Why can't I upgrade the firmware on my sim-free N95 to the very latest version?
Everybody is talking about v30.0.015 which adds a few new features, but apparently I'm the only person in England who cannot upgrade his handset. It's not even like it's a branded handset either. It was purchased brand new, not tied to any network.
The Nokia Software Updater only offers to reinstall 21.0.016. Why?

Inappropriate?I may have asked you for this before, but what is the number on the back of your phone next to "Code:". NSU uses your product code to decide if you are allowed to update to a specific version. I can check to see if yours in in the software release. If NSU isn't working and it is in the package, I can get it corrected.
-
That was quick! It's 0547686. -
Software version 30.x is now available for this product using NSU. -
Inappropriate?Your product code is not in the package. I am trying now to find out why. I won't get an answer until tomorrow though.
-
Oh no. :( I backed up all my applications and formatted my memory card, thinking I would reinstall all my applications afterwards. I should have checked before upgrading. I just assumed it would work. This is a vanilla handset after all, so network operators shouldn't prevent firmware upgrades. -
Inappropriate?I agree and am surprised it wasn't part of the 200+ product codes that this was released for. I'll know more tomorrow. Keep the faith. At least you can run a re-install of 21.XX and hopefully clear up that camera issue!
Best regards,
Dustin -
Thanks Dustin. :) I think I'll wait for your answer tomorrow before deciding. -
Inappropriate?Konstructiv,
Still awaiting an answer for you. I didn't forget about you. -
Thanks Dustin! -
Inappropriate?Ok, it's scheduled for the upcoming local release for the UK. For now, I would reload 21.x and restore your data. I will keep an eye on the release notices and let you know when it's been made available through NSU.
Have you checked for a local service center that can flash for you? Typically NSU is delayed by a few days over repair network release. If you have a repair center I can let you know when they should have access to it.
best regards,
Dustin -
Thanks for following this up Dustin. I do appreciate it. I won't be visiting my nearest Nokia Care Point for a f/w upgrade. It's over 20 miles away (in Chester, UK), and after taking it with the camera problem, their solution was to replace the battery. I was adamant the phone would reboot itself after getting an error message while using the camera (which seemd to rule out a battery pins/connection issue), but because I couldn't replicate the issue while I was there, it was no use. After taking pictures later in the day, the problem started occurring again of course. :(
Anyway, Amazon UK have offered a full refund of the price paid last December (which is more than £100 what the N95 is selling for now), and I'd be silly not to take them up on it. I'm thinking of replacing it with a HTC Touch Diamond or an Apple iPhone 3G.
I can't believe it's come to this really, given how much I've raved about my N95 over the past nine months (I've even convinced a few people on internet forums into buying N95 & N73 handsets (I owned an N73 previously)), but at the end of the day, if I can't get problems fixed quickly -- and I have to drive 40 mile round trips for service only to get turned away with the problem unresolved -- I really need to consider other brands.
This is no reflection on the service offered by you, which has been excellent. I'm assuming you're part of Nokia's American operation because (based on experience) I find it very hard to believe that somebody so helpful could have anything to do with the European arm.
Thanks again for your help. -
Inappropriate?wow 200+ product codes! i take it some of these codes are network variant codes? surely there cannot be 200 generic codes can there? any idea when O2 UK will be getting v30 (product code 0548021)?
Dustin, are you here officially for nokia or are you just an employee doing more than your duty to help?
finally konstructiv, Don't go to the darkside and get an iphone! what are you thinking!! have you seen the new samsung innov8? it runs symbian os and has an 8mp cam. if you cannot wait for the n85 or the n96 and you've really had enough of nokias, i'd seriously go for the innov8 -
Inappropriate?Dear Dustin,
I too would like to enquire about product code 0548021 and when it might be included in the v30 firmware update.
If it is up to you, would you be so kind as to include this code in the update or let us know more or less when it is expected to be added?
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Dino -
Inappropriate?Ok, I'll try to answer all the questions at once.
Konstructiv, I'm sorry to see you go, but I understand your feelings. I have sent your response to the teams responsible for software launches so that they can understand how the current process can lose Nokia devoted customers. I am in fact located in North America and I am troubled that you felt you don't get the same level of service from Nokia Care in the UK. I will still post here when the software is available, in case you haven't dumped the device yet.
To Rich, I am here officially although, this is not considered an official channel. (Yet)
For both rich and DonDino, you have a O2 version of the Nokia N95. If I understand the local requirements, O2 has to approve the release before you can get it. Approval from carriers takes time, so it is hard to say when it will be available. If this is not the case (and O2 allows Nokia to release without approval), and O2 would be who you want to ask that question, it will be released in a few weeks with the local package that Konstructiv was waiting for.
