Inappropriate?A very good question to which any answer I could give right now would be conjecture. I will ask for an official answer to your question.
bets regards,
Dustin -
Inappropriate?I am still waiting on the official answer from the PC Suite team. I have not forgotten about you.
Best regards,
Dustin -
Thank you :) -
[below is what I got after emailing nokia; no official linux support]
In response to your inquiry, please be informed that the only software that Nokia has created to connect your Nokia phones to a computer is PC Suite Software and OVI Suite. However, these softwares only supports Windows base computer. Unfortunately, Nokia, has not yet developed a software for Linux computer.
You may like to visit our website for more information and support for your Nokia device. If you have further enquiries, please write to us again or contact Nokia Careline. We operate between the hours of 8.30am and 8.30pm, seven days a week.
Please help us improve our services by completing the Nokia E-mail Satisfaction Survey from the following link.
Kind regards,
Joan

Do you know you can now update your phone software at your own convenience? Visit www.nokia.com.ph/support to check if your phone model is supported and download the "Nokia Software Updater". -
Inappropriate? If you are using Debian/Ubuntu, here is small how to on my blog:
http://smihael.blogspot.com/search/la... 6120
At the other hand it'll be very nice to see QT/KDE based version of PC Suite, especially now Nokia owns Trolltech.
-
Inappropriate?Sorry link is:
http://smihael.blogspot.com/2008/08/a... -
What I would like to see is a way to upgrade my firmware (N95-3) from Linux. It does not have to be a GUI interface or have lots of additional functionality. -
I'am can`t connect my 3250 to Ubuntu -
@Duane: I'll think about this in next school holiday (end of October)
@none: Take a look at gnokii -- http://www.gammu.org (and its GUI called Wammu) -
Inappropriate?Duane,
I have sent your suggestion to the NSU team.
Best regards,
Dustin -
@Dustin: this is just to show you I am still interested in what I would call an "official answer" to my question. There is so many roumors out there... -
Inappropriate?I am following up with them again today.
-
Hi Dustin, another three weeks have gone by and I am truely loosing my faith in Nokia to be willing to answer my realtively simple question. Do you still believe in getting this question answered? -
Inappropriate? That would certainly make me a very very happy bunny!
-
Yeah... Try to use alternative methods:
for syncing: kitchensync (see my blog), funambol Mozilla plugin
for browsing internal memory: ftp over obex (see my blog)
for using your phone as modem: use wvdial (see my blog) or gnome NetworkManager (2.24 and greater)
for bluetooth: kdebluetooth
my blog: http://smihael.blogspot.com/search/la...
(for synchronization Nokia N95 uses port 10, instead 14 that my Nokia 6120c)
That is probably all you need! -
Inappropriate? It's taking a long time to get a response to what seems to be a rather simple question. I'm sure that Dustin R is doing what I can to get an answer, but it's all looking a bit embarrassing for Nokia.
I’m bored of waiting
-
Inappropriate?I think the best is to write 1000+ messages here from 1000+ people (users of Linux and Mac). This will certainly work.
-
Inappropriate? So yeah, if there are not enough pissed off people and they don't care, just like any corporate company. It's sad to see an innovative company like nokia follow this same path.
Bah!
I’m pissed off!
-
Smart thinking! ;) -
Inappropriate? If Nokia doesn't make a Linux version of PC Suite, someone else will.
Some Linux alternatives for Nokia PC Suite:
http://symbianism.blogspot.com/2008/1... -
Inappropriate? If I use any Linux alternatives and loose some data or face any issues to my phone's health, I guess Nokia wouldn't care since it wasn't the Official PC Suite released by Nokia. This is one reason I am not trying any Linux Alternative to PC Suite.
+1 PC Suite for Linux [even a console based tool will work]
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?I have been trying to get my mom's $500 Nokia e71 and my brothers $100(?) Nokia 3230 working with Linux for a long time now. And now I am needing to buy a new phone. I just want to let y'all know that I am gonna buy a Sony Ericsson phone just because of this one HUGE problem with the Nokia phones. Sony Ericsson phones work just fine with my Kubuntu OS. I'm gonna be happy, but my mom and brother will still be sad that they wasted their money on pieces of junk. =o(
I’m frustrated, but relieved that I don't have a Nokia phone.
-
Inappropriate?I'm with Eli on this one, my next device will not be a nokia but more likely some other 'smart' phone which does not crash several times a week and is compatible with my non-microsoft home computer. I have been a Nokia devotee since my second phone way back in 1998, simply due to the fact that as a phone they are (were) reliable, but now I think it's the end of the road...
I would like to say it has been a pleasant journey, however their blatant disregard of a potentially huge market is to me nothing short of corporate bumlove, (please excuse the terminology, or applaud it!) and there is no excuse for ignoring linux users requests while providing only software for windows users.
Not to mention the instability of platforms in general public use, we are supposed to be going forwards not backwards...
