Please Put an End to the "Come Join Me On" Spam Invites!
My site is constantly under attack by ning nc's who join my site, add as many friends as possible and invite them to their site.
Even after I ban them, they still have access to the friends they generated on my site and continue to send spam invites to them MONTHS AFTER I BAN THEM.
This is completely rediculous and can easily be fixed. Just remove the invite from other networks option. Problem solved. Everyone complains about this and it's such a simple thing to fix!

Yes, to repeat Brian F, Ning will later this week remove the ability for members to invite cross network.

Inappropriate?ning should make in a global option for each user.
Allow people to invite me > NO -
I prefer the Ning option to be like this:
NC Control:
Allow members to invite members to other Ning networks: NO
Ning really needs to allow NCs to be in total control of the networks they work so hard to create, build, and maintain! I don't know why they refuse to do this. We've been asking for a couple years and this is my biggest area of frustration with Ning. -
Inappropriate?i disagree ....just put an end to it altogether...on premium networks at least..makes things more complicated if we had to explain to new members why they need to check a box to avoid spam

-
Agreed. Premium NCs should have the option of running independent from Ning.com and other social networks. -
Inappropriate?Yes, do away with it altogether, but I dont think its the Ning way. Since, they are moving towards that globalized model of the user logging into ning.com and seeing all their networks that they are signed up to and its part of that "extending beyond" the original Network the user signed up with. the NING ID being portable etc etc. So, my suggestion was a compromise, considering the way Ning is going with it. has anyone thought about it to that extent? or am I on a different wave length here?
-
Inappropriate?OK but then your suggesting that Ning decieved all of us. We didnt invest time and money into creating a "Group" for Ning.com.
They need to go back to being the platform and not the social network. -
Inappropriate? Are you an idiot Demon? pull your head out of the sand, Dont you know whats going on? Theres a big picture. All content belongs to Ning as is going into their master database. Have you not logged into ning.com and understand what is going on there? wake up.
-
Inappropriate? The solution to this major SPAM problem is simple:
Only allow members to 'Share' content with friends on the particular social network they are sending from. Not to all friends across Ning!
Isn't that the reason for being on a "niche" social network anyway? Why do you want to receive content from other "unrelated" social networks? The majority of the time it's just SPAM!
For the "Join me on" invites, (the biggest SPAM issue), you should only be able to send these out to specific e-mail addresses. Not to all friends across Ning! This will make it more difficult for vulture network creators to SPAM other social networks. They would actually need to provide a list of e-mails to send out network invitations.
Just my 2 cents. I doubt Ning cares what I have to say though.

Inappropriate?To add to this topic:
All of you NCs who have spent countless hours and thousands of dollars to build up your social networks...
Any one of your most active members (who have hundreds or thousands) of friends on your network can turn around and create a similar social network.... and GUESS WHAT?
They can start SPAMMING your members with invites to join their new competing social network.... Is this fair????????? NO!
What makes this even worse is that you can't do anything about it. You can ban this member from your site, but he can still continue to SPAM your members directly though his own network or Ning.com...
THIS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED!
I’m frustrated
-
Agree! -
Hi, that's the reason why i get no satisfaction with Ning since they closed the NC Forum. Where are the workers from Ning. What is with our suggestions. Can they give us a sign that they are reading these topics here? -
No one from Ning reads this, we are talking to a brick wall! -
Inappropriate?obviously not lol
-
Inappropriate?I am just reading this topic. I am paying for some premium services and sure for the remove the ning promotion links. I a welcome message i mentioned that my network is hosted on a social network provider called ning and I give them some tips to take care who will be their friends. more than this i changed the item for friends into contact/ connections just because of this mega spam issue. i can't be a friend on another ning network group without a new invitation to another network on ning. that's totally stupid and i am so strange that i have compose some profil questions which are very sensitive. if i see that someone just want sign up my network to add his website or add new contacts for his own network i don't want to accept these members. i think if someone sign up my network he has an involvement or a common aim and belongs to my virtual community. I know ning since july 2007 - in the beginning of ning it wasn't possible to invite friends/ contacts across other networks. yes, i agree pull that all content belongs to Ning.com - it is clear just because of the SUBDOMAIN ... but Ning can change the direction all the time. At the moment they are working for the fact that Ning.com is more the NETWORK than a company who offers a platform for a social network. And that is totally wrong. Then i do not need Ning. Mackenzie, do you read this here ... if Ning is becomes more and more the network we do not need Ning anymore because we can use facebook and myspace. What's the aim of your company Gina? To offer a platform for an unique open social network? Isn't it? With this practise that member can sign up a network and add new connections to invite them later to their network you can't say that a network is a network any longer. It is only a network group on Ning. And if someone invited someone if have to accept this invitation or this guy will send me daily maybe an invitation in his network. Ning had a fantastic concept but to realize an idea without the customers is contra productice. Where are you - Ning Team?
