I believe this is already possible, but unfortunately cannot be done directly through Ning, as they have no created a way to integrate it straight into the Networks.
If you goto the Applications Page for your Social Network, I believe you will that you can add an Application called Status Update.
To let everyone know what you're doing.
You can also change the text above your profile picture (the big text) which can class as a status update.

We're definitely planning on introducing a Status feature in the future, though we've pushed back working on it to focus on bug fixes and the upcoming public launch of Ning Apps, which is now in private beta.
If you'd like to have Status Updates on your profile page right now, you can use the Profile App "Status Update" to do just that, as Frayzurr mentioned. Just head to your profile page and click "Add application."
We still want to launch a native Status feature, and we're hoping to get to it toward the end of the summer.

Inappropriate?After WordPress, Ning should be the last one to launch a status feature from the Whole World Wide Web. What a shame. Maybe in June indeed.
I don't expect Ning to come with a revolutionary status feature such as adding a filter. Let's see but i rather prefer to wait for hellotxt or shouthem. he he he1 Comment Add a comment

And this is true. At the time when such features are making a revolution in the network on Ning postponed to later, the priority for considering applications that Ning is not adopted. There are few compared with other networks (MySpace, Orkut, Hi5)

It's being pushed back because we — as we always have — are shifting priorities to focus on other things, namely scalability, bug fixes and Ning Apps, as mentioned above. As a long-time Network Creator, I know you're familiar with our how fluid the date estimates for our releases can be. We plan to continue with that approach, regularly shifting priorities as needed, and we appreciate your flexibility with that approach.

I fully understand this, but why don't you guys announce a new feature when it's READY to be announced and not when things aren't clear yet?
This is very confusing for networkcreators who count on these changes to happen but not getting it.

We do that because we like to give Network Creators an idea of what's coming up, even if it may shift or get held back. I'm sorry if that's frustrating for you, but we think most Network Creators are helped by getting an idea of what's in the pipeline.

Maybe it would be wiser to announce it in a different way, say that you are PLANNING to launch a certain feature approximately then or then or that you guys have plans to launch a new feature in the near future but don't give a date yet, because people are counting on this from that moment and when they are not getting it they get frustrated...

I agree. It's like telling your friends you're having a big party soon. Until you anounce a date, you're going to get questions every day, and the longer you take to throw the party, the more your friends are going to bug you about it. Anticipation left too long unaddressed can turn into frustration.

If you want STATUS updates... start your own microblogging service on www.shoutem.com have your members put their status widgets on their page and you as an nc can also add the updates widgets on your network in a textbox.... this will be a great alternative

It works just PERFECTLY.... the great thing about it is that you can immediately addyour shoutem updates directly on your own TWITTERPAGE... and you can put your TWITTER UPDATES on your social network on NING so your updates show up on your ning home!
Your memberscan add a status update widget to their pages also in a textbox when they go to the 'widgets page' of your network on shoutem and choose the option 'WIDGETS' under NING or the NING widgets for NING members. You as the creator of the network and as an NC of NING should choose the version for NING admins. This widget shows ALL updates going on inside your shoutem microblogging service!

I understand this, but you can add your shoutem network via an iframe into your ning network so they can shout from that particular page and its simple as that :)

Yes you do Moses. I did it and would show you but I closed that network to focus on my other network. I'll have to do it again. You can request web dav access from Ning and upload the files (there are two).

@Thunder X: can you provide the link to access webdav. Is there a login and password? I pretty much like Friend Connect for the rating system but my problem is other: i don't like members to sign up 2 times (FC or Shoutem). Not user-friendly at all.

Inappropriate?@Charles: Web dav is method for accessing your network's files. The url would look like: https://yoursitename.dav.ning.com You would log in with your usual Ning ID credentials. However, there's more to it, and you'll have to request access from Ning first (which may take a few days) and they will provide you with instructions.

That's very helpful. Tx a lot. Will give it a try (i got my webdav access already but no instructions). However, I cannot imagine that members who registered on a ning network can use Friend Connect with their Ning ID and Ning Profile image without signing up again. Or is Google using same Ning ID? Sounds too cool to be true :)

Inappropriate?@Charles: Certain of Friend Connects widgets do require additional sign in, but not Comments. One of the reasons for having to upload their files to your network is that it reads your network's data, who your members are. I may be wrong about that (how and why it works), but I can say for certain that it works.
