There's no way to hide read messages, however every time the system performs a re-ranking (currently once an hour), the read messages are ranked low so that they will disappear from your top messages list.
In the very near future, we'll place a 'refresh' button that will also perform re-ranking, thus immediately making read messages vanish from the top messages list.
