My problems with this crap is as follows.
1- you want to make crap apps.. more power to you JUST DONT ADD IT WITH OUT ASKING ME. (I come to my site only to see this horrifying dung on my screen)
I spend 1000s of dollars on this place.. how about you fing ask me before adding random manure??
2- when you make an app.. any app.. dont link it back to your site on every opportunity you get.
Also, dont mention ning this and ning that... its useless to any serious NC.
I honestly dont care anymore.. just dont add shit with out asking me.. thats all I ask.
I know for certainty this will go no where, its why I am coming of as an ahole.. I dont care anymore.

We appreciate that Ning Virtual Gifts won't be right for every Ning Network. That's why you can remove virtual gifts by signing in as the Network Creator and choosing "remove the gifts feature" from the Manage Gifts tab on the Manage page. We've been talking about Ning Virtual Gifts for a week on the Ning Blog (http://blog.ning.com), where we post updates and upcoming releases before they go out. That's the best place stay informed about new features coming out on Ning.

I used to be on a notification list for all approaching updates, but haven't gotten one in ages and can no longer find a signup link. It was so easy to keep up with things as compared to now, when I have to post reminder stickies if there's any chance I'll remember to check the New Releases Ning Blog manually every week. I like to be prepared for the newest usually-useless-to-me thing that's coming down the pike but I've got too much to do with my own group to hang out on Ning Blog. Lately I've wanted to disable just about all the new features ASAP before my members get all confused and start bombarding me with questions.

I don't think its relevant that you mention this was on your blog for a week. Your blog is full of stuff that isn't relevant to me and my network. If you want me to read it, set up a blog that is only about topics relevant to network creators.
Secondly - and more important. My premium site users were exposed to a feature before I as the owner authorized its use. That is just simply wrong. I wonder if my good friends who write for Network World, Info World and other magazines will be interested in this? I think they will. And they will if I don't hear back from someone at NING directly about this.
As a premium customer, I want to approve all new features I add to my premium networks - simple as that.

You're wrong, Lynn: There are no premium customers with Ning. Perhaps the right time to read the terms of service a little bit more thoroughly? It's you - to own your content. But it's Ning - to own all the rest. And if they decide to surprise us with a wonderful sparkling christmas jingle or an exciting new 6 column layout - all we can do is agree. Since we HAVE agreed already. It's that easy.

I understand your feeling 1CR, but whatever the terms of service, getting good or bad press can make all the difference if you are looking for the press you need to get the next round of investment.

I think you're missing the point 1CR, this is not a legal discussion. I'm sure legally NING can do what it wants with our networks.
Instead, the complains are both ethical: since their promise was "build your OWN social network"; and commercial, for we NC's believe it would have been a good strategy for NING to make us happy, and we in turn, since we are the ones who attracted and know them, make our members happy. -

I agree strongly about the forum software. Invision board has them beat hands down and is seo friendly. I launched two other sites recently with Invision Board and I'm amazed at how much the google god likes them. I haven't seen anything like this on my ning site. -
Inappropriate?If Ning would have put this much energy and thought into other releases then I wouldn't be so pissed but this gift thing is stupid as shit. Since this is a potential money $$$ maker for Ning, they went all out.
How about concentrating on a better message forum software (the current one SUCKS), Video Categories, Chat Room, Recurring Events, and things that actually make our networks better instead of this myspace type bullshit.
The whole OpenSocial thing was a complete failure and Ning Apps was even more of a failure.
I seriously do not know the last time Ning did an update and I was impressed... and the thing is.. I'm actually impressed with this Gift update - but it is just a stupid concept. Once again.. another stupid and pointless "upgrade" to our networks.
SE4 and Vbulletin CMS/Social Network will be released soon - Once I figure out which one I want - The writing is on the wall Ning.

Are you telling me that despite paying for a service (for a non-profit) I have to keep checking the blog just to keep my network as it initially was? Any even if I had seen it on there presumably I'd have had to be online the second it was launched to remove it without people seeing it! If Ning knows its not for everyone, why not add it as an OPTION for network creators.

Inappropriate?I have just removed this from my site. I think nings target audience is some what different to mine. My members here in the UK will certainly no pay to send another member a picture of a balloon or something similar!
There is one good thing about this release and that is hopefully ning will now concentrate on the more important issues such as chat, media management, adding a comment feature to the status updates, and giving more control to the NC.
Time will tell.

No wonder all of our questions have been pretty much going answeredthey have been busy on yet another useless app. (I don't mean problems just questions or request - you know things we run by Ning or at times beg for and they are too busy making something only a small percentage of us will use)
So this is how I found out about it - one of my main Mods sent me one with a tag "WTF is this". No other members used them - surprise.
Most of my members are in Europe/South Pacific so I am sleeping when they are on.
Guess momma is going to have to edit the group again to remove something else before the kiddies are charged for an overseas "graphic" that 99% of my group can create and send to each other for free in their sleep. Oh wait they have been doing that in the grand Comment box... ;-)
Well done Ning another example of dumbing down our networks! As Charles said - less mature.
And before anyone freaks out on those of us who aren't happy (this is is Get Satisfaction not "walk over us") I know its just $2 per 100 credits, but its childish to begin with, its 2009 graphics are readily available for free everywhere, and its insulting the intelligence/age of our members and Ning's entire business.