-
Jens, I have the same concern. If Ning starts focusing more on being a social network as opposed to a platform, we're all better off just using Facebook, LinkedIn, Myspace, etc. They are superior in functionality and you can get a lot more reach on there. That move would make Ning pretty much useless.
I definitely won't go quietly because I have invested a lot of time and money to building this community. -
Alex, sure ... for me it is the same. I am network creator since 2 years now. But there is one point: I am losing my fun without the NC community and that I shall purchase for a guaranteed support by Ning. I know Ning is company and I appreciate so much the customer connection by Ning in the beginning of Ning. Now ... Ning is a big and customer blind company and I am looking for some other options witout Ning if Ning decide to run their platform without us. -
Inappropriate?Folks your pleas fall on very deaf ears... If you want a solution to this issue you are gonna have to look elsewhere. Do you really need Gina to come on here to tell you that?
Save your blood pressure! Be on the look out for the next platform and share with the rest of us what you find. Me personally I am looking at Buddypress. -
Nope! not really ... I am just only romantic. -

Email verification on Ning.com
Posted by Athena von Oech on June 11, 2009 – 12:15 pm
We’re making a change tonight to the way people sign up and sign in to Ning.com. Whether you’re new to Ning.com or you’ve signed in before, you’ll be asked to verify that your email address is yours. This is a simple process of visiting Ning.com and then checking your email inbox and clicking the link in an email from us. We appreciate this is an extra step and have worked to ensure you just need to do this once.
We’ll be monitoring this closely and are exploring rolling it out to the entire platform in the future.
-
the email verification is only for ning.com not for all the networks. It is for the main social network. the groups which we the network creators belong don't have this yet.
why not just implement this to all networks? -
AT LAST! Woo hoo! Where can I opt my network in???? -
Inappropriate? What's the deal with the new Ning.com e-mail verification?
How is this going to effect our members who do not log in through Ning.com?? They log in directly through my domain URL and that's the way it should be!
Can anyone explain what's going on? No responses on the Ning blog.
I’m confused

Inappropriate? Will you all wise up already! When pressed for answers to questions like the one of the spam invites Gina (and other minions) has said several times something to the effect of... "We understand NING may not be the solution for everyone..." Blah blah blah , go sit on your hat !(basically). Why in the world do you think that now all of a sudden she or any of the others will change their tone??? What is the motivation? They are not getting a lot of bad press over NC unhappiness, quite the opposite! They have managed to make everyone in mainstream media believe they are they next social media revolution about to happen. They even have people like Arrington/TechCrunch in their back pocket by coming to speak at a couple of their events, so now even the tech journalistas have turned a deaf ear.
WE HAVE NO ALLIES OUT THERE! WE ARE ALL ALONE!
Folks give it a rest! It's over and done! The minute they made Ning.com a social network of it's own, the writing was on the wall! Instead of whining about the situation can we please focus on what we are going to do NEXT? That's the only way you are going to EVER make any kind of impact by bailing en mass!

I agree. I am bailing as soon as I am able. But I really LIKE whining in the mean time. :) -
Inappropriate? As Network Creators, our ultimate goal is to increase/maintain traffic on our networks. Users join and utilize our niche networks (as opposed to Facebook and MySpace) because they want to get involved on a specific topic. Why would they want to be receiving invites to join other unrelated networks?
This really hurts the user experience and causes breakage in e-mail communication when users eventually unsubscribe. They should only be receiving something from a friend if they are on the same social network!
Also, I feel like Ning makes users "jump through hoops" by forcing them to go to Ning.com to do certain things. Users should never have to leave my site to do anything. We work hard to keep them on our sites for you to start directing them elsewhere! We don't want them to go to Ning.com or a competing network. There needs to be a solution for all of this!

