Message "read" status takes 5+ seconds to clear
Auto-refresh is nice, but...now when you click on a message it takes 5 full seconds for the message list to acknowledge the message as read. It's almost acting like there's a 5 second timer. If it is a timer, I think it's entirely too long.
To verify this...click on an unread message and count to three. click away. it doesn't register it. Click on a different unread message and count to 8. It most certainly will clear it then.
What's the intended behavior here?
Thanks!

The best point from the company

Earlier this week, a change to this behavior has been updated to beta (beta.otherinbox.com). If a message is automatically selected (upon login or choosing a new mailbox), it is automatically marked as read after 3 seconds. If you select a message, it is marked as read immediately. Thanks again for your feedback!

Inappropriate?I saw this in the blog posting about the latest update as an intended change (a 5 second wait before marking a message as read). I agree that this is much to long, and in fact, I liked the immediate behavior that was replaced. I'd like to see a preference to control this (you could use a simple checkbox to turn the delay on/off, but I think that even if you add that, you should reduce the delay time, as 5 seconds is still too long).
I’m unconcerned

Inappropriate?I concur with Damon. Five seconds is a bit long. However, I'd prefer many of the no-timer ideas brought up here: http://getsatisfaction.com/otherinbox...

Inappropriate? As tgaul noted from our blog post over the weekend, the intended functionality is a 5-second timer before a message is marked as read. Based on some early feedback, perhaps this is too long? How would you like to see this work?
-
I think it is too long. Anything more than two seconds is a waste, imho. let's say i have 40 messages. that's a minimum of 3 mins 20 seconds for me to get through them if i want to review each one and have it clear it. And I personally don't like this timing solution as the solution to the "first message gets 'auto read' " problem. I think you should just figure out a way to have the first message not auto-read. But I said as much on that thread over there. thanks hoon! -
Again, I give Kudos to damon, 5 seconds is too long. Who wanted this feature and why did they want this? If they want something unread, add a feature to make something unread once read. -
Inappropriate?I don't like the new 5-second delay. I'd prefer @bravodeltahotel (Ben Hamill)'s idea, referenced in http://getsatisfaction.com/otherinbox...

Inappropriate?I liked the original no-wait on the read status. I was able to skim thru large amounts of junk mail very fast. Even a second wait under some circumstances and mailboxes is cumbersome. A workaround is after reviewing a bunch of email in a mailbox you can shift-down/up-arrow the reviewed items, then wait the five seconds for the selected items to be auto-read.
I like the idea of when you come into oi no mailbox is selected, then you can select a mailbox. Then you can select an item, and then it will immediately set it to read.
But I could understand that some users might not like that, but please set it back to immediate auto-read, it gives a much faster ui for going thru large amounts of mail.
(A workaround for auto-reading first item in first mailbox is to setup mailbox of "aaaaa@<username>.otherinbox.com> by sending email to that mailbox. Then oi will always come up sitting on that "dummy" email.)
If you want to do a bang-up job in resolving this issue you would implement two preferences:
1. Seconds to auto-read with an available option to do it immediately.
2. Auto-selection for mailbox such that you can choose whether to have it read the first item in the first mailbox, or have oi wait for user to select mailbox and item before populating reading pane.</username> -
Inappropriate?the delay is killing me. longest 5 seconds of my life....oh....time X NUMBER OF MESSAGES. which for me is a lot of messages. I don't know how Joshua B is coping with this, given his email volumes!
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Yes someone thought that 5 sec would be a great feature. I think they needed to waste time everyday. They must charge per hour.
I’m Not happy about the 5 sec.

We hear you everyone - we have new logic rolling out. If you can't wait, its running now on the alpha server - now it marks as read immediately if you click on a message - 3 seconds if we auto-select it. -
Inappropriate? No message should be selected by default. Once I select a message it becomes read. But most importantly, there should be "Mark as Unread"
