Inappropriate?I see this has still not been answered, so it must be a major BUG in Thunderbird, even though they seem to be blaming the windows firewall. If there was a good answer, shouldn't the solution be built right into the program and the error message corrected to tell you how to change the firewall settings?
I’m mad!

Inappropriate?Pasa's problem looks like it is going to be solved in the other thread pasa started (it looks like a problem with pasa's DSL ISP, at&t, blocking ports):

When I first installed Thunderbird, it worked perfectly. However,
after about 2 days, I get the following error message every time I
try to send a message:
"Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because
connecting to SMTP server smtp.att.yahoo.com failed. The server may
be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that
your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, or else contact
your network administrator."
The SMTP setting, including the port (465) are exactly the same as
that of my other computer with different email address. I have tried everything I
know to correct this problem, but nothing has worked. I have verified my
settings over and over again.

Inappropriate?OK, I learned today that it is usually not the firewall, especially if you already checked that and had made no changes. Rather, it is the IP address. Most of us have Dynamically Assigned IP addresses, and the MAIL SERVERS automatically block IP addresses that are abusing the system. So, we get a "bad luck of the draw", and our "IP" is BLOCKED!
We can use http://whatismyip.com to find out our present IP and then contact our mail provider and ask them to unblock our IP address, OR, we can contact our Internet Service Provider and have them release our present IP address so that a different one will be assigned.

Inappropriate?Hi All
I've recently upgraded to windows 7, and as yous probably know there is no outlook express so I tried thunderbird.
I managed to get emails but I couldn't send emails (smtp blocked)
But I now figured out that you need to add mozilla thunderbird to your firewall allowed programs list.
I can now send and receive emails.
Hope this helps!