Inappropriate? Why does every one wont to try and change ning....Did you all not read the intier rouls befor joining....It IS a social network all tho to many have made there net work group for selling things...Quit being so lasy and just delete the invite...And be glad there is a ning to do what ever you do while being here ....If that is to much to ask for, then go some where else and pay out the butt to have it your way and you wont have to deal with this simple matter.......
-
Inappropriate?"Quit being so lasy and just delete the invite" ... I don't see that as the solution. Once a person is friended on through ning.com (any network) all one needs to do is return to the network they wish to grow and send out invitations. By deleting it on your own network, you simply reduce the ability for members to invite others to your own network.
I am beyond frustrated. I have several premium sites. I paid to remove Ning links, and deleted everything Ning related through Language Editor over a year ago; now that it's back with the Ning ID (with the What is Ning? link) ... so guess what?! Everyday I open my email, I have "Come Join Me" invitations for brand new networks ... these are NEW networks created by MY NETWORK MEMBERS that I have spent two years and a whole lot of resources to build. These members could have set up a Group on my network for their related interests, but instead, they go set up their network. Two years of work and loyalty to Ning and this is where I find myself today, a lot of inactive members who've moved on to create their own networks.
I see that Ning reps are responding to some threads here at G S, but not this one.
I’m irked!
-
Inappropriate?Wow that's messed up! I've had this happen to me too. One of my former members left the network and started another one, and sent an invitation to all his friendslist throughout ning. This included some of the membrs on my network, who did not want this kind of solicitation from a member who (in their eyes) had left the network on bad terms. So I get the COMPLAINTS, asking why they are getting messages from this former member to join another network, or to join various groups on that other network. It is kind of hard to explain to people why they are getting spammed like this.
There are people who go from network to network with the sole intention of joining, gaining as many friends as possible, and spamming them or advertising their business all over the place.
I think that Ning reps know this is a valid issue, but are taking a "I'm not touching that one!" approach to it.
I hope for a solution very soon on this. I think you should only be allowed to invite members to a network that you are still a part of. Once you leave a network, your friends on that network should be erased from your list. This is how it works on facebook, myspace, etc. Once you deactivate and delete your account, you sign up and start back clean.
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?Folks until Thisis50.com complains you all can hang it up. lol!
In all seriousness you are asking Ning not to be Ning in a certain sense. However since we do have to answer the complaints it would be fair for them to allow members to opt out. I think that is the most you could possibly hope for.
I’m silly
-
Inappropriate?Derek, with respect, I disagree. Ning is holding onto an idea that is not working. Many of the abusers of this application do not have the same drive and determination to build solid networks as do the NCs they recruit new members from. When members join multiple networks, they simply can not be active community members of all of them. If Ning is attempting sheer numbers, they're getting them with this strategy, but they are not active members. And many sites splintered by the Cross-network Invite Recruitment will die, so who wins?
-
Inappropriate?Oh I agree with you NC_A but unless your network has the numbers of thisis50.com there isn't a whole lot you can do about it. At this point Ning has read all this don't you think... I believe that Gina and company firmly believe the current strategy to be a winner. Seriously folks this is really a lost cause. You'll have better luck with another issue.
-
Inappropriate?Ning. I remember you said you were going to reply to topics here. Why are you ignoring this one which is one of the most popular at Get Satisfaction. What benefit do you see in allowing cross-network invites? Please don't say it allows members to discover new networks. It doesn't. It allows members to get spammed by copy networks or to get random spam invites to networks which they have no interest in. The cross-network invite issue is something you need to look at again.
-
Inappropriate?I have now simply started to ban the members / friends on my networks that invite me to their own networks through the "all friends" option. If I'm friends with them on other networks I google their name to find out which and then I remove them as a friend.
Let this idea spread so that people learn the hard way this is not the road forward to expand a network. -
This reply was removed on 07/26/09.
see the change log -
Inappropriate?I am understanding now why this is not a big deal to Ning. I get it... You've got to be ruthless on Ning or you will never survive. Social Media Darwinism! Folks I think we have had the wrong tact here, maybe we should all just blast away too and send out our own "Come Join Me's" . Everybody Pillage everyone else's network and see who is left standing afterward.
