Smokescreen
To the editor:
I can’t help but think that Ode’s prominent advertising for “100% organic” cigarettes calls into question your claim to be a magazine for intelligent optimists. It is of, course, quite easy to grow tobacco without using any artificial insecticides because it comes fully saturated with its own – the deadly (but organic!) poison nicotine, which kills* more than four million people every year.

Inappropriate? We appreciate your feedback and I'm sorry you have not received a reply yet from ode@odemagazine.com. I'll check to see if they received any messages from you.
As for our policies: The autonomy of the individual and personal responsibility are core elements of the mission of Ode.
We take full responsibility for our editorial and we fully trust that our readers are capable to decide for themselves which information in our magazine, including advertising, they want to use or not.
Advertising is not part of the editorial. Traditionally and ideally, they must remain separate. -
Inappropriate?I wonder, Katie, will you still feel comfortable using that same boilerplate response if Ode were to start running ads for skin bleaching products, Hummers, and handguns? Or how about the NRA or Stormfront? Don't kid yourself: Ode's advertisements cannot be completely isolated from its editorial message: first, because they are plain proof that you are being financed by these folk (goodbye credibility); and second, because by placing their messages between Ode's covers, you are actively legitimatizing them (goodbye integrity).
You can add me to the list of people who will not renew their subscriptions over this disappointing display.
I’m sad and disappointed
