How to log in to Facebook with OpenID
I see on the Demand OpenID page it states "Hooray! facebook.com is OpenID enabled". But I cannot see anywhere on Facebook where you can login with your OpenID so how is Facebook.com OpenID enabled?

It's a little janky and hidden, but you can link your OpenID to your Facebook account from this page:
https://register.facebook.com/editacc...
Just check out the section called "Linked Accounts". The only real benefit is if you use one of the primary OpenID providers (Vidoop is no longer included, as they've shut down), you'll be able to sign in to Facebook automatically if you're signed in to the other OpenID provider.
I’m confident

Ah okay, I understand, it does seem a bit awkward alright, why couldn't they just add an OpenID login interface to their main login page like everyone else. Facebook has to be special I guess.

Well, I think the problem is that the UI just isn't there yet. Most Facebook users have never heard of OpenID, so just slapping on an OpenID box on the homepage wouldn't fly.
The current solution is a practical one — and if we can make improvements to the OpenID user experience, who knows? we may some day see OpenID on the homepage!

OK, I've linked my MyOpenID account, but now what? "if you use one of the primary OpenID providers ... you'll be able to sign in to Facebook automatically if you're signed in to the other OpenID provider." How's this supposed to work? Maybe I'm missing something, but I see only two ways this would actually work: facebook exploits vulnerabilities in the user's browser to check for cookies from OpenID providers; or when you link an account, facebook adds a (supposedly) permanent cookie containing your OpenID URL. Either way, it's not working for me on Firefox with cookies set to be deleted when Firefox closes. Why not just add a normal login page even if most users don't see it (like a special one at openid.facebook.com or something)? -
There's no way for you to sign in to Facebook with a custom OpenID yet. Facebook's OpenID sign in works by using a feature in OpenID called "checkid_immediate". Essentially this feature tells a relying party whether a user is still signed in to their OpenID provider. Facebook runs this check against a small number of well known OpenID providers (mostly Google), and if you've attached your Google OpenID to your Facebook account, logs you in automatically.
Facebook hasn't built support for any random OpenID yet. This is too bad, but if you'd like to see it changed, I'd suggest providing them with your feedback:

Inappropriate? When you say "if you use one of the primary OpenID providers... you'll be able to sign in to Facebook automatically," do you mean only the primary providers (Verisign PIP, Yahoo, etc.)? Can't be, else I don't quite get the point: as Stephen points out, there is no box to submit an OpenID in order to login.
Is it possible that OpenID delegation does not work? -
Inappropriate?Nevermind. I need checkid_immediate calls to work.
Nice tool: http://openidenabled.com/resources/op... -
Inappropriate?Ok, checking 'recent account activity' in Openid shows 'Approve for https://www.facebook.com/ ' but I am still not being logged into facebook unless I manually enter my login details!
What gives here?
I’m thankful

It only works with Google right now. If you link your Google/Gmail account to your Facebook account, login to Google, and then visit Facebook and wait a moment, you'll be automatically signed in. -
I have both Google and myOpenid accounts linked to my facebook account, none of which enable auto-login into facebook. Any additional ideas how to resolve this issue? -
Which browser and operating system are you using? I presume that Javascript is enabled? -
I am using Firefox 3.6b4 on Windows XP (SP3). Javascript is switched on. -
Hmm. Ok you're right — it looks like Facebook broke checkid_immediate. I'll look into this since it's not working for me either (!). -
Is the issue you mention possibly related to the one described by Passpack, on their blog, and their concerns with the Gmail authentication process?:
http://blog.passpack.com/2009/11/chan... -
Perhaps. I just tried relinking my Google account to my Facebook account and something is definitely broken. I've pinged a few people who will look into it. -
Any further developments on this issue, as I'm still unable to auto-login to Facebook? -
It works sporadically for me. I was unable to remove my Google account after several attempts and then finally, it just worked. I've pinged my contacts at Facebook, but they seem to not have time to look at this currently. -
Inappropriate?I've found it not to work no matter what I am signed into. I have a Gmail, MyOpenID and myVidoop account. I have signed into all of them, all of them are linked to my Facebook account. Yet when I go to Facebook I am not automatically logged in. My cookies settings on Firefox are the default, accept cookies from sites & third part sites, keep until they expire. Although I understand cookies don't play a part in this.
So this Facebook login seems to be a black art for me, working for some, not for others. I really wish they'd just at a login in with OpenID button beside they're regular login form like every other sane OpenID site.
I’m perplexed
-
Inappropriate? It doesn't work for me neither, and I have linked my sunny256.sunbase.org OpenID (which uses myopenid.com) to my Facebook account. I still have to use my regular Facebook username/password, especially on computers I haven't logged in from before. I suggest the Demand OpenID status for Facebook is changed to something like "partially supported" or something similar until we can log in the regular way without using the standard Facebook credentials.
I’m pretty pissed off that the big sites undermines the concept of OpenID
-
Inappropriate?Doesn't work for me also.
Is there any possibility to contact facebook about this issue?
I’m frustrated
-
I already did. I haven't gotten a strong response from them that they have time to look into this right now. I'll see if I can bring it up next week when I pay them a visit.
