Shorten "otherinbox.com"
When you add your otherinbox user name and the address ("spam@") the email address ends up being very long. When giving addresses out over the phone this is tedious. It would be nice if there was a abbreviated version of the domain name we could use.
For example, instead of: "spam@john.otherinbox.com"
This would be much better: "spam@john.oi.com"
I realize you guys would have to go through the hassle and register a new domain, but it would make using the service easier. The shorthand version doesn't need to be memorable, since it's something users who want to use it will quickly memorize it. Other users can still use the long version.

We're looking for shorter domains, but as I'm sure you can imagine some of them are very expensive. We have oinbox.com and plan on making that work interchangeably (but it does NOT work yet).
I’m happy

It's here!
Everyone's email addresses are now a lot shorter!
yourname.otherinbox.com
yourname.oinbox.com
yourname.oib.com
No settings to change. Nothing to add. Just start using them!
All three are completely interchangeable as well, so there's no need to change any email addresses you've already given out. And, if you do change it, the new messages will feed into the same mailbox.
In case you were wondering, all of the 1-character subdomains have already been claimed. Better snap up a 2-character subdomain quick! You may want to visit the Domains page in Settings and add a new domain today!
I’m excited

Inappropriate? That's great news...glad you're already thinking of it! Even if you only end up with "oinbox", that's still an improvement.
BTW, I'm impressed with this site. I hadn't heard of GetSatisfaction before but they really seem to be raising the bar for customer support web sites. Between all the social features and the quick response from company staff, you guys are providing a great support experience. Well done!
I’m pleasantly surprised
-
Thanks! We are really enjoying the GetSatisfaction platform as well. We selected them not just because of what they have now, but because of their vision for where this all goes. The integration with our website should get better over time. -
Inappropriate? If short letter-based domain names are hard to come by, how about using numbers? I used to have an email provider with the domain "141.com". It was short and very easy to enter.
If you go this route, it would help touch typists if it could be entered with one hand (like "131" or "797") and avoid the number "6" because it's such a stretch on most keyboards. -
Very interesting! Thanks for the suggestion! -
Inappropriate? The "oibox" made me thing "oinkbox" which then made me think of a pig eating up all your "other" emails ...
Clearly I am doing a stream of consciousness thing here, and you guys are the victims. :)
I’m goofy

Inappropriate?Another idea would be for OtherInbox to register .oi as soon as custom TLDs are available. Then our addresses could be "facebook@john.oi" which would be truly incredible.

Wouldn't this be a lot more expensive than buying oi.com? Buying an entire TLD, I mean. -
It would be more expensive... much more. I checked with ICANN and it costs roughly $20g. But if the current owner of oi.com isn't willing to part with oi.com... -
Actually I looked into trying to get .spam or .mail as a TLD but it really is a massive undertaking, both technical and political. The costs, including lawyers and consultants, ends up being hundreds of thousands of dollars. -
Inappropriate?I think this a fantastic idea but please alter it to a more practical approach that wont cost OI so much money.
-
Inappropriate? We are happy to say that we have successfully purchased oib.com. This will soon make everyone's OtherInbox email addresses much shorter.
Please note, email addresses like amazon@yourname.oib.com do *NOT* work quite yet, but we should be implementing this soon. Thanks for your patience!

Inappropriate?Wow thanks guys !

It's actually a limit of two subdomains. Are you unable to add a 2nd one? -
Inappropriate?I could only add 1 extra (meaning I have the original one from registration plus 1 more)
I have 2 option in the add domain page:
- Purchase a new domain
- Use an existing domain. -
OK, I was just making sure. This is how it is supposed to be. Currently, we have a limit of two total OIB subdomains. You can add as many custom domains as you wish, either by purchasing them through us or using an existing domain you already own. -
Captain, why do you want more subdomains? It would help us to understand more about how you are using it. We all use one domain name for pretty much everything and just give out different addresses. -
Inappropriate?Actually, I took my original name and then created a subdomain to reflect a similar username I use on forums and blogs and the such. Now I notice that I could have something really short like whatever@xyz.oib.com and that would rock since my other logins are long.
-
Inappropriate?Geez, oinbox.com and oib.com and still too long! Can't you make this shorter? I'm having a hard time even typing them in, My fingers hurt.. Maybe you should make a offer for "o.com".
I’m kidding
-
Inappropriate? Now that I think about it a bit more. I seem to want to group my other inbox subdomains by theme. I don't want to mix all of my misc web accounts with my more personal e-mails. I would rather have 2 separate inboxes and that would be accomplished with sub-domains.
-
Inappropriate?Captain,
That's a pretty good idea. We're thinking about implementing custom folders for you to group your mailboxes into. This way, you can group mailboxes for personal messages together, for example.
We have also had an idea submitted to color code messages based on what domain they are sent to.
