Adding an organisation

I have just added an emergency service organisation that my partner and daughter belong to - Middleton Country Fire Service and had a few issues with the entry.

I selected Emergency Services and then Fire and went to the drop down list. There were no Fleurieu Peninsula towns I could see in that list, not even Victor Harbor. I left the location to 'All Australia'

When I typed Middleton on the location it gave me a choice of postcodes. I selected the correct one (5213) and then clicked on the map to put a specific street and it removed the postcode from my location and I had to click through to the right place on the map.

In the phone number field I put 000 - in case of fire

The website is a very long link (from the SACFS promotions site as Middleton don't have their own web page) and that link is extremely messy on the final display - suggestion here is that for long urls that tinyurl converts them (like on twitter)

I had a photo of the fire station on flickr and it would have been nice to have been able to use that using the flickr API to load. Instead I had to download it and then upload it to you. I am not sure if the photo took because I now can't find the entry.

When I clicked on submit (or whatever the words were) it told me that there was a problem with the phone number and the google map had reset back to Middleton WA. I thought the problem was the words I had put there so removed them and left 000, reset the map back to the fire station location and clicked submit again.

Same error and same issue with the map. I removed the 000 from the phone field, reset the map location. Even though my photo has a phone number on the front of the station it isn't a valid one as these days all fire calls go through 000 first. The station is also only manned during an incident or training night as the firefighters are volunteers.

Now I can't find the entry to see about the photo. When I put Middleton into the search box it brings up a business with Middleton in the name (and fair enough) but has the green arrow on the map on Hindmarsh Island (not even my location but the other end) but the business is listed as being at Normanville, which is in the Fleurieu Peninsular district.

Sorry to bother you with all this.

Hi Vicki, were on the case. We really appreciate the detail you have gone to in explaining the problem.

  • Hi Vicki,

You've raised a few different issues, so let me tackle them one by one. I'm looking at the listing here:
    http://www.ourpatch.com.au/australia/...

Can't find my town in the drop-down list

At OurPatch we have divided Australia up into patches. Each patch can cover quite a large area. We do this to group certain areas together. In your case the Fleurieu Peninsula is the patch that represents all the towns in that area. If we listed every town in Australia as an option it would make choosing a town quite a complicated process.

I've changed the patch of the Middleton CFS to be in Fleurieu Peninsula for you.

Selecting a location on the map

On any listing you can drag the marker on the map to its correct location. Doing this can change the postcode as you might drag it from one postcode to another.

I've had a look at the listing and the map currently shows Thomas Street in Middleton, so I think this is correct.

    000 phone number

We check for valid phone numbers but currently 000 is not considered valid. I'll fix this up so that it's possible to enter this number. In the meantime I've set the number to the local one on the CFS website.

    Uploading a photo

I think it would be more difficult trying to integrate a Flickr photo with a listing on OurPatch than just uploading a photo directly. I'm happy to upload the photo for you if you send it to me, but you should be able to edit the listing at the URL above.

    Can't find my listing

When a listing is first added it takes about 30 minutes for it to appear in the search results. Your listing is appearing there now.

    Messy web link

Most businesses like their full URLs to be displayed, so we can't automatically shorten them. It's possible to shorten it yourself by going directly to a website like www.tinyurl.com

I don't think the URL in your listing looks too bad, and it does give people confidence when clicking on a link that it says where it's going.

I hope I've answered your questions. Please get back to me if anything is unclear.

    Cheers,
    David
