Is there going to be a new (Leopard) edition of "Mac OS X for Unix Geeks?"
(cause if not I'll buy the Tiger edition now!)

After some more consideration, we have decided to do a new edition of this book. I'm one of the co-authors, and I'm really excited to be working on it!

Thanks, Rich! Your opinions definitely did make a difference--it's helpful to know that there are eager readers. As far as a release date, we don't have an ETA yet, but I suspect it will be within the next 6 months. We will be doing a shortcut release before then: http://shortcuts.oreilly.com/

Inappropriate? There are no plans for a Leopard edition at this time.
-
Inappropriate? Why not? The changes on the UNIX side of Leopard are more radical in many ways than the ones associated with the advent of Tiger, which did get its own new edition. A new edition is certainly warranted.
I have both the original and Panther editions, and have found them very useful, but I never got the Tiger edition. A friend of mine did, and I noticed there were significant enhancements that were worthwhile, but Leopard was on the horizon and I decided to wait for Leopard's edition of this book to come out.
Is this just not one of the better selling Leopard books? I can't see a good reason for not updating this really useful book.
I’m pissed

Inappropriate?Does seem kind of incredible that it wouldn't be updated for Leopard.
I’m not impressed

Inappropriate? Thanks, Brian! That's really good news. Nice to know our opinions make a difference. (At least we like to think they do.) I'm looking forward to this new edition. Do we have an approximate publication date?

Inappropriate?Great news indeed. I will be purchasing my first Apple product (Macbook Pro) soon, and coming from the Unix/Linux world I would assume that I would really want to have a book like this. Most of the topics that I have read for the Mac are focused on the user interface experience. How much would a book like this cover? Will this cover file system structure, system start up files and other coverage that would be familiar to a Unix System Administrator?

Inappropriate? Here's the TOC from the Tiger edition:

Inappropriate? Thanks, numpty. Gregg: we're going to keep the table of contents essentially the same, and update everything for Leopard.
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Ah yes, exactly what I am looking for!! I now feel a lot more comfortable with my decision to purchase a Macbook Pro.
-
Inappropriate?Brian, that's essentially what each new edition of the book seems to have done, and that has worked well up to Tiger. The book is already well-organized and structured, and updating in place with new information will all by itself make the book extremely useful. The coverage of Spotlight, for example, in the Tiger version slipped in very well and provided nice coverage of the topic. I'm really looking forward to this new edition! I've found previous editions to be great tools for UNIX-minded people who love their Macs but want to take advantage of their UNIXian nature. :-)
I’m gleeful

Inappropriate?Yesss that's good news. I hope it will not take too much time because i desperately need it! Would it make sense to buy the Tiger edition anyway?
-
Inappropriate?lutzhell,
I think you'll get some mileage out of the current edition. While a number of things have changed, there are many things that have changed slightly or not at all. What topics in particular are you interested in learning from the current edition? -
Inappropriate? Please, please, please!!! I want "Mac OS X Leopard for UNIX Geeks"!! I bought the first two, and a Leopard version is definitely in order!
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate? Thanks, zuneless! We just started work on it, and we're going to get it out as quickly as we can!
-
Inappropriate?OK, just purchased a Macbook Pro yesterday. Since this is my first mac I have some playing around that I need to do, but very shortly I will be wanting to look under the hood. I know you probably can't put a specific date on a release, but could it be narrowed to a quarter or maybe a "no later then" timeframe?
-
Inappropriate?GreggJensen,
I'm thinking late Summer or early Fall (August-September, basically). We're going to work on getting some chapters up into Rough Cuts (http://www.oreilly.com/roughcuts) in the next month or so.

Inappropriate?I am very glad that you have decided to update the book to Leopard. It is one of the best books about OS X I know, and I will purchase the Leopard version asap.
I’m looking forward
