I'm not a parent, but I constantly see commercials and advertising for diapers and was just wondering how does one decide what to buy for baby?
I kind of gather that Luvs is a less expensive brand, and there are different diapers for different growth and activity stages. I also love the idea of the Kandoo line, especially remembering my teenage babysitting adventures in which one child would yell out "wipe me!" each time she used the toilet. But, there is just so much available out there - how do you decide and is it overwhelming? I had to buy diapers for my nephew recently - my sister said to get Huggies, but even having the brand narrowed down, it took me forever to figure out which ones and what size.

Inappropriate?First you get aligned with a diaper brand, in our case it was probably word of mouth buttressed by advertising. Once you start using a brand, you end up trying one or two of the varieties. Once you pick one you tend to stick with it. And then using anything but this style just feels wrong.
In our case we started with a brand/style and then just moved up a size whenever our son outgrew the previous ones. It's a natural progression. I do remember that the size was not standard when we were forced to use another brand. It's like they do it on purpose...

Inappropriate? To add to Thor's point... you end up going with whatever brand you feel leaks less because that is probably one of the highest priority requirements for a diaper. As much as a parent might say it's something else (cheap, better for the environment, etc) leakage is seriously the biggest concern. Although, I will say that the one thing that trumps leakage is whether or not the diaper gives your baby a diaper rash. Raw-bummed babies are sad babies which means nobody's happy.
So to summarize:
1. Doesn't cause diaper rash
2. Doesn't leak
If you find a diaper brand & style that accomplishes those two goals, you will pay anything for it.
Thanks for bringing up this topic as I'm going to have to start thinking about this all over again very soon. In almost 10 weeks to be exact.
I’m not sure I'm ready for the diaper stage again. *sigh*

Inappropriate?Oh, some certainly do. And it depends on the kid too. I think certain diapers work better for different kids. Kind of depends on which direction their pee goes. Perhaps this is more of an issue with little boys than it is with little girls.
