Is there an easy way to watch a movie that resides on my laptop, through the Wii?
I only need so many electronics plugged into my TV at any given time. Is the Wii enabled in some way to be a media extender? Can I watch a movie in the browser or something? When can I get those streaming Netflix movies on the Wii? All of the above would be tight.

Inappropriate?mmm... you could setup your Apache web server on your mac and setup a blank webpage with a javascript which when activated it would launch a Quicktime video stream at full screen resolution. That would allow any web enabled device in your home to receive the movie over your wireless network. These scripts are freely available online.
There is also a way to pay movies in your Wii but it involves a few steps. Such as, encoding your movie in the JPEG movie format, uploading it to SD and then viewing it in the photo section of your Wii.
And now you can forget all that and take a look at this "Wii Media Center":

Inappropriate? The homebrew community is really growing. If you have a copy of Zelda: Twilight Princess and an SD card, you can load media directly through the SD card. Later on there may be even streaming.
