Milestones/Releases
I've seen milestones mentioned in a couple of threads. I like Sifter, but for my employer, not having milestones is probably a showstopper; we need the ability to group issues into the iterations in which they're being worked on. We could probably co-opt categories for this purpose in the short run, but it will be tough selling Sifter over here if milestones are not coming soon.
As for the implementation: I imagine that an additional field that functions much like category but has an associated date would suffice.
Nice product, thanks for your ear.

I just wanted to let everyone know that we released the first iteration of adding milestones to Sifter. There's still many more milestone-related enhancements we'd like to make in the coming weeks, but the core of the functionality is there.
We wanted to get it out and use it ourselves in production a little bit before deciding exactly what other enhancements made sense. The current feature is just the tip of the iceberg, but hopefully it helps alleviate some of the pain we've all been feeling.

I just wanted to let everyone know that milestones are literally in progress and almost ready for the initial release sometime this week. I've written a "blog post":http://nextupdate.com/blog/archives/2009/04/phased-ambitions/ giving a little more background.

Unfortunately, while milestones are one of my personal priorities, it will likely be a couple of months before we get to them. We're planning on focusing on some of the more foundational features like Search, Reply via Email, and an API first.
So, it's unlikely it will be anytime really soon, but it's something that is still very important to me personally.

Inappropriate?I don't really need "milestones" per say as dates and such don't matter but some way to group tickets together, other than categories would be nice. For now I'll probably just hack categories to work and happily wait for email and an API. :)
I’m happy

Inappropriate? On another thread about three weeks ago, Garrett said this was likely after the API. Any ETA yet?

We still don't have an ETA. We're juggling a lot and just doing our best to get to everything. It's unlikely we'll share any more detail beyond where it falls on our priority list. It's just too difficult to predict dates or timelines ahead of time. We really just release things when we feel they are ready instead of trying to fit in a timeline. The API is still the next major feature with milestones after that, but I have no idea when they will be live. -

Hi Garrett, the new milestones concept and iterative rollout is good and basic functionality will typically be sufficient. What you could consider is a customizable UI that, say allow some accounts to keep showing the Asignee and the Priority always (like it used to be) and only open additional entry fields for Milestones and all the other good stuff you will build in the future. Tom. -
Tom - Milestone and Category fields already do that to some degree. They're not displayed unless the project actually has categories or milestones. I assume you're talking about having them expanded and visible by default when there are only a couple of fields?
I've already started thinking about other options, and I like where you're headed with that thought, but I'm really hesitant to make the interface too dynamic based on too many different dependencies and scenarios.
If it turns out people really hate having the fields collapsed, I'd rather just leave them expanded by default even though they take up much more space that way. We'll see how some of the other options look. Thanks for sharing. This is the kind of stuff that helps make sure the next pass is even better.
