How about a single login for all users?
How about a single login for all users, rather than the Student/Instructor paradigm? I am sure the server can parse the roles. This is a step toward simplifying where users locate recordings. Now, Creators who only have Viewing access for certain Courses must log out as Instructors and login as students to view those files.

Inappropriate?Pete,
I'm not sure if we would want to get rid of the student/instructor account as that plays a big role in securing your recorded content.
I do see what you're talking about with creator/viewer access. If there was a list of lectures that you had viewing rights to in the "instructors and staff" logon, would that be sufficient? I'll check with our dev team to see what feasible here. -
Inappropriate?Hi Pete,
I agree that navigation between the student and administrative views is pretty awkward.
It is actually the same login between pages, but the only link out of the admin interface logs you out, which is why you're seeing the repeat login in the student view.
If you just cut the URL down to http://[server]/CourseCast, you can navigate to the student view without forcing a logout.
I've tentatively added a "Home" link to the administrative page, which will allow you to switch to the student view more easily. This ought to make it into the next minor release.
Longer term, we expect to consolidate the various views into a single unified, searchable view. This would likely be part of a major release.
Thanks for the feedback,

Inappropriate?Pete, I agree with you that we need to simplify this - significantly. The back end should be able to sort out the appropriate entitlement and that a single user should be able to occupy several groups at once. I'll make sure that we put some thinking on this.

Inappropriate?Pete,
Just to make sure we're all on the same page, do the solutions I mentioned (link out of admin interface and eventual merging of views) sound like they'll resolve this issue?
Thanks,
-Greg -
Inappropriate?Greg:
That workaround may be of some relative value, but for me any resolution looks like the fewest number of mouse clicks to accomplish a task. To require any user to log out of one account and log into another in order to access recordings which they have some level of rights to is frustrating and counterproductive--especially since I already enjoy that service model as an Administrator! The beneficial 'Courses:Subscribed' and 'Courses:All' sorting links suit us just fine from within our account. Why not expand this capability to other account types as well? How would that look?
For Creators, the 'Courses:Subscribed' link should obviously display Courses to which they can record. The 'Courses:All' link should display Courses to which they have lesser (viewing) rights.
Just my opinion. Thanks.

I’m still here.

Inappropriate?Hi Pete,
I'd really love to speak with you in person about this. Can you give me a ring (will send phone # in email) when you get a chance, or let me know when I can call?
Thanks,
Eric -
Inappropriate?To all,
I had a great discussion with Eric offline regarding my request and I need to correct my incorrect terminology above:
When I refer above to "log-in" and "log-out," I am not referring to User Authentication, but merely the current process of accessing recordings as currently sorted into Student and Staff/Faculty.
Regardless, I am convinced that Eric, et al, understands my question.
Thank you for the excellent responses.
-Pete-
I’m celebrating. Pass the egg nog.
