Thank you all for your interest! I checked in with the book's editor, and I have an update for you:
- The authors from the previous edition are working on a new edition of the book.
- The new edition will cover only Level 1 tests, in order for us to finish the book sooner. The previous edition covered Level 2 tests, and we'll discuss adding them back in the future.
- We're not sure of the release date, but when we have a large enough chunk of new material we'll start releasing it into our Rough Cuts program.
Thanks again for your interest,

Hi Sharcho,
I checked with the editor of LPI Linux Certification in a Nutshell. While we are considering a third edition, we do not have concrete plans for it yet, so lpi.org is jumping the gun a bit.
Thanks for letting us know that you are interested in a new edition, we are considering it.
Have a great day!

Inappropriate?According to the LPI Exam Preparation Resources, the third edition should be out August 2009. Can you give an update on the book's status?

Inappropriate?Hi,
we're a group of 30+ interested on the Linux Certification book... but upgraded!
Second
Rachel, what's the point of buying an out of date Certification book??
Thanks,

Inappropriate?Hi Marcos,
Thanks for letting us know you've got a group interested in a new edition.
Sorry that my answer wasn't clear. I wasn't suggesting that a new edition wasn't necessary for new exams, but that we were considering the logistics of publishing a new edition.

Inappropriate?I'm interested too.
It'll be great to get an update with approximate publishing date when it's available
.
Thanks :)

P.S. I already have the 2nd edition. Great book.
I’m excited

Inappropriate? As the friend said, I saw in lpi.org that O'Reilly was going to release the 3rd edition next august, and I've read Rachel says theyare considerating it.
No more considerations, please!! I was going to buy the 2nd edition one, but I've been informated that lpi studying contents have varied, so now I dont's want to buy a 3-years-ago book.
Talk to your bosses and tell them many people are waiting for the new realease!!
Thenk you ;D -
Inappropriate?So, please, tell us. When?
From Russia with love.

Inappropriate?We're already in August 2009 !
Is it really possible that the 'LPI In a Nutshell, Third Edition' is coming out this month ?
At the LPI site they are indeed talking about availability in August 2009 !
NEW: Exam Preparation Resources for Revised LPIC Exams!
Please Rachel James is it possible to have a answer ?
Thanks a lot. -

Inappropriate?Definitely add my vote for a third edition of this book as it is the only book that covers LPIC-1 and LPIC-2 (in fact I think it is the only book which covers LPIC-2). Some of the LPIC-1 books have already been updated to the new objectives and O'Reilly will be losing sales because of this.
There plenty of resources available for LPIC-1, but LPI in a Nutshell is pretty much all that is available in print for LPIC-2. The IBM tutorials are way out of date as they predate the previous set of objectives, IBM don't seem to have any plans to update their LPIC-2 stuff at the moment. O'Reilly could probably corner the market for LPIC-2 self study candidates and by covering both levels they could take the lions share of the LPIC-1 market. It might be necessary to think up a new name, however, unless it included chapters for the new LPIC-3 exams (perhaps they are waiting for these exams to settle down a bit before printing a revision). -
Inappropriate?I agree, it would good to see the third edition. It's a worry that it may not materialise - it doesn't say much for the value of LPI certification if O'Reilly is effectively withdrawing its advocacy; it doesn't say much for LPI that it's prepared to list phantom books on its site either..
I used the second edition to pass LPIC-1 and the 201 exam just before the syllabus changed and I've been holding out for the third edition since then because I believe it to be the best material of its type. Furthermore everyone I've spoken to about it says much the same thing, so it's odd that the most respected publisher in this field looks to be giving up on it.
Exactly what are the logistical issues getting in the way? Is it really a concern about low sales? I'd have thought that in this crappy economic climate where plenty of people are looking to retrain (and open source looks particularly good) there wouldn't have been a more lucrative time to release this book..?
I’m nonplussed
-
Inappropriate?Im currently reading the second edition and I've been able to tell for a while that it is very out of date. Its unfortunate that the new edition isn't out yet because I'm scheduled to take the LPI-1 exams in two weeks.
I’m disappointed

Inappropriate?Hi JoE,
During my exam preparation I read the Oreilly book and the Sybex book called:
LPIC-1: Linux Professional Institute Certification Study Guide
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0470...
... and I must admit, the Sybex one is pretty good and the content is updated with the recent LPI-1 exam changes.
Good luck. -

Inappropriate? It seems that this book does not bring any profits to you guys. First you dont wirte a new book covering the new objectives and then after making you mind up about writing a new book, that is going to be only for level one. Come on, I dont think that is the best way of treating your customers, we are not asking it for free, we will pay, and we pay a good money for this. So what's the matter about writing a book covering the 2 leves? or even the 3 levels? I really dont understand. Looks like you are doing a favor, but that is not true.
-
Inappropriate?I hope you guys at O'reilly will reconsider adding level 2 (and even 3).
I'm really looking forward for the new book. -
Inappropriate? With due respect for the writers, after reading this thread I confess I feel a bit disappointed by the lack of study materials updated for the new LPI objectives. I agree that level 1 materials are plenty and therefore releasing a "level 1 only" book sounds contraproductive to me. I would argue that at the moment LPI level 2 and 3 materials updated for the April 2009 objectives are scarce and thus present a niche that allows for lucrative business.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I have to agree with the previous replies. It's very disappointing. I don't think I'll buy level 1 only book.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I am very disappointed also and I hope that you will reconsider adding level 2 and perhaps level 3.

Inappropriate?this is a shame for me too, I'm just taking the Level 1 exams and was hoping on the updated O'Reilly book being released in time for me to study for Level 2. They're great exams, it's just such a shame that there's hardly any up-to-date Level 2 or 3 study material available out there. Come on O'Reilly, support your open-source community!! We're ready to spend the money.
