Inappropriate?Do you have high-speed internet at home? that's a requisite. I would suggest getting a 40 dollar router with Wireless over any of Nintendo's wired options.
Anyone else? -
Inappropriate?I do have high-speed . I still need to know if the computer needs to be on in order use use it, if that's the case I'm not wasting my money for it.

Inappropriate?I would say a router is entirely worth it for you. Your router connects to your in-line for your Internet and broadcasts the Wi-Fi signal to your Wii (as well as to your computer if you like). I have an Airport, and it works fabulously, and it is an older model. You can buy these used, too, if you are worried about the price. The Airport is more expensive but extremely reliable.
I’m recommending a router

Inappropriate? The USB ($29 - $39) wireless connector you talk about only allows you to setup an access point for your Wii. You can't use it with anything else except Nintendo hardware.(at least according to Nintendo) So, to make it work you have to install the software on your windows PC, You connect the USB dongle to your PC (your PC must be on and connected to the internet at all times as long as you want to use your Wii for the internet), then search for the newly created hot spot with your Wii.
The LAN connector is only as good as how far your Wii is located from your high speed router. You do not want to spend $25 extra on a 50 meter cat-5 LAN wire.
If you do not have a wireless router, DO buy one. Just like Eric, I also like the Airport Extreme, however, it is expensive. For about $49 you can get a cheap Linksys router that will do the trick. If you DO have a wireless router then you will be glad to know that your Wii has build in WiFi B and G. All you got to do is enable it (if it isn't already)
P.s.- If you have a wireless router your computer does not need to be on for your Wii to access the internet.(just to answer your question at the top ^_^ )