Just so everyone understands too, I don't get to make the decision on what gets supported in a release, I just make sure that when it does, you guys can update it on NSU.
Best regards to all,
Dustin -
Inappropriate?Hi Dustin,
thanks for the informative reply.
I will try to ask O2 about it. If and when it gets released for my device, I hope it will solve the VoIP problems so that this very useful feature of the device will finally become usable!
Regards,
Dino -
Inappropriate? What kind of issues are you having with the VoIP?
-
Inappropriate?I also wanted anyone interested in what software is available for them to have this link:
http://europe.nokia.com/A4577224
You can enter your Product Code and it will tell you what NSU currently has available for your device. -
Inappropriate? The phone crashes, i.e. shuts off and restarts, about 90% of the times I try to use VoIP. It is random, it can happen any time from 30 seconds to 10 minutes into a call, unpredictable, and it happens both over 3G and WiFi. Of course such unpredictability makes the VoIP function unusable as I can't place a call not knowing when it's going to randomly cut off :-(
The phone also crashes every single time I film a video, and most of the time I see videos or listen to audio over the internet.
Is there anything else a Nokia shop could do about these issues? I'm not keen on returning it to O2 for repair/replacement, as they have off-putting terms & conditions and might end up actually sending me a different model instead! -
I had same problem it is a hardware fault not firmware. Posted it to Nokia repair center free post details on Nokia web site. Within a week new phone sent back. Nokia obviously does know about this fault. -
BBB,
It's interesting that you say we obviously know about this fault. This is simply not the case. What needs to be remembered is that parts can and do fail. This does not mean that Nokia 'knows' about an issue.
We sold millions of Nokia N95's and I now know of two devices that exhibit this issue, however, both of you could be experiencing very different underlying causes. What tipped me off to the need for repair is the feature sets in use. All are seemingly unrelated, but when you look at what each feature is trying to accomplish you see that they are in fact, very related. Streaming. The cause however is not so clear, you could be dealing with a failing memory chip, or a failing processor, corrupted memory is still a possibility on a level that a user cannot correct. The fact that your phone was repaired in warranty simply means that you did not cause the issue and not that Nokia knows about your issue and is trying to hide it.
Thanks for your input BBB. Don Dino, keep me posted on your repair progress. Do me a favor if it comes back with the same issue. Open a new thread so it's easier for me to track.
Best regards,
Dustin -
Inappropriate? What VoIP client are you using? To me it seems that all of your issues are related and not separate.
I'm seeing a lot of issues corrected by Firmware re-install so I would first suggest that you run a back-up and re-install the Firmware using NSU. It should allow you to reload 21.x. Then restore your back-up. Essentially what we expect this to do is correct any data corruption.
One thing you may want to try, and I understand if you don't want to, is to reload 21.x and then restore only your personal data, contacts, calendar, etc... Then reload each application you use, 1 at a time, using the device after each, testing the apps you have installed. See if one app is causing the grief. -
Inappropriate?thanks dustin, much appreciated
To DonDino, i'm using sipgate VoIP with my o2 branded n95 and it works flawlessly, even on the older firmware versions. (i'm currently on v21). i'd do what dustin sugests and reinstall the firmware -
Inappropriate?Hi Dustin and Rich_Enduro,
I have just reinstalled v21 (literally 5 mins ago), and with no settings whatsoever changed or any apps added I went on the browser straight to YouTube. I played the very first video I saw in front of me, and... it crashed. It did that by freezing the video at first, but not the controls, so I could press exit to return to the standby screen but the frozen video image remained superimposed on the standby screen. After a few seconds the controls went frozen too. The battery was charging at that time, so the battery indicator was animating from empty to full... I removed the charger, and the indicator kept animating!! Of course, like usual, I had to remove the battery to shut off and restart the phone.
I should think this doesn't have to do with corrupt data then? -
Inappropriate?Hi again,
I've just finished testing the VoIP function, again without having changed any settings (apart from adding my SIP settings of course) and not added any apps.