Someone blasts your network with "come join me invites" YOU blast them back tenfold! Crush them! It's dog eat dog from now on! If this is the game then I suggest we all start playing! Get ready to ban and blast away ladies and gentlemen! I'm tired of whining about this so I am gonna embrace it and krush it!
Maybe someone should come up with a network that keeps a tally of how many members we can steal away each day! Let's have some sport with it! Someone get istoleyourmembers.ning.com and let's do this!

"It's A Zero Sum World!"
I’m ruthless!

Inappropriate? Is there a serious discussion anywhere of NC's regarding alternatives to Ning?
I've researched the ins and outs of other platforms -- web-based and hosting on one's own server, open source versus fee -- and while it's not as "slick" as other options, I find I am focused on Social Engine.
Primarily because I need to have a classified ad module and so few include that right now.
Does anyone have any feedback about this option, or can you direct me to other discussions of alternatives to Ning? -
Inappropriate?DRP ... check out this thread, there may be others, but, this is one I recall:
http://www.getsatisfaction.com/ning/t... -
That's what I needed. Thanks! :) -
Inappropriate?Let's face it, Ning has gone back on their word. They promised YEARS ago to close this loophole. They have not. And I'm pretty sure they don't plan on it. Now they want us all to be groups on ning.com.
I have dummy members that I use to receive these invitations and then delete the offenders and list their name and put their picture on my site as a known spammer. Yes, they can still send invitations to my members, but at least I out them. It actually has slowed down the invitations.
I'm fine with them leaving this loophole open on free sites. But I've paid for every service possible for years now. Premium NC's should not be treated this way.
And seeing this thread that is months old with no response from Ning... very discouraging...
I’m supremely frustrated
-
Inappropriate?• When members on a Ning network make an invitation, they should ONLY be given the opportunity to invite "friends on this network". The fact that they can even invite people from other networks is where the problem is.
• It's NOT enough that Ning is now putting a limit on how many friends new members can ask for. Some are just joining a network, making ONE friend, moving on to the next network, making ONE friend etc.
• Paying Network Creators should have the ability in manage, to guard their site from cross network invites !!!
• I keep getting these myself, and I ban those members, but I'm not friends with everyone so I can't check how many of my members keep getting these invites, and the first on (before I ban them) might be all it takes for someone else to steal my members.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I am agreeing to this situation. not only do i get the in ning.com but i also get these invites in my email it is dumb and even after u block the emails the dummies still send the invites. I am working to clean my email account so it actually works better and with emails i want to read not spam
I’m pissed
-
Inappropriate?My latest solution:
Since I KEPT ON getting invites from a member that I had already banned AND removed from my friends list on Ning.com - naturally I had to turn up the methods a little:
I made a "rule" in my email program:
• any emails from user xxxxx xxxx
• redirect email to (insert users email address - you have it in your manage - members section on your network)
This now means that every time this member spam invites me (how is this inviting me when we are no longer friends ANYWHERE on Ning?) this email will bounce my mail box and be redirected to the members own mail box.
Now if we all started doing this.... :)
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Ning: you will not allow us to do network broadcast messages to the members who have CHOSEN to join our network, but members who we have banned from our network, who we are no longer friends with on Ning.com can STILL KEEP SPAMMING US WITH INVITES AND EVENTS ??????
Even though I have banned this member from MY network, AND deleted her from my friends list on Ning.com - this girl keeps comming back for more:
http://wiziqedu.ning.com/profile/Sukh...
Sukhpreet Kaur
She has of cause ignored all messages sent to her before she was banned from my network. Perhaps she turned off all emails??? (search for Email Digest here on Get Satisfaction)
How is she still sending me event invites when I have no friend relations to her ANYWHERE ???
Ning you are making some otherwiser very happy customers VERY VERY VERY ANGRY !!!
If you do NOT fix this, the anger will compile, and eventually explode in behaviour we probably will all regret !
I’m ANGRY !!!!
-
Inappropriate?Frustrating, right? Ning disables the Network Creators forum with the promise that this 'getsatisfaction' forum would address our needs better AND they promised they would be involved here - listening to issues and seeking solutions. 0 for 2. I'm thinking that they never will address this concern even though they have employees that monitor these forums.
They have no answer or rationale for their atrocious policy that harms their best customers, Premium NC's.
