selecting an address should not automatically mark the first message read
when i browse my addresses in oi, each selection automatically selects the first message in that box and marks it read. i'd rather be able to scan subjects and not have things get marked read just because i'm looking at the address. this makes the workflow of read means i don't need to review it unreliable. it also makes me not want to click on addresses if i'm not ready to read at least one message.

Earlier this week, a change to this behavior has been updated to beta (beta.otherinbox.com). If a message is automatically selected (upon login or choosing a new mailbox), it is automatically marked as read after 3 seconds. If you select a message, it is marked as read immediately. Thanks again for your feedback!

I concur with Bunny Man. I'd rather, on load, no folder be selected (and the subject list and reading pane be empty), then, on selecting a folder, no email be selected (and the reading pane be empty).
This way, I can look at a folder and skim to see if I need to read anything without having to worry if I'm taking too long to decide before something gets marked read.
I’m excited because I just saw Josh talk at Austin on Rails.

Inappropriate?I am frustrated by this behavior as well. What we're thinking right now is that it will only mark the message as read if you leave the focus on it for a few seconds. So if you click on it and move on to the next message quickly, it will not be marked as read. If you stay on the that message for a few seconds, it will be marked as read. How does that sound?

Another good idea would to make it so that when you select an inbox no messages are automatically selected in that box and you have to click on the first message to open it. -
I agree with Bunny Man. I prefer to be able to skim, and if the behaviour is implemented as you suggested, I'd have to very quickly click elsewhere in order for my first message not to be marked as read. That might be a little stressful. -
This feature back-fired. Making people wait for it to be read has created many unhappy people. http://getsatisfaction.com/otherinbox... -

Inappropriate?Agree w/ Bunny Man. Sure it's old school, but I put messages in my otherinbox b/c I don't want to get to them right now, or I'm afraid of spam. Once I get here, I don't want to be told by the app when I should read an e-mail.
-
Inappropriate?I agree with all. Suppose you are interrupted while "hovering" and had no intention of reading that email at the time. Same scenerio can happen while accessing OI on a cell phone. All kinds of distractions take place while you use your cell phone.

Inappropriate?I don't like the new 5-second delay. I'd prefer @bravodeltahotel (Ben Hamill)'s idea.
-
Inappropriate?imho, the first message should only be marked as read if I click on it. there shouldn't be any auto-read.
personally, I don't like the timer solution for the first message in the list.
I’m perplexed

Inappropriate?Hey everyone, this is running on alpha.otherinbox.com. We'll publish it to beta in the next week or two. (alpha is where we try out new features and fixes like this). Thanks for all the feedback to help us implement the correct behavior.
We now automatically mark as read messages that you select manually. The timer only fires after three seconds if it's a message we've selected for you.

Inappropriate?I don't think messages should be auto-opened for a few reasons. First off, it slows things down. I use a slow connection and some of the e-mails are very media intensive, auto loading such content can slow down my connection considerably. Second, some e-mails contain content that track if the e-mail has been read. This can be used for a number of things, such as to determine if an address is active (great for spammers). This would obviously be undesirable, especially for some mailboxes.
At the very least (heck, IMHO, preferably) give us a setting to control if it will auto-open or not. That way people who prefer the convenience of having their messages right there, ready to go, can have that, while people who wish for fast loads, and increased control can have it their way too.

When I click away from the message that was auto-selected, read the new message, then click back on that first message it is never set to read (either after 3 seconds or when I click). I have to resort to hitting Mark All As Read. -
Thanks for the heads up, Ben. We attempt to try out all of the possibilities, but unfortunately, we missed that one. -
Inappropriate?Hi Ben, I just deployed a fix for this bug on alpha.otherinbox.com (it'll get pushed to beta soon). Sorry for the inconvenience.

Great news. I'll look for it, then. I still, perhaps obviously, like my above idea better, but this'll help much. Thanks! -
Inappropriate? This logic isn't working the way that I expect. If I click to a folder and then immediately click away (< 1 second), the first message is STILL marked as read. I thought the "solution" was that there would be a timer before it would mark it read? Thanks
I’m unsure

Looks like a bug, actually. I've created a new problem post for this that I will update when we've resolved that problem. http://gsfn.us/t/8mtq
