Inappropriate?Have you ever been able to send emails? If not, your smtp server is probably not configured properly.
It will help us to know exactly what happens when you try to send emails (do you get an error?), if this is a new problem, and which email provider you're trying to send emails with.
What happens sometimes is security software, like firewalls, will block port 25, which is the default port for sending mail. Some ISPs will only let you send mail using their smtp settings.
This article has some useful tips http://kb.mozillazine.org/Cannot_send...

The problem occured inside my provider's smtp server and was finally fixed by them. One learns new stuff every day. -
Inappropriate?I was having this exact problem and it is now resolved... Basically everything was working just fine. I could always send emails and receive them and then spontaneously it stopped working. I tried to solve it and nothing worked. Eventually I installed Outlook thinking it was a T-bird problem... it wasn't. It was happening on my new install of Outlook. I discovered the problem for me was that my ISP had changed my port number and had not informed me of this. So while I sat on hold with my hosting company. Lunar Pages, the recorded greeting listed possible issues and explained that if you were having this problem you need to change your port number. I did and AbraCadabra - it works again! So try and get a new port # from your ISP - and make sure it's the right one. Hope that it's this simple and it works for you too.
Cheers

Inappropriate?Like you, I can recieve (IMAP) but not send (SMTP) on my college account. The problem arose after they (at the college) rebooted the firewall. I've called them ( I can't get into campus...) They claim they made no changes and we tested it with all the ports open to all traffic - or so they said. I'm not sure it's particular to thunderbird, as I can't telnet in either. However, I can send email via webmail (the college is using m$ 2007 outlook :( )
I know this isn't a potential solution, but I wonder if some ms feature is fouling us both up

Inappropriate?hi deb:
Please read the earlier responses to this thread, sounds like most of the time it's:
1) your email provider changed the SMTP port OR
2) something else
So, please try to find out from your email provider the SMTP port and make sure Thunderbird is set to that port.
And if that doesn't work, please try the instructions that Lucy earlier pointed out at:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Cannot_send...
And if that doesn't work, please let us know your Thunderbird version (2.0.0.22?), operating system (Windows XP?) and as much details as you can gather.
I’m hopeful that this helps

Outlook user and suddenly lost ability to log in, turned to Thunderbird managed to log in but could not send tried the advice and it worked thanks. -
Yup! If you do call them, make sure you ask them for the port settings. -
SMTP does not come back to ask for PW, though I set the specs in TB for this. Tried changing port to 587, per Sympatico's instructions; This did not work.
Pegasus and Outlook can connect and send.

Inappropriate?i get it just fine after 13 days of tinkering. Its the wowway for sure. they don't discuss the ports and that all 3 settings protocols are set correctly.
inbox server settings: pop3.mail.wowway.com port: 110
Secure connect: Never
outbound settings: smtp.mail.wowway.com port: 587
secure connec: TLS, if available.
This was the hang up with sending email was the port setting. 25 was the default, but come one wowway didn't disclose it and told me it was my email program.
Uhmm same thing if i used outlook cus you didnt tell me the port number!!
But here you go good. luck!!! OOHH and to force thunderbird to ask you for the password again: change the case of first letter of the user name field. Say ok on the prompt screen. The click on get mail, then it will ask you for the password again.

hi pete:
I marked this as solved because other people earlier in the topic have been able to solve their issues. if you are still having problems, please give us more detail information on your particular version of the problem:
Please tell us your mail service provider, OS (Windows XP/Vista, Mac OS X, Linux, etc), Thunderbird version, extensions you have installed, what you did, what happened and what you expected - The more information about your problem, the faster the community can help you. Guessing :-) takes too much valuable time. This link is a good general, not specific to GS and Thunderbird, overview of how to write up a good topic: http://www.gerv.net/hacking/how-to-as... -
Inappropriate? My problem remains, but I'm pretty confident that the cause is my stubborn/incompetent IT. Here's my data:
mail service provider: Emory and Henry College
OS: Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex
Thunderbird Version: 2.0.0.23
Extensions: Lightning and sync SW
Here are the facts of the case: In early July, emory and henry re-set the firewall. That's when the problem started. I cannot send email from my home. My IP is Bristol Optinet. I had been able to before. I am able to send email from inside the firewall (on campus..) and with other IPs. My IT team at EHC claims that the problem is that the dynamic is blocked but certainly not Bristol Optinet. I called my IP and they say that that rotates every seven days. Emory's IT claim that they opened all ports and I still couldn't send from my house with Optinet. I've tried a different wireless router at home, too.

