Alternative to Dazzle Video Capture Device
We've found an alternative to the Dazzle DVC100 video capture devices.
I've tested it on three separate computers so far without any problems, and no green line at the bottom of the video image!
I did find you need to run the bundles software once, in order to switch the input from composite to S-video, but we needed to to that with the Dazzle device too. To configure, choose the movie wizzard. You also will need to change the format from PAL to NTSC.
It also costs less. Here is a link to the product

I don't know how well the audio capture feature works, as we're using the line-in port on the coursecast recorder PC for that function.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the tip, David. Here's another device that may do what you want:

Canopus has been making these for years. The ADVC 300 may also be interesting.
By the way, if you are looking into VGA capture hardware, we have had terrific results with equipment from DataPath. If you are planning to build a desktop system for use in a podium recorder, this is definitely the way to go. -
Does this ADVC 300 work with "Windows 7?
Does it not also still require a IEEE 1394 firewire PCI Card? -
Inappropriate? We've been using an Epiphan VGA2USBLR successfully to capture visualisers and other devices (e.g. macs or other laptops) but you have to crank the frame rate down quite a bit so it doesn't seize up the machine.
Eric, very interested, that's exactly what we are planning! The canopus box is good too.

Inappropriate?Sascha, what you're describing is exactly why the DataPath boards are superior to the VGA2USB LR. The LR is a USB device that tries to squeeze full frames across the USB2 bus, at a very high cost in CPU time. The DataPath products seem to offload everything from the CPU - we've seen 1-2% CPU usage on a modest desktop while previewing 1280x1024 at 30 fps. Right now, I think the DataPath is the best way to achieve very high quality, high-framerate VGA capture. We've had great results with about 10 fps on both capture and playback.

Inappropriate? Is there a place to buy the Datapath boards here in the US

Inappropriate?Hi Steve,
Our preferred supplier is DY NYE, at http://dynye.com. Please let them know that Panopto sent you. :)

Inappropriate?Eric,
Thank you very much. I talked with them this morning and they are going to be sending me a quote. The VGA capture looks very good to me since I want to capture the native output of my HD Polycom which is already in VGA.

Inappropriate?I just wanted to respond to Ed's question: the AVDC300 should work with Windows 7, and while it requires a FireWire (IEEE1394) port, it need not be PCI - many computers still have integrated ports.
-
Eric, I have a Dell XPS 400 and all it has are two USB ports on the front; where would the integrated ports be and what would they look like, what would they be labeled as. -
Inappropriate?Hi Ed,
It looks like the XPS 400 doesn't have integrated FireWire ports. For this system, you'll need to buy an add-in card. Here's an inexpensive one:

You can probably get them even cheaper with a little digging.
