How do I recover emails after a hard drive crash? I have the data.
I thought my hard drive was crashing and I was right. Before it crashed I got it totally backed up in two ways. First, I copied the files to CD. second before I reconfigured my hard drive, my recovery discs saved the hard drive to an external hard drive. How can I find my emails on the saved drive data?

Inappropriate? You can move your profile folder from your backup to your live install.

I have the same problem, my computer crashed, but we were able to extract the hard drive. I have started a new thunderbird (and firefox) on my new system. When I tried to follow the given directions, it completely erased my new firefox and did not bring the old one over. What gives? I want my emails and address books off the old computer! -
Inappropriate?I don't understand, you erased your Firefox profile when trying to move over your Thunderbird e-mails? I think you may have moved your backup profile to the wrong location.
-
Inappropriate? No, sorry, getting the two programs mixed up. I'm frustrated! :( It was thunderbird....when
I followed the instructions on the page you provided, it erased my new firefox profile, but did not bring the old one in. -
Yes, don't move your old profile for Thunderbird over your new Firefox profile. That won't work. -
Inappropriate?I didn't. I moved my old thunderbird to my new thunderbird and it didn't bring the emails or addresses. I was able to recover the profile on the new thunderbird, so have not lost those emails. But I still can't get the emails and addresses from the old thunderbird to the new one. I'm sorry, I'm not being clear, I'm very frustrated.
this is all thunderbird, remove any thoughts of firefox from the equation. -
Inappropriate?Ok, you had just mentioned Firefox in both your previous replies. I don't have a solution for you right now, since it's not replacing your new e-mails with your old e-mails (right?) and instead just removing all mails, correct? If it was replacing your e-mails, there are some ways to 'merge' the two sets of e-mail.

Inappropriate?Sorry, I am NOT terribly good at this kind of thing! (In case you couldn't tell.) What I did...made a new profile in the new thunderbird. Copied what I thought was the old profile from the old thunderbird. Started thunderbird and it completely re-initiated with none of the settings (from either new or old) and none of the emails from either.
Does that make sense? I'm guessing I'm not selecting the right files somehow, or taking too many???
Can you remote log in and do it? :):) -
No, for liability reasons. Sorry. -
Inappropriate?So what do I do???
-
Inappropriate?I'd suggest asking in irc.mozilla.org #thunderbird, a live IRC chat room. It may be a moment before you get a response, someone has to notice and respond, so don't be discouraged if you're not helped within 30 seconds.

They don't pay me, so I just google people's questions and try to help as best I can. I don't know how to help you beyond what I've already done. -
Inappropriate?ah, okay...well thanks anyway.
-
Inappropriate?Where did you get the files and where did you copy them to?
Many people make the mistake of copying files from c:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird etc instead of from c:\Documents and Settings\... etc but give us the full list of folders, like c:\Documents and Settings\(your username)\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\sssjsjkld.default -
Inappropriate?Lordy, I think I love ya! :)
I was thinking yesterday that maybe the files weren't there. And they weren't. We didn't copy over that file to the external drive. Now, can I actually merge the old default with the new one or will I have to clean out my mailbox before starting the new default?
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Let me see if I understand what you're asking, basically you found the old mail now, but you have new mail that you've been getting in the new profile?
-
Inappropriate?Yes, that is correct.
-
Inappropriate?ok, that gets a bit complicated. Here's a link that explains the process of moving your old mail into a sub folder of Local Folders, after which you should be able to move the mail into the same inbox. http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtop...

Inappropriate? You rock, Lucy! I think I understand that and will try it when I get home from work today!
-
Inappropriate?Did it work?