OH, and I can send SMTP via my gmail account from my home. -
Agreed. If you can send email from Thunderbird on campus but can't send email from the same computer running Thunderbird off campus then it's a problem with your off campus ISP (Bristol Optinet) and/or your mail provider (EHC) and unfortunately although I feel your pain, I can't help further! -

Inappropriate?I am STILL unable to send email even after confirming all ports, security settings, and verifivation of accounts with AT&Tyahoo. I can receive emails off the server no problem, but "connecting to the smtp server" failed. I have had Thunderbird on this machine for approximately 6 months without any issues, this one started today after I had to reset my password with AT&T. Thunderbird asked for my new password, accepted it without problems, and then rejects any sent email. Is there anything that AT&T has changed that could effect this? Nothing seems to be correcting the issue.

ATT/Yahoo (apparently) doesn't officially support Thunderbird, but they do support POP which will work with Outllook Express, Apple's Mail App, Eudora, Thunderbird, etc i.e. any POP client.
Sorry to hear that you had to upgrade to static IPs to make your Thunderbird work with ATT Yahoo but that shouldn't have been required. Other people e.g. Tony Gleeson have got AT&T Yahoo working with Thunderbird without static IPs:

Inappropriate?Hi Brandon:
It's possible AT&T Yahoo may have changed an email setting without you or had a server outage which causes it to mysteriously stop and then start working. This has happened before and will happen again unfortunately.
Try the following and if it doesn't work, please start a new ATT Yahoo topic with the exact error message, your POP and SMTP settings, etc. because this topic is now far too long
1. Double check your settings:
http://www.att.com/esupport/article.j...
2. If you have an att.net email address, Try the following settings from:
http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/8...
namely:
AT&T Yahoo E-Mail Settings for @att.net customers:
1. Open your email client program - Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Thunderbird etc.
2. Locate the email account settings - In Outlook Express / Windows Mail - Tools / Accounts.
3. Enter the POP server
pop.att.yahoo.com
4. Enter the SMTP server
smtp.att.yahoo.com
5. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the
SMTP port to 465.
6. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the
POP3 port to 995.
7 Click OK.

Inappropriate?Up until two days ago sending email was not an issue. However now I cannot send via smtp (incoming is fine). I called BT my ISP as I suspected it may be BT changing something. BT have altered my smtp settings and told me that my domain address was not fully attached to the BT account! Still not working and BT now say that it is Thunderbird (they do not support) and that I can send from OE. But I am getting the same error from OE so still cannot send email. Any ideas?
I’m frustrated
-
Hi doeinda,
The best thing to do is probably to call back and have them get OE working, take good note of what they had to change to get it working. Then if you can't get TB working with those changes, or can't figure out how to make them, come back and let us know what they were and we'll see what we can do. -
Inappropriate? How has this problem been solved. I still have it. I don't see anywhere that the problem is solved - being able to send e-mail

Inappropriate? For the past few days my outgoing mail has been very erratic. I am getting mail just fine. But when I send messages, it looks like they are sent, no error messages and they show in my sent box. But later I find out no one is getting my email. Every so often my mail will get through, but more times than not, the mail does not get delivered.
I called Comcast and they said they don't support Thunderbird, so I set up Windows Mail to see if that would work. Got the same issues. I get mail, but cannot send mail . . . most of the time.
Then I tried sending mail from my wireless laptop using Thunderbird, same settings as on my desktop system and the mail gets sent!
I have double checked all my settings and ports - they all are good (587 outgoing, 110 incoming). I really love my Thunderbird and rely on it as much as my main programs. Where should I go from here?
Is it my computer? Is it the software? Is it . . . VISTA?? Any help is so appreciated!

