Is Roku a good Apple TV alternative?
The Roku sounds like a possible alternative for me, a Mac user who can't watch their online movies. Does anyone know how it compares to Apple TV?

Inappropriate? In my mind I would consider it a good compliment, rather than alternative. The AppleTV is great for the media you already have, but the Roku has a much bigger catalog of flicks than the AppleTV.

Inappropriate? It's really a comparison of *ahem* apples and oranges. The Roku Netflix Player is a dedicated 'rental' streaming device. That's it. The Apple TV and other like devices are capable of that (or similar) and more.
Taken for what it is, the Roku is well worth the cost if you can find a steady stream of selections from the slim pickings of the Watch Instantly feature.
I’m happy to recommend a product I'm thoroughly enjoying

Inappropriate?I agree with the previous comments. All of these players are really heading into new territory. It's going to be a while before we see a single device that allows you to ditch cable altogether. That said, the Roku player has delivered a lot of entertainment to me for a very small price. I have no hesitations in recommending it.

Inappropriate? We've actually ditched cable -- or DirecTV as it were -- altogether. I was dubious at first and I feel a bit like pioneers in the wild west but it is working for us -- most of the time. We can watch what we want but in general watch a lot less tv. Which has been a good thing.
We have a mac mini hooked up to our high def tv. We use Boxee as the interface for all the media we have downloaded on the Mac Mini and external drives as well as our Netflix on demand account. Then we have EyeTV hooked up to the Mac Mini to get free over-the-air high def network channels like all the major networks, PBS and a couple others. And sometimes we watch stuff via iTunes.
I miss my Tivo at times, but mostly it's been pretty good.
And when my dad comes to visit he gets to watch all the episodes of NCIS he can fit into a day via the CBS internet station on Boxee. :)