Inappropriate?The gift app is a way for members to show affection and friendship to each other, reaching out with more than just a "hello".
Those of you who did not come to a social network company, to get social network features you already have on facebook, shouldn't you just turn this new feature off?
If you don't want an extra income, if you don't want to give your network the ability to reach out to one another in this particular way, just turn it off.
I would agree however that Ning should not automatically assume that everyone just wants their new feature. To alert their NC's they should instead make it available in the manage area and show an alert ONLY the NC can see.
It just occoured to me that might actually be the case, but I'm guessing not.

Inappropriate?Seriously Ning? Do you guys have a checklist of stupid ideas that you are trying to get through? Many of us have openly mocked the gift idea on this site. Many of us are paying money to run our network (the thing you keep telling us we own and control). Many of us have complained about links to Ning on our sites.
Why would ANYONE think we would want you adding another one of your bad ideas to our sites whenever you feel like it?
The reason is simple: It's for your benefit and not ours. This move is all about generating revenue for you rather than helping us build better and more successful networks.
I woke up to an email this morning letting me know I had received a gift on my site. I didn't get an email saying gifts were an option, I never added it as a feature.
NING- let me be very clear- stay off my site. Stop changing things to my network or give me all of my money back. This is such a giant "fuck you" to everyone who gives feedback on here. One of the biggest in a long time.
So let me calmly and sincerely say, "fuck you" right back for thinking you can decide how much money you get to make off my members without consulting me.
Can someone please figure out how to leave ning for Google Wave and share it with us?

I run a business site and definitely don't want people sending flowers and teddie bears. Sad thing is, I think there are ways we could use the technology, but the company is so intent on making $$ off our users that I'm not even going to bother.
Sure, we can create our own gifts, but ONLY if we charge for them. Our company doesn't allow us to charge anything for use of the site, so its a useless update...
Ditto to what everyone else said above... How about working together with us to meet our needs as NC's. Wanna make money? Fine... just don't do it at the cost of pissing off the people who make the company happen.

It just makes you angry because you might have spent money on premium services. I feel your pain but how many times do you need someone from Ning to come on here and tell you that "they are not a completely white label solution". Stop being such lazy asses and migrate to a solution that is! You've got VBulletin, SocialEngine, Jomsocial, Buddypress, Elg, and more! Come on people! Download Mamp (or Namp) and try these out on your local machines to get a feel for them... Or you can sit and bitch at Ning all day!

How in the hell am I lazy? I have over 125,000 members on my network.. Should I just rip the fucking site down and start 100% new and leave the 125,000+ members that I have busted my ass to get out in the cold to start over?

Also.. has it occurred to you that the majority of the people bitching are the Ning "OLD SCHOOL" NCs?
A lot of NC's put a ton of trust into Ning back in 2007 and until recently, Ning's business model has shifted to screw us.
The COO of Ning went on the blog to explain that they had to rush this release out because of PRESS related coverage - That is total bullshit. I have exclusive advertisers on my site that does NOT permit any other form of advertising or money making schemes. What if they would have saw that shit on my site? I would have been screwed.
This company is going so backwards that it is a disgrace.
For the past year they have PROMISED US so many things and NONE OF THOSE PROMISES WERE EVER MADE. Instead they launch stupid lame ass things onto their platform that does not do legit/professional networks any good whatsoever.
We still have a very shitty and slow chat room (that they promised they would fix)
We still have a very shitty message forum software (that they promised they would fix)
We still do not have Video Categories (that they have promised us NUMEROUS times)
the list can go on and on... They have not released a decent upgrade in almost a year it seems.
Sure, we got our Status update feature - but it is stupid as hell when people cannot respond to the updates.
I have been a huge fan of Ning for quite a long time. I am still a fan of the platform.. but the way that they have conducted business over the past several months is complete garbage.
I still have a network that is displaying Ning banners - And I have paid to remove that service.. I have sent in numerous support tickets about it... So, when I decided to not pay them one month.. they took my site off line with a huge Ning page in its place.
DON'T TELL ME THAT I AM LAZY. You have no clue whatsoever about me -

That's on you my friend. You have such a looong list of grievances with the company why the hell are YOU still here? Wishful thinking? Dude with all the money you are spending and have spent you need to HIRE a developer to HELP you migrate your site over to something YOU have more control over, or are you going to wait till your community balloons to 200,000? What's it going to take for YOU to start taking YOUR business more seriously?
Ning reps have stated on here that you can get a ONE TIME XML file dump of your network data. That is enough for you to take to a developer and have them manually migrate your site over to the new platform. Do your homework, or is that too much work for you? Get your heads out of the clouds and get to work! I am no different than any of you all this crap with NIng has forced my to stretch and expand my skillset. In an odd way I am actually grateful for that because I don't want to be under the thumb of a company like Ning ever again when it comes to my business. -
Inappropriate?I completely agree with the general feeling here. This gifts app may be fine for some networks, but is an insult to intelligence of the members on my network, and it reflects badly on me as the network creator. My members think that I have gone nuts when this type of thing happens.

Hey I hate the my apps section on our Ning networks and I have it turned off because I can't control which new apps are made available.
What I can't understand is why I should go here and complain about it AS LONG as I can turn it off ?
I just turn it off and it's gone, no longer a problem and I focus on the issues that ARE affecting my network like say a really bad chat section.
I'm trying to find out why you all just don't turn it off like I do with the my apps area? puff it's gone. Ning should have warned us it was coming, and they told us today they are going to do just that. Mission accomplished no?
