Why does firefox have to reload all my tabs every time it restores a session?
I love the way Opera opens up all tabs from a previous session in a snap. Firefox on the other hand, insists that it reload entire pages for every tab. This used to happen mostly after a crash in earlier versions (3 & 3.5), but since the 3.5.1 update, it decides to reload each tab every time I start the browser. On a slow connection like the one I have at home, this means an insane amount of time before I can start getting anything done!
Question is, why doesn't it load the existing pages from the cache (I have tried increasing the cache by the way, to no effect) and let me decide when to refresh a page?

Inappropriate?The reason it reloads sites is because many fail to respond to a time check that they haven't changed their content, known as the "304 Not Modified" HTTP header, so Firefox retrieves the page expecting new content.
Firefox is unable to know how slow your connection is, or that you don't care about new content, so can't behave in the way you want automatically, but you can trigger it to load tabs from the cache by doing
File -> Work Offline
Before closing Firefox, and when you restart it, it will still think it's offline and only load tabs from the cache. I don't think toggling it back from Offline afterwards will trigger all the tabs to reload at once. -
Another reason can be that sites specifically send HTTP headers instructing the browser not to cache their pages or elements thereof, which means they were never in the cache to be restored in the first place. If you want Firefox to ignore that like Opera does (with the resulting privacy/security implications), install Better Cache.
Bug 450465 is filed to track all related bugs to do with restoring pages as accurately as possible. -
Inappropriate?Try either the Load Control extension, or Active Stop Button that enhances the stop button to stop all tabs with a right-click.

active stop button seems to be not working properly with 3.5.1 ui:
"Prevents "Customize" toolbars menu item to work.
FireFox 3.5.1 - Active Stop Button prevents "Customize" menu item from working.
No windows with buttons/spacers etc. is shown.
Please, fix it.

And instead of load control i recommend toolbar buttons , which helps customizing firefoxes ui a lot more... -
