Character limits are for the birds!
I'm now a pretty heavy user of Ning, managing a group of about 500 people. I'm frustrated about the character limits in place all over Ning:
• 200 character limit on messages to attendees of an event (not nearly enough to relate a change in event details)
• 2000 character limit on broadcast messages (this is communication with membership and should not be limited)
• character limit on description of a Group. No indication that there is a limit, so when the description is displayed, it's truncated and there's no way to see the full text.
Please get rid of character limits everywhere, or make them something workable, like 5000.
These are issues hindering communication, which ostensibly is what Ning is all about!

Inappropriate?I couldn't agree more. Even if the character limits are put in place due to page load time (as in Analytics Box), I think we as Network Creators should be able to make our own decision on slow load times, versus features. And the character limit on messages (email and broadcast) is maddening. At the very least, if Ning has to implement these limitations due to bandwidth, load time issues, whatever the reasons, please give us 5000 characters!
Thanks,
Jen

this is one of the best points

Recently i started to use blogs or forum for broadcasting messages and click the SHARE button to send it to all the members inside my network, the cool thing about this is that we can discuss the matters that are posted in the newsletter and it really works...
Why not create a forumcategory and call it 'News letters' And after writing the newsletter click the Share button and send it to all your members?
This way you can illustrate your information with pictures and other stuff... -
Inappropriate? My gripe is about character limits w/in Tab Mgr ~ I know there was a work-around posted once before in the old Ning NCs Forum ~ would appreciate it if someone could re-post the fix here ~ thx in advance
I’m frustrated

Hi Janice, Have you tried this lately? The character limitations for the Tabs, have been modified. Here are the new limitations:
There is a limit of 14 top-level tabs and 24 characters per tab.
I think these are suitable for any tab link.
Thanks,
Jen

Thanks, Jen, I didn't continue trying but I will give it another shot -
Inappropriate? The character limits on Messaging between members can also stifle communication.
It just feels archaic when I have to send a second or third message on the same subject, just because I couldn't fit it all in the first message. Of course, I'm partially to blame for loving to write, but I think the char limit for messaging could be a little higher, if we even need one.
I’m patient

Then why not write a blog about the subject you want attention for and in your broadcast message give a brief introduction on the subject and point directly to it with pointing to the actual blogpost??? -
Oh, I wasn't referring to the 'broadcast message' feature, I was talking about private messaging between members, it wouldn't really make sense to create a blog post, just to talk to someone extensively on a subject. I suppose the only other alternative, would be something like a private discussion in the forum. I wouldn't be wholly against something like that, but I don't know how exactly that would work, it's possible it would resolve the issue.
The simplest thing to do, would be to eliminate the word limit on private messages, yes I can just send someone an email, where there are no character limits, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a social network in the first place?
This is just my own dilemma, I don't expect anyone to pay much attention to it, unless they've experienced the inconvenience themselves. -
Inappropriate?Gonna put in my vote again - - Ning Team, PLEASE rethink this limitation thing. Especially in Analytics Box and private messages.
Thanks,
Jen
I’m disappointed

Inappropriate? You do not need more than 2,000 characters in the analytics box!
The limit on emails, private messages and broadcast messages in my opinion is still to lenient.
Thanks to NC's spamming their members with email after email, most messages from our networks are now being forced into spam folders.
Stop sending messages and add the content to your site! -
Inappropriate? The limitations on broadcast emails and invite messages utilized by the administrators have to go or be increased substantially. What an inconvenience and a detractor from the quality of our communications! Anyone there??