Can anyone suggest a good handset/provider combo for the UK market, I am currently on 3 (Hutchinson telecom) using a nokia N95 but won't be for long.
IF NOKIA DO NOT TAKE NOTE IT IS THEIR OWN PROBLEM, HOWEVER THEY WILL FACE A RAPIDLY GROWING POPULATION OF USERS WHO ACTIVELY AVOID THEIR PRODUCTS AND SERVICES IN THE SAME WAY MANY HAVE ABANDONED 'M$' FOR DESKTOP P.C. USE. IF NOKIA REALLY WANT TO PLEASE CUSTOMERS THEY SHOULD LISTEN TO THE MINORITIES AS WELL AS THE MASSES, AND NOT JUST PROVIDE SOFTWARE FOR MS USERS.
As I understand the Android platform is Linux based, I may well be looking into this tomorrow...
I’m angered, but there is a solution
-
Inappropriate?I did expect Nokia was a finnish firm just like Linux
-
Inappropriate?Nokia ... call to Linus Torvalds ))
-
Inappropriate?I hoped this page would provide some useful information... We asked this 7 months ago.
I’m frustated
-
Inappropriate? After six months still no answer, doesn't seem they are willing to support the Linux community. That's sad...
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? We need to start a facebook group for this and spread the word!
Something like a Boycott Nokia Group or something.
That would get there attention, then we could report it to slashdot.org too to get them to notice us even more.

edit: removed my avatar
I’m pissed off!
-
I agree completely!! Facebook group... I'll join! I'll admin if you like too! -
Inappropriate?Nokia doesnt care about customers, it cares about selling phones, thats why there's no real support after you purchase...just look @ some of my other posts....
BTW
Andoid works better, has less glitches, and has software that is actually useful!!! they provide more updates at a faster pace......Like nokia they are a work in progress, but unlike nokia they dont try to pass it off as a finished device....
I have used top of the line noks (such as the E90, n95, n93, 7610, etc etc all the way back to the 1990s) and i still prefer android so far...better os, the HTC is better hardware, more durable(so far) and a lot less problems and less fears of updates....
OH and android takes working with Linux a step further by RUNNING LINUX (Debian)
as far as im concerned, nokia can eat a bag of dicks....i will NEVER buy nokia again after my experience with their support (or lack thereof) staff
I’m amused
-
Inappropriate?Azim: That was really funny with the eat a bag of shlong thing.
I disagree though, I love my nokia. I would never use any other phone again if my nokia came with software for MY OS!!!
I mean come on, what other phone can you throw at someone when you are mad and still use it later?
My problem is that I cant _really_ use my phone because nokia cant even accept that everyone does not use winblows!
NOKIA WAKE UP!!!! WE ARE LEAVING YOU BEHIND!!!!
R
PS: Anyone else know a decent cheapish phone with a cam and mp3 player that does work on linux?
PPS: No my nokia is not broken yet, i hit a good soft target/person. It's just old and used. -
Inappropriate?Motorola NEXTEL phones are great for throwing, my friend demonstrates this by throwing it at a brick wall every week or so, phone still works GREAT, i cant believe it....
Sony Ericsson has some cheaper older models with GREAT AF cameras and mp3 players that come with decent earbuds....THey also work with any OS that has decent bluetooth services...(sync, serial, remote, etc) Most SE phones come with a bluetooth PC remote with profiles (media, presentation, etc) so you can control various aspects of your pc with your phone (volume, next slide, right/left click, etc)
They also have great speakers built in for using the phone as a boom box
I used to feel the way you do, but then i talked to nokia support and they were so rude and unhelpful, I actually had a reason to throw my phone....before that i was a total fanboy for nok.....now i jsut struggle to find any device that suits me...my requirements are as follows:
AF camera, QWERTY, and can fit in the pocket of my tight emo boy jeans (joke! but seriously, no fat chicks, i mean phones, no fat phones)
if i could have an e71 with android (and AWS :-) i would be in geek heaven, and juicing in my shorts.
I’m kidding
-
Inappropriate? We do not have sufficient support from Motorola in Ukraine, Sony Erricson quite cool, but they are more multimedia, but Nokia just what you need, because they are strict, stylish and functional.
-
'functional' would depend on your experience my friend......and SE has business phones (Xperia X1, P series) -
Inappropriate?On Ukrainian I write better.
Sorry :) -
Inappropriate?Funny that the Nokia staff have not cared enough to respond any more, they probably agree with us. I wonder what phones they use? hehe :)
I’m taking a look at ericson phones as a replacement for this nok
-
Inappropriate?hi benedict

sorry this is no help. please only respond if you have a cogent solution -
Inappropriate?I agree that a Facebook group should be created, and that it aims itself to join forces as a proactive group to pester companies that fail to produce Linux alternatives of their software, starting with Nokia.