Inappropriate?OK guys. After pulling out the rest of my hair, (nearly), I have been having the same problem. .. .not being able to send emails. After going to my inet provider, Windstream.net, port 25 was OK. I could receive on port 110, but not send on port 25. So, the stupid program kept asking for my password, again and again. OK smarty, I said......I went to 'tools', acct settings, outgoing server, edit, and unchecked the box 'use name and password', went down and made sure the dot was in the "no" section of 'use secure connection'. .. .Walla. .. ..I was able to send emails.
Now, I don't know if this works for you, but you might try it. I was almost to the point of using a blowtorch. Good Luck!. .. ..

Inappropriate?I am having the same problem and cannot get help resolving. I can't even post a request on this site because the "post" tab doesn't work. This is my problem:
I changed my password on ATT/Yahoo and in Thunderbird. I can download messages but can't send. When sending, I get the following message: "The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smtp.att.yahoo.com failed. Verify your SMTP server setting is correct." I've read all the knowledge base q&A. I have confirmed with ATT that my settings incoming and outgoing are correct. I had this problem before and ATT was able to resolve it...but apparently they can't (or won't)now. I can't even pay for a resolution. Can anyone help? Inappropriate?Mine works fine in the USA, but it won't send when out of the country. Any ideas???
-
Inappropriate?I certainly have not found a solution to this problem yet in spite of reading all the answers. Since mine worked perfectly on Windows-98, it is obviously not a DNS problem or an internet provider problem, nor a E-mail provider problem (in my case smtp.secureserver.net)
Thus there are only two things left:
1) the Windows Firewall in Windows-XP professional,
OR
2) the "authentication" method used (or corresponding certificates....)
I told Windows Firewall today to have an "exception" for the "Thunderbird" program (using the internet communications link dialog box). And it still won't send.
Therefore, I don't know why the "problem" is marked "solved" when clearly the problem is not solved for so many people under so many conditions, and no clear documentation.
So, now I need to see if I can set an alternate "authentication" mode since clearly the authentication worked in Windows-98 but the new fancy "authentication" that is default in Windows-XP is not being accepted by my provider. And changing to SSL didn't fix anything either.
I’m more than frustrated and angry

Pasa: I have the same TB problem on a Mac. -
Inappropriate?no ho vista
-
Inappropriate?I tried Vista since I bought a Vista machine for software compatibility back in May, still in the box until last week. It wouldn't work for me. I couldn't install my existing drives due to the mother board change from IDE to SATA. I couldn't run 80% of my existing important software due to the 64 bit processor not understanding 16 bit code. And 90% of my peripherals and hardware (plotters, printers, embossers, scanners, digitizers,...) would not run as they use 16 bit drivers and no 32 bit drivers are available.
Not to mention, Vista's DOS mode cannot go to full screen, and there is no "filmstrip" mode for quickly correcting a batch of photos from the keyboard.
Windows-XP is a good compromise for my situation, but I really need a solution for getting the authentication accepted on the smtpout.secureserver.net outgoing mail server. I know it is not the provider's problem as it works fine on Windows-98.
Besides, I tried Thunderbird on the Vista system and had exactly the same problem.
And remember, the 64 bit Vista is not the same as the 32 bit Vista, thus causing even more confusion.
I’m unhappy
-
Inappropriate?Apparently my problem was not an "authentication" issue, but the outgoing mail server was blocking my "IP" address, which is dynamically assigned. My Internet Service Provider (ISP) released my IP address, so I was assigned a new one. and that resolved the issue, at least for the present.
-
Inappropriate?Pasa,
Can you tell me what you mean when you say your ISP 'released' your IP address. I believe I have the same problem - and probably solution - but the server I'm failing to access is run by less than gold medal IT staff. The folks at my ISP seem a little better. If I could work with them to resolve the problem that would be great! -
Inappropriate?Since I told my ISP that I was having trouble connecting to the godaddy mail server, they tried to access it (both with a "ping" and the TELNET command), and had no trouble, so since my IP address is "dynamically assigned", they just sent the command to release the IP address, which meant that a new address was dynamically assigned. I don't know exactly how they did it. I did read that one might even be able to release the address oneself using a DOS command, and that a new one could then be assigned, and that sometimes leaving the modem disconnected overnight or an extended period of time would allow a new address to be assigned.
Before they released my IP address, they had me try a DOS command:
TELNET smtpout.secureserver.net 80
(the first argument was the server name, the second the port to be used).
It stated "connecting", then just gave me a blank screen. That meant I didn't have access to the server and that the server had blocked my IP address.
If it had connected, it should have a line with 220 with an extended server name, and allowed typing to the server...
-
Inappropriate?John Iskra:
More info on dynamically assigned IP addresses aka "Dynamic DNS"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_DNS
The DOS commands for Windows XP (don't know what it is for Vista or Windows 7 but my bet it is the same!) to release an IP address and get a new IP address are:
1. ipconfig /release
2. ipconfig /renew
For Linux I believe the command is ifconfig (there may also be a fancy control panel to do this like the Mac has)
However there is no guarantee this will give you a new IP address. you could do this 100 times and not get a new IP address. If you can't get a new IP address, I would contact your ISP like pasa did.