I'm pretty sure now that they set up this getsatisfaction forum only because it would be harder for prospective Ning customers to read about their lack of attention to their paying customers. As we can see, they obviously did NOT do this so that we could actually Get Satisfaction.
On a related note, Ning has reduced the number of outstanding invitations to 50 from 100. Sorry... that only slows down the spam. That does NOT solve the problem. Allowing NC's to disable cross-network invites and 'shared' content entirely is the only solution that will stop the harassment of our members.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Hey guys ever heard of ConnectU? See my earlier post... Social Media Darwinism, only the strong survive... 2 tips for ya!
1). Before you let anyone on your network check them out, it's the only way. My networks would be 2x larger now if I took everyone but it would be a hot mess with all the spam and crap like these "come join me on..." You have to check out every new member BEFORE they join your network!
2). They steal from you do it back to them... If someone tries to steal one of your members, steal 10 of theirs! JOIN their networks right back!
Fight back!
-
Inappropriate?Every invite I get from another network I am going to report. It is SPAM. It is unsolicited and I never signed up to receive email invites to any other network.
REPORT REPORT REPORT and maybe Ning will get the idea. Maybe???
I’m disappointed in Ning for allowing this.
-
Inappropriate?Who are you reporting it to? 'cause I'm right behind you on this.
I really get angry about this as well. It's such a "Fxxx You" attitude to get these invites even after one has removed the person from ones own network AND on the Ning.com friend list. Yesterday I was STEAMING about this ha ha ;) -
Inappropriate?My support ticket to Ning:
I have banned Sukhpreet Kaur from my network MyAppleSpace.com because she kept sending me invites to other networks and events on other networks. She was ignoring my private messages with kind warnings of this conduct. She probably had her emails set to no emails to avoid spam right?
http://wiziqedu.ning.com/profile/Sukh...
After I banned her. After I removed her from my friends list on Ning.com she is still sending me invites to events on other networks (she is on quite a few).
If I am not allowed to send out a Network Broadcast message to members who has turned off all emails, because it would be spam to contact the people who joined my network of their own free will.
How is it ok to let Sukhpreet Kaur send me invite after invite after I have done everything in my power to stop it? Now if she was sending out Network Broadcast messages on a network I was a member, I could at least just leave the network.
Will I have to leave Ning with my 7 premium service networks, before this spamming will end?
Our networks suffer from people entering in one end, and after a while turn off all emails due to overflooded inboxes resulting in us loosing them at the other end. New members join and the same pattern repeats.
We can no longer reach our members who signed up of their own free will and who can leave of their own free will. We are not allowed to send our own members network broadcasts because you are affraid they will see this as spam, but members on Ning.com can cross network invite us all day long and you don't see a problem?
And if you do see a problem, why the silence from Ning in this thread
http://getsatisfaction.com/ning/topic...
Please notice the high number of supporters, and less than satisfied "customers".
You are not responding. You are not allowing us to reach all our own members. You are quietly letting this cross network spamming continuing.
If you pay attention you might notice a growing anger !
In regard to your latest "fix" proposal, being released soon: how will it fix the spam to put a limit on the number of friends members can invite at a time? This girl I'm now reporting to you only had two friends on my network, and probably two friends on another network, 2 friends on another etc.
I'm sorry, but these problems you have no time to deal with on get satisfaction, is making this otherwise happy customer VERY VERY ANGRY !
And like I said, if it was just a network broadcast message I could leave the network sending them out (too often). Will I have to leave Ning to make this stop? Can you PLEASE, for the love of any God, respond in the thread building up to 30 supporters now on Get Satisfaction?
http://getsatisfaction.com/ning/topic...
This is me trying to be as kind as possible, seriously !
I’m frustrated

Response from Ning:
Hi,
First, we're sorry to hear you're receiving these unwanted invitations and messages, as we take spam very seriously. We completely understand why you're upset about this.
To protect the privacy of the member you mention, we aren't able to disclose account-specific information or settings about their Ning ID.
Do you recall if at any point you may have messaged Sukhpreet Kaur directly through email? If so, it's possible she's sending you these invitations and messages by directly messaging your email address.