It's a disgrace that Nokia simply choose to dismiss Linux, and Linux users in this way. Perhaps they see Linux users as a threat, to their lucrative arrangements with Microsoft, although this of course is speculative conjecture, and not necessarily the truth.
Jokes aside, we need a version of PC suite to use their phones properly, in the way we expected. Surely they are breaking their contract to us, by providing us with software that is not suitable for us. When we signed our contracts, did they tell us that? I don't think so.
:)
I’m amused
-
Inappropriate?Well create the damn group already, i'm far too lazy/busy to do it but I will join it!
I’m pissed at nokia!
-
Inappropriate?I'm a Nokia user and a recent converter (or at least user) of linux. I understand most of your frustration with being unable to use you phones to their full potential (btw most companies don't specifically support linux because from a business standpoint it's just such a small minority, it's nothing personal). The development teams at Nokia aren't just sitting around purposefully ignoring linux users. They're hard at work fielding countless other problems while trying to innovate and stay competitive... Also, generally the linux community has been so good at taking care of themselves that it's somewhat surprising good alternatives haven't been created from within the community. I don't support fanboism at all for any company because I feel any product deserves to be judged on it's own merits and not some opinion formed from 5 years earlier due to a problem with another product from the same company (or good experience for that matter). I thought I'd throw in that my current phone is a Nokia E71 that I've had for a year and a half and it has been an incredibly good phone. For my next phone I would consider any device that met my needs at the time. Having said all that, I'm also experiencing some frustration trying to get my phone working on my linux machine. I knew that when I got the phone tho, so no biggie - I'll just keep messing with different things to try and get it working how I'd like it to.
-
Inappropriate? The problem with Nokia is not just that they don't make Linux software, but that they don't lift a finger to help the Linux (or Mac) community to fill the gap.
When I published the URLs of the map files for Nokia Maps (nokiamaps.site666.info) to help Linux and Mac users to feed the data to their phones without using Windows they even tried to force my site offline because they believe their own Windows-only Map Loader app should be the only way to manage their navigation software.
Nokia doesn't make Linux software to manage their phones. Nokia doesn't help developers to make alternatives to PC Suite. Ever seen a line of source code from Nokia to build on? Did Nokia publish a set of specifications that Linux developers can use to build an open source PC Suite to manage Nokia phones? Can Linux developers download the Symbian source code (now fully owned by Nokia) to build an alternative to PC Suite/Map Loader/Firmware Update app?
Nokia doesn't just work hard to code their own Windows-only software, but they also work hard to keep their Windows-only software the only option available. -
Inappropriate?Have you guys seen the HTC phones based on Google's Android? You can do everything that we are complaining about not being able to do in this thread.
Sorry Nokia, you are are never getting my business again. I don't care if you ever go open source now. You can just get knotted as far as I'm concerned!
R
I’m relieved that Nokia is out of my life from now on!
-
Inappropriate?BTW: Check dustin r's profile here > http://getsatisfaction.com/people/dus...
Now I understand why he just left this issue. It's not official from what I can see.
To complain/discuss/rant about this to Nokia go to http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/d... where the official forums are. I think the easy way to get them to see everyones view on this topic would be to add a link to this thread in any post you make there.

I’m really pissed off
-
Inappropriate? Thus is stupid. Just because the majority of people use Windows the others get ignored? Nokia, I have 4 of your phones. They all cost money. Don't you think it's time you people act more user-friendly to the "rest" of your buyers? Or do we have to sponsor you with... let's say... 20 phones before we get our wish? I'm trying yo synchronize my 6303-classic with my desktop PC with the cable I have my my box. It doesn't work, obviously. 6306c is a new toy but anyway, you guys seem to leave Linux development to other people.
Nokia people, please clean up your own backyard. You're making good software for Windows and I'm sure you have the resources the do the same for Linux. Considering you have the necessary knowledge, we are expecting you to act accordingly. We're not a bunch of people that are constantly whining. A large majority of Linux users are actually more experienced people (with PCs and technology) that usually search solutions on their own. That's why you don't get (tens of) thousands of complaints and demands for a Linux PC Suite. But this doesn't mean people won't feel frustrated for the lack of official Linux support for Nokia products.
If you guys claim you are so committed to making people happy, you just can't ignore us indefinitely. Ask the people of ex-Trolltech to help if you really don't have Linux-experienced developers. They will certainly do a great job if asked and financed. What are you waiting for? The rest of the mobile phone producers to come up with full support for all major operating systems while you close your eyes on compatibility? Do we have to get HTC's Andriod cellphones just to spite you - AND - have a normal life with our working environments? That's not healthy at all. You need to reconsider your position and help us. Good words from knowledgeable people value a lot considering we are the ones asked for solutions when regular people want to buy technical stuff. Make us your partners if you can't make us your fans. Being ignorant doesn't help - to be polite.
I’m frustrated