Inappropriate?I was WRONG! My DSL IP is still blocked from accessing the outgoing mail server. My Dial Up IP address works FINE! I contacted GoDaddy regarding their blocking my IP address. They state they are not doing it, so obviously the block is somewhere else. It appears in my case to be at AT&T, even though they are not my ISP (internet service provider) but just a "middle man" that provides the wire and router and IP numbers.
In the meantime, I'm running all outgoing mail through some of my other mail account mail servers. For example, I have a Gmail account, and that mail server is working fine; and I have a mail account with my Internet Service Provider, and that mail server is working fine. Unless they look at the file header, they don't know. My E-mail address is listed as if it went through the GoDaddy server and those specific mail accounts.
I’m sad

who is your ISP? Is it a DSL service? I still have sporadic send problems on sympatico. -
Inappropriate? My ISP is Shaw Cable. No DSL for me.
I've tried to change the outgoing port, and no dice.
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?Even if your main account is from a work server, or cable, or whatever, if the server you are connecting to blocks the mail (as does mine through my ISP for ANY connection to the Godaddy outgoing mail server via DSL), you can create an account through another mail provider (and server), such as Gmail.com I can use the Gmail.com mail server for outgoing mail, and still indicate my Email address through Thunderbird as the one that they normally send to (the one that is blocked on outgoing but not incoming...) Unless the look at the file headers to see how mail was routed, most people have no clue and really don't care. It doesn't cost anything to get a free Email account with Gmail (or hotmail, or yahoo, or netzero, or any other number of free Email accounts), so you can use one of those until you get the blocking (or port number...) or whatever resolved with your ISP (internet service provider), and your Mail provider (assuming they might be different as in my case). Actually, I'm routing most of the outgoing Godaddy E-mail through the mail account and mail server provided by my ISP presently, and only use the Gmail one as backup.
-
Inappropriate?I am using Gmail, and it's not making a difference.
ISP - Shaw

Inappropriate?For GMAIL:
incoming server:
pop.server.com port 995
(YES, I said 995; it is not "standard", but that is what they use!)
outgoing server:
pop.server.com port 465 SSL
(YES, I said SSL; if that is not on, it won't work. 465 is standard for SSL
and YES, I said pop.server.com for the outgoing!)
I've been using the Gmail for sometime with these settings with no problems.
Change your outgoing server to pop.server.com and you should have no problems sending out.

please give the instructions for changing the IPSec service to manual. This may resolve my problem too.
Tom, you may want to check your user name again. Many of them require name@domain.com ... instead of just name. Or try it both ways...
But I'm still blocked on outgoing by my ISP, so you maybe too.
If you can't send through the mail server you want to send through, you might set up another E-mail account from another mail server, and send through that. I can send out through Gmail and can list my sender E-mail address as the address for the server that I can receive through but can't send out on... most people won't know I routed the mail through a different server.
I’m concerned, but hopeful about work-arounds