As the Network Creator, you can definitely use the Broadcast Message feature to reach out to your members and your members are also able to choose which emails they wish to receive from your social network (such as network messages, member activity and discussion activity). Some Network Creators may simply want to use the Broadcast Message feature as a way to instant message everyone within their social network. When this happens, they may be notified about over-messaging and complaints about these broadcasts. One way to minimize the number of complaints from your members is by giving them the option to opt-out of these messages and to be sure you're sending them on-topic and pertinent messages.
So that we can look into this specific issue in a bit more detail, would it be possible for you to forward us some of the messages and invitations you have received from Sukhpreet Kaur. If so, please include the full message and full header information such as to, from, reply-to, subject and date fields.
Regarding the post you mention on Get Satisfaction (http://getsatisfaction.com/ning/topic...), we aren't able to always respond to every discussion. With regards to people on the Ning Platform receiving invitations, we're able to best help people on an individual and/or per-social network basis if they contact us through the Ning Help Center (http://help.ning.com).
Just so you know, when a member is friends with someone on Ning, they're friends across all social networks. Being friends with someone allows them to send private messages within a social network, and invitations across all social networks. Sometimes people are quick to accept friend requests from people they don't personally know. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it can lead to some confusion as to why they're receiving random invitations and who's sending them. While Sukhpreet Kaur may have had only two friends on your social network, it's possible she had more friends on other social networks across the Ning Platform.
The recent changes to limit the number of friends that can be invited is part of some performance changes we've been making to the Ning Platform. We certainly appreciate your patience as we explore which settings have optimal results when it comes to friending and messaging.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you,
The Ning Team -
My response to Ning:
• I have no interest in the contact information for Sukhpreet Kaur. The problem is a little greater than this one member.
• To my recollection I have not sent Sukhpreet Kaur any private emails. I only do this sometimes when messaging with a sponsor.
• Which email adderess would you like me to forward the spam invites from Sukhpreet Kaur to?
• I can read in your response that you picked up on my frustration and anger over this issue. Be aware that it is only due to my deep love for the Ning software that I have not left your platform faced with these destructive elements in the software. Is it your strategy to rely on this from the rest of your customers going into the future?
• I can "definitely" reach out to my members through broadcast message, but they can just as definitely make sure that I can't ? I would describe my intelligence as average, and I cannot read your reponse in any other way than: the members are deciding if I can reach them, hence I can definitely NOT reach all my members through broadcast message.
My question is this: why can the members who of their own free will signed up to my network decide if I can reach them, yet people from other networks can decide wheather they can reach me?
• "we aren't able to always respond to every discussion". In the real world your customers live in, we are not seing ANY responses to ANY discussions. Here I'm not counting the once a month reply from Ning because I feel it's embarrassing to mention.
• "While Sukhpreet Kaur may have had only two friends on your social network, it's possible she had more friends on other social networks across the Ning Platform". So if I wanted to go on a spamming spree on Ning, I would simply have to join 100 networks and only make two friends on each to avoid showing up on the spam radar on any of the individual networks? Are you telling me that you acknowledge this spam loop hole? Do you have evidence that it does not exist? Or are you telling me between the lines that it's the kind of spam you have no intention of preventing? I am of cause desperately hoping the answer will be that you will do everything in your power to prevent spam, ....even when it means removing a ....link (invite friends on other networks - paraphrasing) ?
• worried that real life friends will not have the email information so they can simply use the normal invite function?
• I'm sincerely sorry this correspondence can not be of a more joyful nature, but double speak answers, ignoring of customers, refusal to remove one link (all friends invite) that could stop the largest spam problem on Ning / largest outcry on Get Satisfaction, just puts me in a position where I do not have the extra energy to completely remove my dissatisfaction from my message (I have read it through a couple of times and removed the "red field" phrasing a few places).
I'm sorry, but you need critique if you must learn from your customers, which I belive is a broadly accepted philosophy used elsewhere in the corporate world.
• Evan came on appologizing that Ning had been so invisible on Get Satisfaction, promised this would end immediately.... and then he left not to be heard from since ?
• Would you prefer that I posted your response to all your customers on Get Satisfaction who are up in a roar about this problem and who are desperately seeking an answer, so you won't have to trouble yourself? I mean seriously ! -
Nings response:
Hi,
The Ning Platform as you know it has been around since 2007. In this short period of time, we've made strides in how the platform performs and we have our eyes set on the long-term success of Ning! Because of this, we really do care about hearing from passionate Network Creators such as yourself and we appreciate all of your thoughts and questions.
