Why can't I install an add-on for all profiles?
How can I install an add-on to be used for all profiles in Firefox under Ubuntu?

Inappropriate?Does that apply to Ubuntu too and not only Windows XP? If so, how can I download the xpi file if the installer is always called?
Either way, I should make the suggestion that this would be simplified and any user could just by clicking the link of the add-on select the option of installing globally.
Thank you very much.

Inappropriate?You changed your post!
Sorry, but I have gone to that page dozens of times and the information is not there. I am talking about Ubuntu and not Windows XP. Not only does that only apply to Windows XP, but also I think is a rather complicated solution - one should be able to just click to install globally after clicking the link of the add-on. Maybe I should have put this as an idea (new feature suggestion) and not as a question...
Thank you very much.
I guess you're thinking of how it used to be in Seamonkey, where it would ask if you wanted to install the extension locally or globally? I can tell you now, if you made a RFE for that, it would get marked WONTFIX because of how few people would understand what it means (and that very few would choose global).
Also, you can usually right click and save link as to save the extension, if not on addons.mozilla.org, on the developers site. -
Inappropriate?I don't know Seamonkey, but the two options: locally or globally would be fine. "install on all profiles/this profile" would be OK as well.
That very few would choose global? I'm no one?
Come on... At least there should be a checkbox on the preferences to set the display of the two options of installation of the add-ons on.
I’m surprised

Inappropriate? Not to offend, but while you are a unique snowflake, you are not a large enough group for this option to weigh heavily on the list of future enhancements. The vast majority of people don't use multiple profiles or multiple users. We actually moved extensions FROM being global into the profile directory on purpose a while ago. I doubt this will be undone, and I doubt even a pref will be introduced for this. I can off the top of my head think of several valid development arguments why this would be undesirable and a headache to maintain.(checking if other profiles have the xt first, privacy issues, managing extensions across profiles if one user doesn't want it anymore, etc). Sorry.

Why did you end with this reply and never answered my last reply? -
Patches welcome. -
What do you mean by "Patches welcome."? -
"The vast majority of people don't use multiple profiles or multiple users" , agree people don't have multiple profiles but multiple people do use the same machine. Global install for addons not a bad idea, ie every one get's access to say calendar (lighting?). If I have a new user starts, I don't want to have to add the usefull addons to his profile, should be just there. -
Inappropriate?I have an idea:
What if the user would simply just install the add-on, but could then have a tool in the preferences like this?:
A window with the add-ons' folders with the hability to drag-and-drop an add-on from a folder to another (between both main add-ons' folder - which is used by all profiles - and each profiles' folders).
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Since I didn't get any other replies meanwhile, I would like to use an example to show how I think my idea is very useful: We (5 -> parents + me and my brothers) only use one user (either in Windows or Ubuntu) to make it simple, faster and incite people to have a clean desktop - under the user folder, we have separated folders for the documents of each one of us, of course.
Then, we have Firefox profiles, so that each one has his/her own bookmarks. So, foxmarks is an add-on that is installed once for each profile. However, we would like to have Adblock Plus installed globally, so that
1.only one installation is required of it in each PC/OS - and there are many combinations of these, because of different interests of each one of us,
2.we don't need to have this same add-on installed 5 times and thus occupying 5 times what is required and
3.the same goes for the updates of the Adblock Plus list we use.
I’m disappointed

Inappropriate? Please read http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla/to... for further information. The Mozilla Firefox KB info for global installation is not working. I would also like to know if the two available options for global installation should work the same way both for Windows and Ubuntu.
Thank you very much.
I’m confident