I just phoned my SIP service answerphone and let the phone play all the messages. I was using the SIP function over O2 3G connection. The phone crashed at around 2'42" calltime... Like clockwork, one might (unhappily) add... -
Inappropriate?I also forgot to mention the phone displays the same behaviour with video calls, i.e. crashes at random points within each video call. I have two friends whom I can video call. One time I successfully completed a video call with one of them, but never again since then :-o
-
Inappropriate?dondino, i didn't think O2 allowed its internet to be used for VoIP. check the small print in the free data package delails. your best off sticking to wifi for voip, as for the other problems, i'd take it to a service point
-
Inappropriate?Rich_Enduro, no, they say they don't like it in their policy, but it's not blocked on their network and their policy is there for people who abuse it and use enormous amounts of data, not for casual use (even with VoIP you'd have to talk hours and hours a day to be considered abusive). Besides, audio streaming problems are also supposed to be prohibited in O2's T&Cs, but many people incl. myself are in correspondence with O2 support about streaming Internet Radio over 3G, with their assurances that they are working to improve audio streaming.
Back to the issue at hand, I guess I'll take it to a service point and see what they say. Hopefully Nokia themselves will be able to help without O2 intervention - I don't want them replacing it with just any odd model they choose :-) -
Inappropriate?I'm guessing of course because I don't have the device in hand, but what you are describing sounds like you may need repair.
Would you agree that everything you are having issues with relates to the downlink from the carrier? Meaning you have an open data channel.
Is it always in 3G or is it in 2G as well? -
Inappropriate?I would say all the problems are related to using a 3G data connection... except for filming, which doesn't use any data. The phone crashes/restarts when I film, after about 1 minute of filming, again very consistent in this timing! It does that regardless of whether it's in 2G or 3G.
Also VoIP crashes the same regardless if it's being used over 3G or over WiFi. Again, I've used VoIP over WiFi with the phone set on 3G and on 2G, the crashing/restarting is consistently random (what a choice of words).
Finally, I now mostly keep the phone on 2G, so can't use VoIP or YouTube over EDGE, so it hasn't crashed for a while. If I date enable VoIP over my home WiFi connection, it will crash again just like I described. -
Inappropriate?Well I took it over to the shop where I bought it, where they will send it for repair.
As I was walking out the store, I noticed that the guy wrote on the receipt that the fault was a 'Software problem'... I hope they are not going to just re-flash the firmware and pretend that they fixed it!!! We'll just have to wait and see... -
Inappropriate?well i hope they get it sorted for you dondino,
while we're talking about the n95, a friend of mine just got one on the 3 network in the UK. the firmware is v20 and the updater says nothing newer is available!! what's all that about? v21 has been out months. doesn't 3 UK have any intentions of approving any more firmware updates for the n95?? -
Inappropriate?Hello,
Can you please tell us when should we expect updates for North American Edition (RM-421)? Because as far as I can see on the web is that all other models got v.30, Thank you very much.
I’m Quires
-
Inappropriate?Vito,
A time frame for North America has not been released yet. I am waiting for the same as well. I'll let you know when it is up and running.
Best regards,
Dustin -
Dustin, could you please also check if the v30 firmware will be available for product code 0548364? I know previously the firmware update has followed a week or so late, just seems much longer this time. -
irata,
Nothing yet on yours, but based on the code you gave I would expect that it will be in the same UK release as Konstructiv's. No promises though. I'll keep you posted. -
Inappropriate?Dear Dustin,
I just got my N95 back from O2 (i.e. back from Nokia techs). It seems to be working ok, I only had the chance to film about 1:20 in duration and it didn't crash. I will test more thoroughly and if it plays up again, I'll open a new thread.
Funnily enough, O2 are having a data outage at the moment, so I cannot test most of the features that usually make it crash!!
Thinking about it, I'll just open a new thread anyway to discuss possible causes for these crashes.
Regards,
Dino -
Inappropriate?I've opened a new thread here:
http://getsatisfaction.com/nokia/topi...
to discuss the causes of the crashing problem mentioned above.
As for someone mentioning that Nokia knows about this problem, how is it then that they didn't fix my phone (it came back with exactly the same problem)? -
Inappropriate?Any idea when 3 (UK) will be releasing the update for 0546553?
-
Inappropriate?Smuk,
I don't sorry. They would be the only outlet for info like that and I doubt that an agent would immediately know if you called. Try chatting or emailing them. If I see it though I'll let you know.
Best regards,
Dustin -
Inappropriate?@Dustin R
Any further news on the UK release of the v30 firmware for the N95? I have an N95 product code of: 0548364
This is the Carphone Warehouse specific product code and the phone is unlocked when received from this retailer
Normally it's only a week or two before it's released for this product code, so any news what the delay is?
I’m undecided
-
Nothing yet on that version. I'll add you to the list of remember to notify.
Best regards,
Dustin -
hi dustin it will from liverpool when do you think the new firmwere 30 update will hit the uk on o2 -
Will,
Look up farther in this post. O2 hasn't approved the software update yet.
Br,
Dustin