We completely understand why you'd like to be able to message all of your members. That said, we've included the functionality for members of your social network to choose which messages they'd like to receive. These are personal settings made by each member and these cannot be changed by the Network Creator or Administrators. As mentioned, we take issues relating to spam very seriously, so once we have more information about the messages and invitations you've received, we'll be able to investigate this complaint and, at our discretion, take the appropriate action. You can place messages directly in your response to this message or by forwarding the message(s) to abuse@ning.com. If you do forward us messages from Sukhpreet Kaur, please also mention your ticket number in your response so that we can keep track of these messages. Please also include the full message and full header information, such as to, from, reply-to, subject and date fields.
So that we're clear, in what ways are you worried that real life friends won't have email information? Also, you mention our refusal to remove the invite friends link? Network Creators have the ability to hide the "Invitation" tab and/or update their social network's language settings to more accurately reflect the actions they'd like or not like their members to take.
While Get Satisfaction is a great way to educate the greater Network Creators community and our members in a transparent manner, answering social network-specific issues directly with Network Creators and members via our Help Center (http://help.ning.com) remains how we handle the majority of questions and inquiries. Also, you might be interested in seeing how we see our presence on Get Satisfaction in the following post: http://getsatisfaction.com/ning/topic....
Best regards,
The Ning Team -
NINGs response:
Hi Brian,
We're all about keeping things as transparent as possible and that is one of the reasons why we use Get Satisfaction as a sounding board for Network Creators and members. Going hand-in-hand with this, we are best able to handle issues most effectively between members privately through tickets in the Ning Help Center. It's also important for us to keep track of specific issues Network Creators and members might be facing, so this is why we like hearing from people through the Ning Help Center as well.
The invitations and sharing features provided through Ning make it easy for members to share content with people they're connected with on the platform. Members can also share content with people they know in real life, such as through using the email function. Ultimately, the way one person might interpret their relationship with people they're friends with on the platform may be totally different from the way another person on the platform understands their friends list and connections.
For any social network on the Ning platform, it's up to the Network Creator and members to decide who they'd like to invite and it's up to the recipient to decide if they'd like to accept the invitation. That said, we completely understand and appreciate your thoughts about the "All Friends" invitation feature. Please know that we are working behind the scenes on this specific feature and re-thinking its ideal function within the platform.
Thank you also for sending along the messages sent from Sukhpreet Kaur. We're investigating this specific issue and will take the appropriate actions. Please let us know if you receive any other messages from this person and forward us the full message and header information as well.
Thanks again,
The Ning Team -
Inappropriate? You might check out the following update a help.ning.com, which describes upcoming enhancements, including:
"4. Fostering real friendships. We’ve heard from some of you that occasionally a member will join your Ning Network just to make a bunch of friends and invite them to their own Ning Network. Obviously this is not what friends are for, so we’ll be building in some sensible limits on invites and friend requests that will only affect people who aren’t using these features in the way they’re intended. We’ll have more details on these measures in the fall."
This sounds like an effort to address some of these issues, although they ought to entitle this "spam management" or something more direct.

Inappropriate?I have read this thread, among a number of others in which Ning has been non-responsive.
-
Ok sorry then. But I mention that update in my response to Ning, and it sounded on your reply that like you were unaware of this. No biggie :) -
Inappropriate?I didn't know we could hide the "Invite" tab -- how do we do that? I can't do so from the tab manager.
Thanks. :) -
Yes I was thinking that too, but forgot to include this in my reply.
I'm going to check if I can translate away the "invite all" versus "friends on this network" option. -
That was kinda dumb of me to say that. Of cause we can't translate a link that resides on all the other Ning networks. But we CAN translate the "all friends" link on OUR network so that OUR members are not inviting OTHER networks members over to us ! -
Inappropriate?Every cross network spammer emails should be redirected to abuse@ning.com - including your ticket number if you are running a ticket at Ning support on the matter.
-
Inappropriate?I agree. Report them all, friend or not, if it is across networks.
Still don't understand how they justify the fact that anybody can send emails across networks yet as network owners we aren't allowed to send members emails and override any settings. We are the administrators and the people responsible for running the network, keeping members informed of important issues etc.
Surely as a network owner we should be able to send important emails to everyone. How do you let them know important information...like I am shutting down the network and moving somewhere else...aaaaah. I see now.
