Slow page loads - graceful degradation?
The page seems to take a long time to load, and seems pretty computationally expensive to run. My laptop fan is going nuts, and the animations aren't very smooth. I wonder if there are ways to speed up the page - perhaps sequential loading of various parts? Or maybe auto-detection of connection speed and computer capabilities combined with graceful degradation of features? (i.e., if the computer is too slow, no more animation of floating bubbles, if the connection is too slow, load less data, etc.)

I have this problem, too!

Inappropriate?I have this problem too, and it seems like it's mostly due to the Flash happening on that page.
I’m mildly concerned

Inappropriate? The flash shuts down if the mouse doesn't go over it for 10 seconds.
What browser/system are you running Adam?

Don - thanks for the reply - I'm running WinXP Pro on Firefox, on a Dell Latitude D800. It's about 5 years old, so it's a single core, 1.7 GHz processor with 1 GB of RAM. Having the flash shut down after 10 seconds seems like a good computation-saver. I think my computer may have just been overloaded with a couple of other apps at the same time. Just wanted to let you all in on a little peek at how older systems handle the site. Thanks for taking the time! Looking forward to playing around with it more! -
Inappropriate?Actually the main dashboard is quite dynamic with the flash object, a hidden flash object to support live updates, and a great deal of javascript applied as well.
It is fair to say the page is probably more computationally expensive than the average page you might visit on the web. I would say this is in many respects a feature of the dynamic nature of the site. In a future version, I would like for us to have a degrading page for older browsers and continue working to optimize the dashboard page as much as we can.
