A Collection of PalTalk Express Fixes (and suggestions)

Until the beta web-based express.paltalk is improving there will be issues to resolve -- most importantly with sound. I am on an Intel Mac and I have sound in but no sound out. In a big room I participate, there are some Mac Users who have sound out, which inspired me to research the matter further.

Beside sound, there are many issues with PalTalk Express. Here are some in particular order:
* Often, but not always, when right-clicking on a nickname, getting Profile and all other options are grayed out
* Favorites do not get saved although a message says that they were saved
* Changing Themes in File/Setup Preferences do not get saved
* Personal Messages can not be sent (only received)
* Flash's Settings slip into the left mouse click (right-click is default), so that whatever is clicked brings up these Flash settings, rendering it impossible to continue. A new start of Express PalTalk usually gets rid of this malfunction.
* In a chatroom, when dotted, there is no Alert message
* PalTalk Express does not notify when rooms are open again or when pals are online

There is also no tech support for Mac, nor is there an obvious website to report bugs and make suggestions.

http://getsatisfaction.com/paltalk/ is the only outlet to voice suggestions and frustrations, but there is no indication that PalTALk staff monitors this costumber-service website that also handles other companies.

Even following all suggestions, sound out did not work. However, there are some Mac user, who can talk in the rooms.

Basic setup for headphones on a Mac

Update Java at http://developer.apple.com/java/downl...
If you want to check what version you have installed, go Applications/Utilities/Terminal and type: java -version followed by a Return

Update Flash at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/downlo...

Get a clean start and trash all Flash Player preferences under the ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia folder,
because one or more of the many "preferences" from Flash-implemented sites can interfere.

Here is another suggestion to get sound to work:
go: Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup and select Audio Output. Flash program
sometimes changes the setting to 96000.0 Hz.
Reset to 44100.0 (2ch-16Bit)
Quit Audio MIDI Setup

How to install Mac's built-in web camera "iSight" to use with PalTalk. This is the only way right now to receive all the functions of PalTalk.

If all fails, remember that Mac users can install a virtual PC. VirtualPC is needed on PowerPC Macs whereas Parallels or Boot Camp can only run on Intel machines. This way you can utilize all the features of the PC-based original PalTalkScene. However, it would take more suggestions to get this going satisfactorily, because as we have encountered numerous issues even using the latest version of Parallels.

Suggestions (mostly from http://getsatisfaction.com/paltalk/to...
(mostly from D. Richards -- thank you!)
> Adding Lock Mic feature for Mac users

> Set a custom online/away status message, or display other users custom status

> Open and admin a room

> Share your isight/webcam

> Show messages received offline

> Change your display picture

> Manage blocked user list

> AIM/Yahoo/ICQ/MSN connectivity

> Skype-like telephone calling feature

> Display, set, and change custom nicknames for pals.

> Set push-to-talk hotkey

> I can't find "freeze room to copy" where it would be on the normal right click menu

An "Official Rep" said seven weeks ago:
We currently do not support a microphone within paltalkexpress (it's listen-only).

We would like to first work out some security-related considerations, as these differ from paltalkscene. We expect to have this functionality in place in roughly a few weeks.
