I can't kill firefox ! (3rc3 - WinXP)
It is really really annoying to have to reboot my entire computer just to restart firefox !
When I try to kill it, it just tells me : unauthorized access........
It seams that deep monitor can kill it, but it is frustrating to have to resort to a third party utility just to be able to use correctly one of my favorite applications.
The more people who report this problem, the more it gets noticed.

Inappropriate?I'm not sure why this would be happening, but you could start with http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/B... and see if those steps eliminate the problem. As far as I know, Firefox shouldn't be running with any kind of special privileges in Windows that would prevent it from being killed, although a misbehaved plugin or extension might cause such behavior.
Hopefully this helps, if not, please let us know and we'll try to help you narrow the problem down. -
Inappropriate?does this still happen in Firefox 3.0?
-
Inappropriate? This problem i encountered in 3.0.1 too. It does not allow me to end the process and neither does it report that it cant. It just stays there no matter how many times i do a kill process in task manager.
I did a clean reinstall too as given in the above link. Mozilla was one of my most liked browser and i have recommended it to many but now i myself have problems with it.
I use
Lenovo Thinkpad R61 RAM 2GB Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 2.0 GHz
Windows Vista Home Basic Edition - 32 bit - SP1
Mozilla 3.0.1 clean reinstall as illustrated.
No additional plugins installed apart from what comes with the Mozilla as downloaded from the Mozilla.com
Please help me get this problem resolved as soon as possible.
I’m frustrated

I have had this issue with apps that weren't from Mozilla, so I wouldn't say for certain it was a mozilla problem. And it too happened on Vista -
Inappropriate? Is it bug 446677? Even if it isn't, information might be nice. See also bug 430411.

Hi Thomas, Thanks for your quick reply.. It seems like tis bug 446677 but reverting to 3.0.0 or even earlier versions does not help. It all started after i installed ver 3.0.0 first. It does not take up 100% CPU for sure. And the steps to re create this is simple.
Launch FF3.0.0 or higher.
browse some slow website or youttube
while its halfway loading the webpage do a reload of the webpage and at the bottom corner it shows "stopped" and page stops loading. And cant kill the process in the Task manager. Worse is in 3.0.0 it allows to open multiple firefox processes and hence all the hung preocesses remain as hung in Task Manager. But in 3.0.1 it does not allow to open a new FF window if the previous process was not killed. Hence Restart is the only solution for 3.0.1. -
Manu: You've got steps for reproduction? That's great! Please post them in a step by step order in the bug so that others may test and see if they get the same results, repro instructions are very useful. The current repro instructions, "run firefox", are not. Thanks! -
Done! :) Hope to get some solutions -
Inappropriate? When I use FF3 it locks up. Varies after I start from 5 to 15 minutes. Right now I am using FF3 and IE if FF3 locksup. I have not tried going back to FF2. I have tried uninstalling FF3 and reinstalling from a new download of FF3 but still get the same lockup.
Locks up=I can't go to another website, FF says the page is loading but never loads. I close FF and try to reopen but I get a dialog box that says that FF is already running. I CTRL-ALT-DEL to get tasks and stop FF but I get no response. So I try to shut windows down but nothing happens. I have manually power off the computer.
I am using Vista. FF3.0.1
Was using FF2 before wo problem -
Are you using any extensions? If you start firefox in safe mode (it's another shortcut in the programs menu for Mozilla Firefox), does it still act like this? If so, you should comment in the bug 446677 that I linked above. -
Hello Thomas, what do you mean by extensions, i am a novice.. but for sure i dint introduce any add-ons to my FF. Infact after i installed FF the first thing i did was to test for this bug and it happened and hence i am sure it not because of any external or 3rd party SW. or so. -
If you used Firefox before, a profile already exists, and it could have problems that are only seen in normal mode (not in safe mode), that's why I ask for it to be tested in the clean safe mode environment. This isn't windows safe mode, just Firefox safe mode. -
Oh ya Thomas, i did this test immediately after i did a clean install as per instructions in the link http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/B.... So again effect of old profile is eliminated i believe. -
Inappropriate?Problem solved when i did a clean reinstall of FF 2.0.0.11 the most and the only stable version of FF. I am happy and not going to upgrade ever to further versions huh!!!!!!!!!!
My clean reinstall was cleanest i can say. I uninstalled mozilla and made sure there is no trace of FF ever in my computer. I used 3 registry cleaners after that. Deleted even the profiles and stuff. Did a new install of FF 2.0.0.11.
I’m happy to be back

2.0.0.16 is barely different, it only has security fixes. Also, you're claiming 2.0.0.11 fixed your problems, when in fact it's because you fully deleted your profile. It's like taking medicine and also getting kicked in the face, and claiming the kick in the face is what cured your ills. -
Inappropriate?Hey i dint say 2.0.0.16 was the cause infact while i m typing i have already upgraded to 2.0.0.16 from .11. I am concerned about 3.0 and higher with vista. I am a fan of Mozilla!!! Moreover i did a clean reinstall for all versions of 3 and then next one(beta i think 3.0.1?? whichever) except for 2.0.0.11 and a clean reinstall of .11 was what helped me. Anyways i dont have anything to do by commenting, thought that it wud just help letting you guys know the issue.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I had the same problem with 2.0.0.11 after doing a full re-install of my system about a week ago. I upgraded to 2.0.0.16 hoping it would help, but no such luck. These processes can't be killed with either Task Killer or Process Explorer, either. The only cure I've found so far is re-booting.
