here, that would be a great start since I believe TB was designed to be improved primarily this way, rather than via version roll-outs.
Could I ask you to please mention the top items you might have in a "wishlist" for new TB features? I'd like to have some ideas already floating around in here, in case any developers do drop by. My pet peeve is how to integrate tasks more tightly and I still need to break that out into a list of component features.
Thanks for following!

Inappropriate?I wish it was gmail? Honestly I only use it for work because I have to. I hate the way Junk is implemented, I click it by accident all the time and then have to go looking for my message. It would be cool to have tags instead of folders, and when I create a new filter, I should be able to run it easily, instead of having to go to a different dialog to do so.

Inappropriate?Rene: Way to take the initiative. I have also sent some requests to Mozilla folks in the past to join us, but they haven't done so yet. But, I am confident they will.
To keep that invitation momentum going, I also have now done just what you suggest: contacted those developers on Bugzilla who are from Mozilla. Here's hoping they join us. Thunderbird has so much potential, and I think this could be a really valuable way for them to get product feedback.
I'll also keep trying to reach other people in their organization.
I’m loving your initiative!

Inappropriate?Hi folks.
I'm curious to learn more about this site. In the meantime, the best place to get help for Thunderbird is probably the MozillaZine forums, where lots of people are happy to help. See http://forums.mozillazine.org/index.p... for details.
Thanks!

Inappropriate?David: We're always available to help get the word out about Get Satisfaction. So, call on us if you want us to demonstrate it or explain why it might be a better solution than traditional forums. Feel free to contact me offline if you like at eric [at] getsatisfaction [dot] com.
I’m glad you're here

Inappropriate?Hi Eric! Thanks very much for doing that emailing. It's nice to have others pulling along side!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate? No, thank you! Your suggestion was a great one, which really demonstrates the ingenuity that we often see from Get Satisfaction users.

Inappropriate?(originally a comment to David's post, but it didn't come out right)
Whoah! This is MAJOR! Thanks very, very much David for joining in on this discussion!
I visited the mozillazine forums you mentioned and there really are a lot of Thunderbird (TB) posts there, specially in the thread Ideas For TB Extensions. Thanks much for this.
I fully respect your wanting to "learn more about this site" and I really hope you find this a good place to home your discussions about building-out TB more and more. I'm very conscious about not letting this be "just another site to monitor" for you guys (Mozilla and the developer community), so pardon me while I shamelessly promote getsatisfaction (GS) to you!
1. I think the GS discussion structure (the pages that display threads like this one and how they're linked to a personal dashboard system) makes for more interaction and "inclusion" between group members. In contrast, reading threads in a traditional forum structure feels a little like eavesdropping on the 1-to-1 conversations of others
2. You've probably already noticed that GS kinda feels like a social site too. I think this feeling makes it very acessible and therefore easier and more fun for users of a product (as opposed to developers) to just jump in and start contributing. It also makes discussions feel more like engaging conversations between real people.
3. I don't know whether it'd be a welcome thing among developers, but I think on a place like GS you could build up a strong "support group" for an idea or a direction, which could help make more things happen more quickly to get that idea done.
4. If you're looking for ways that GS could help you better manage all the inputs from the members, or exert a little more "guidance" on the way the group in general moves forward, GS have announced a number of company-oriented tools to do that sort of thing. Hopefully these may be very useful to you.
No pressure ;-D ! Whichever way you decide to use this GS group within your overall TB development plans is fine with us. I would however request that, whatever you decide, if you could let us know what role it is you do want us to play.
Again, thanks so much for being here! -
Thanks Eric, for taking down that erroneous post-become-comment! ("j)