I’m amused, frustratedm angry, happy and generally psychotic.
-
Inappropriate?Would facebook make a link that said: "take all your friends with you to MySpace please" ? Of cause not, it would be silly.
Yet this is what Ning has created, a way for you to take all your friends with you to another Social Network !?!?!?
And to make it even worse, this invitation is not being conducted on YOUR network (then you could perhaps translate your way out of it so this link and name it: "please donate 20$ to Al Qaeda") it is actually a feature being conducted on the other network where people are doing the inviting from !!!
Imagine MySpace making a feature called:"bring all your friends from facebook to MySpace". I'm sure thay can't do that, but imagine the anger facebook would feel... oh wait.... that's the anger you are all felling already...
I guess we just have high expectations to the company that creates the best social networking software on the planet, and then they go through the ice on something so obvious.
Please Ning, how far down on our knees must we go... ?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? It would be great if you Ning would limit friend 'Sharing' of content and network 'Invitations' to friends who share at least 1 mutual network.
This way, banned members cannot continue to spam friends unless they mutually share at least one other network/interest.
This would solve A LOT of spam issues!!
I hope Ning will consider implementing this.
I’m confident

-
Inappropriate?Yes Alex, that would be a great first step.
I also hope that Ning will consider this. We can't find anything better than Ning out there, so it's like dealing with a Ferrari with no headlights and thinking "how could they make a ferrari and then deliver it with no headlights??"
This is actually much more frustrating than getting a Fiat with no headlights :))) - hence the frustration in this thread. -
Inappropriate?amazing. they wont do a dam thing about this other than limit the number of friends we can invite on OUR OWN WEBSITES.
-
Inappropriate?ning could care less if anyone spams your members! As you all found out, ning spams our own members.
For those of you who have had ENOUGH of ning reneging on contract terms, getting burned out of many (tens of) thousands of dollars, losing hundreds/thousands of hours of time invested in what was promised as YOUR network by ning, then email me at: radioairwaves@gmail.com.
I am absolutely, 100% FOR SURE going to hire a law firm to represent me v, ning. I want my money back and damages for what I believe was a fraud ning committed. I will be made whole for this, for SURE.
I did not go to work for a very rich dude named andreeson to build his ning empire. I worked for what was promised would be mine. I was duped, conned and fully exploited by ning. Now ning will have to face the legal ramifications of their deceptive acts.
Please contact so that we may pool our info, etc to pursue ning in court: radioairwaves@gmail.com - all info will be held in the strictest of confidence.
I’m going to SUE ning 4 sure.
-
Inappropriate?I know this will not solve the overall problem of spam but it will for the individual
http://www.ning.com/settings/emailnot...
and giving the link to your members to encourage them to stop receiving invites may help. -
Inappropriate? As many of you have noticed, now that Ning Apps is out the door, the first indication that we will now once again see regular updates to the Ning software comes with a solution to the spam invites ! Yes, a solution to the spam invites!
Ning will later this week remove the ability for members to invite cross network. I say again... oh, you got it :)

Inappropriate?WAY TOO LITTLE - FAR TOO LATE!!
Now that ning has:
1. successfully destroyed my networks by tolerating this KNOWN problem for a year +, and
2. even encouraged members to STEAL my members -
3. and of course ning made sure everyone on ning could also steal my members,
4. spammed my members to death,
I should celebrate?
How about me saying thanks to ning with the lawsuit I have coming for you ning - guaranteed... Thanks ning for ripping off and cheating so many serious NC's for years.
Get your checkbook out!!
There - ning - now are you gonna CENSOR this post again for alleged "abusive language" b/c I called you all "morons" in my last post??
:))))))))
I’m being censored by ning
-
If you're here to get help, great. If you're just here to harass Ning employees, we won't allow you to continue. -
Inappropriate?One word: Yay!!!!
Thank you so much.
:) -
Inappropriate?Good good good good good good good happy happy joy joy!
Yess!
Thank you so much!
We are so glad something was done about this!!!!!
I’m elated
-
Inappropriate?Thank you for making this change! This is one of the best moves Ning has done as a company.
Your blog states that you will be releasing some new features for viral invitations. I really hope this does not bring the cross-network promotion abilities back. Do you have any information on what Ning is planning to do with this?
I’m undecided
