Can I use other RAID units?
If I do not want to use the Apple Xserve RAID can I attach RAID units from different manufacturers to the Xserve?

Inappropriate?Yes.
If the Apple Quad-Core or Dual-Core Intel Xeon Xserve supports the fibre channel connectivity to the RAID unit you wish to use then you should be able to use it. MatrixStore only requires a volume visible by the Mac OS.
You should be careful not to overload each Xserve with very large RAID volumes (SATABeast Xi array) as regeneration tasks may take some time if you have a 42TB RAID unit! -
Inappropriate? But it has to be attached through fiber channel? And lets say that I can attache any RAID (like firewire for example, or eSata) and later on I manage to buy promise Vtrack, It`s possible to maintain those "vaults" and add the Vtrack (with it`s fibre channel card in Xserve) to the same vault in matrixstore?

The concept of vaults is that they are distributed over all available nodes.
At the moment we do not support the addition of storage to an existing node but that may change! -
Inappropriate? It doesn't need to be connected via fiber channel... the important thing is that the OS (Mac or Linux) can mount the storage as a volume.
The overall solution speed is generally affected by three "bottlenecks":
1. Speed of the connection (gigE generally)
2. Speed of the CPU (it is CPU intensive to extract data from the NIC, decode it, and then buffer it to the disk)
3. Speed of the disk channel for write/read.
If you have a slow disk channel, e.g., 30MB/s is typical on limited or badly configured hardware, then don't expect to get more than 30MB/s write/read. A decently configured Xserve/Xserve RAID with fiber can of course achieve a lot more speed than that, but the MatrixStore software doesn't require that speed.
