I use Windows XP and just updated Thunderbird 2 to Thunderbird 3 and it asks me for the master password which I have never set so don't know it. I see others have had the same problem and it's marked as solved but I've tried using the error consul but that didn't get to the reset dialog box I was expecting to see.
Also after a while a new dialog box comes up in Thunderbird which says "Please enter the master password for the Software Security Device."
It's driving me nuts cause nothing seems to be working.

2Me too , Windows Vista. It can not even let me key in the password, program Not Responding at all !!!

David, 2 pcs , 2 situations
1.) PC 1 , winXP , download 3.01 and upgrade , no problem (Migration Assistant take time for first time runnig) -- eveyrthinkg ok.
2.) PC 2 , win Vista, update from Thunderbird->Check for update , for sure is 3.0 but not 3.01. First time pop up master password, after key3.db deleted, no master password error. Coz of key3.db deleted, and reinstall 3.01 download from the net. 3.01 ask to enter all the mailbox password again. I canceled all. During the "Determining a message as Index....." (migration job) 3.01 crashed. Not Responding. Tried many many times, still the same !!!
now for PC 2, downgrade back to 2.0.
any solution ??? -

Hi Daivd, I found that migration assistant create SMART FOLDER in the mail folder half way only ,crashed. while i try the second time, migration assistant create another folder called "smart folder -1". Does it related to WinVista system folder structure issue ??
When i try to open up Thunderbird folder from the Win Explorer, by right the path shld be like C:\Document Data\username\Application Data\Thunderbird\xxxxxxx\Mail, but i can't.
The correct path in WinVista should be C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\xxxxxxxx\Mail
Do you get what i means ? -

I found that during the migration job is running , half way only 3.01 crashed.
Is it related to WinVista folder structure ?
Mail path should be C:\Document Data\username\Application Data\Thunderbird\xxxxx\Mail
but in winVista , the correct path is C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Mail.

I have this problem too. If I put in my ISP password it lets me use mail. but I have to put it in each time I use Thunderbird.
