Thumbs down on the redesign
I don't like the new redesign. The new graphs are too small.
I liked the fact that the graphs took up as much room as my monitor would allow... now everything is constrained.

Inappropriate? You'll always find some people who don't like a redesign but I feel the same way. The graphs are the raison d'être for the interface, I can't understand why you would make them so small and not allow them to resize with the browser window.
I’m disappointed

Inappropriate? Thanks for the feedback - sorry that we took a step backward for you.
The reason for the change was that our charting package does not support variable widths, and on Firefox 3 these charts were breaking horribly in many cases. So we had to go with a fixed site width to work with FF3. After tons (I mean tons) of internal debate, we decided to go with 1024 as the site width as it is by far the standard width for most sites that have a fixed width (for one of many examples, check out Apple.com).
We have kicked around the idea of allowing the user to specify another width in their preferences, such as 1280. This is on the backlog and we hope to have something out before too long.
I’m dealing with a charting package that doesn't like variable widths

Lew I appreciate you are having problems with FF3 but the idea of using fixed width for your site and the comparison to Apple.com somewhat baffles me.
Your site is all about providing easy access to information. Making a choice to use a fixed-width format works against that purpose.
I really wish you'd rethink this and, if necessary, either ditch your chart solution or FF3 support.
Surely there must be other charting packages that work? What about the open flash charts @ http://www.pullmonkey.com/projects/op... (assuming that's not what you use)? -
Inappropriate?Thanks for the reply Lew.
The redesign looks good for the most part -- again the issue I have is with how small the graphs are. I am looking forward to being able to bump the size back up, and will probably be first in line to do so :)
As far as the graphs go, I think it's important to realize that the graphs are the "main course" on the site and that they should be the most prominent thing on the page. Making them smaller does a disservice to the data, and IMO makes it harder to grasp what is going on in our system at a given moment... I am sure Edward Tufte would have something to say on the subject :)
BTW I'm on FF3, and have never seen the breakage... then again I'm on a 24" display, so obviously 1024 feels pretty small.
Eagerly awaiting the upgrade,
- Tony
I’m indifferent

Inappropriate?Thanks Tony, Matt.
Regarding FF3, over 65% of our site users are on FF 3 or 3.0.1. So taking out FF3 support is a nonstarter.
We can and should tweak the layout in the short term to devote as much space as we can to the charts. I agree - that's where the value is in RPM so we should make the most of it.
Switching charting packages is an option, but a nontrivial and expensive one and it would come at the expense of our building other features on our roadmap. It's not off the table but not likely to happen soon.
And yes, this feedback has definitely bumped the priority for increasing default resolution on a user-preference basis. Thanks for being vocal - it helps us build the features that matter for you. -
Thanks for taking another look at this. I await per-user resolution settings with interest ;-) -
Inappropriate?Hey guys,
Thanks for the feedback. We'll roll out a new design closer to the original stretchy layout very soon.

Inappropriate?Hi,
We've made an update to the site layout. In Safari, the layout stretches between 1024 and 1440px. All other browsers are fixed to a 1024 width. Thanks for all the feedback and please keep it coming.
-Saxon -
Yeah, make it stretch in Firefox and IE :) -
Inappropriate?Hi Tony,
We're stuck with a fixed width for IE and Firefox because of FusionCharts. Their graphs require a fixed width. Percentage widths expose a bug which they claim to be a browser bug. The bug is that if a graph is rendered off screen with a percentage width, the Flash plugin asks the browser for the size of the parent and it is given a value of 0. The chart then freaks out and renders all funky. We were running into the issue on a number of pages. The controllers page is a good example. When a controller in the slow controller is clicked, the graphs in the bottom right corner often rendered improperly because they were initially scrolled out of view.
Here's a snapshot of graphs that rendered incorrectly:

Safari behaves differently than FF and IE. If a graph is written to a page in an offscreen location, Safari waits to render the graph until it comes into view.
Thanks
-Saxon