Inappropriate?I haven't been able to send email from thunderbird for about a week. I've read through the thread and changed the ports, renewed IP, and still nothing. My ISP, Verizon FIOS, ensures me its not a problem on their end. What do I do, I don't wanna use Outlook! I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 and my OS is Windowns XP.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?April, you might try doing a test from Outlook just to rule out that it is not Thunderbird or Thunderbird settings causing the problems. I tried Outlook and still can't send out through the blocked accounts.
You also might try setting up a free GMAIL account, and seeing if you can send through the Gmail server. (I can). And if you can't get your normal outgoing E-mail fixed, you at least could hopefully send through the Gmail server without anyone really knowing. (You keep your regular E-mail address for all outgoing mail you write, so most people don't see the "routing". Some spam programs may think your message is spam if sent through a different server than the E-mail address, but I've had only one person complain about that so far).
Also, post what port and security settings you are using for outgoing mail, and maybe someone else using Verizon will recognize an issue.
And I think there was another thread dealing with a Verizon outgoing mail problem that was resolved. -

I am not from Mozilla; I just have been using Netscape for over a decade, and don't feel like switching, but needed the multiple accounts the newer Mozilla version allows, plus the ability to put an @ in a User name, required by some of my E-mail providers, but not supported by Netscape.
But I don't think your issue is Thunderbird; I think it is either settings that have changed, or something different with your connection or provider. It wouldn't hurt to do a test with Outlook. If you can send with Outlook, at least you would know that you know the right ports, the right security setting, and that the providers are not blocking your IP nor your E-mail server. If it doesn't work with Outlook, you know that you either have a wrong setting that needs to be clarified, or that someone is blocking you, or that you have wrong settings on your Firewall or other windows security that is blocking you.
And as I suggested for April, if you still can't send with your normal outgoing mail server, you could set up a free account with Gmail and send out through their server.
You might also want to check if you already have multiple outgoing accounts and have selected the wrong one accidentally, since you say it used to work fine. -

Inappropriate?Tom - yes pasa is correct double check your username is correct
If you are still having problems, please create a new support topic with the info requested in our README especialy your outgoing username (change it slightly for privacy reasons e.g. change tom@att.com to tommy@att.com). So far all AT&T problems have been due to AT&T or Thunderbird settings issues. e.g. using userid%att.com instead of userid@att.com, firewall issues, users IP addresses being blocked by AT&T, router issues that were solved by AT&T, AT&T resetting the outgoing email password, changing IPSec service from automatic to manual., etc
Bernard Pauksta:
please create a new support topic with the info requested in our README
Kay: as pasa requested:
Please give the instructions for changing the IPSec service to manual. This may resolve Pasa's and others problems
precious if the problem indeed "rights itself" then it's not a thunderbird issue. however we'd still love to help. if you can't fix it
please create a new support topic with the info requested in our README (what you did, full settings, userid, etc)
JOYCE TARNOW glad you got it working, i will paste your settings into the other thread where you described your problem. Again another case of mail provider support inadvertently (or through the left hand not knowing the right hand) giving people the wrong Thunderbird settings.
Shenshen - You have a different problem with a different ISP, i.e. Shaw:
please create a new support topic with the info requested in our README (what you did, full settings, userid, etc) - My guess is that Shaw is blocking you somehow or that your settings are incorrect.
April - You have a different problem with a different ISP, i.e. Verizon FIOS:
you should be using port 587 for outgoing email, perhaps this will help: http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialH...
If that doesn't help please create a new support topic with the info requested in our README (what you did, full settings, userid, etc) -
I’m happy

Inappropriate?I'm still wondering how to change IPSec service from automatic to manual...
Can someone please post the steps for me to try? -
Inappropriate?I just found how to set IPsec services to manual; but it didn't help. I'm still blocked from GoDaddy's server, and GoDaddy still states it is not their problem, and my ISP still states it is not their fault either...
I set IPsec to manual by:
windows start key
programs
administrative tools
services
standard tab
scroll down to IPsec services
right-click on it
properties
startup type
manual
close the services program
I also rebooted, and the IPsec services was not started. (Before rebooting it was still running).
All the other mail and internet services seem to be working fine with IPsec services not running; but I still cannot access smtpout.secureserver.net mail server. But it still works fine with dial-up.
And I can manually start the IPsec services with the services program, but it still doesn't help the mail still does not go out through the desired mail server using a DSL connection.

Inappropriate? My problem with sending e-mail with Thunderbird has been solved. It was not a problem with my firewall, but with one of my virusprotectors. I removed the Norton/Symantec protection. That solved the problem. My Avast antivirus gives no problems with sending e-mail with Thunderbird.
